Why not - he's younger than Colon, who they had last year. He's only a few years older than their most talked about prospect - Tebow.

He's 34 and lost rookie eligibility after the 2009 season. How is this even up for debate and what does Colon have to do with it?

I thought it was obvious that my post was in jest. I don't use smilies.

I know it's far too early, but what if Moncada turns out to be a bust? How great would that trade look for the Sox?

Possibly more importantly for the fans here, how would us passing on him? With all of the hand wringing on this site...

Good point. There was a lot of vitriol spewed forth here over not getting him. If he turns into a bust, many folks will have thick egg on their faces (although most will never admit it).

He's the main piece for Sale. It doesn't matter if he's a bust. The Yankees should sign him back then.

It doesn't matter if Moncada is a bust. He is the No.1 prospect. That's huge trade value. If you don't believe in him, you could easily trade the No.1 prospect for a superstar.

So if he turns out to be a bust we should have signed him for the same money the Sox paid? Come on man.

Why not if those money get you Sale? It doesn't matter if he's a bust. He's the No.1 prospect and you could use him as a centerpiece for the second best pitcher in the league along with his great contract. Even you take those signing bonus into account, it's still a steal.

Prospects are the main source for teams to trade for stars. If you see something you don't like about a top prospect and that's against general opinion, you could always trade him for something valuable.

Yes but most of these prospects were not paid like Moncada. This price to acquire him, plus the hit on the luxury tax and then adding 3 more prospects to get Sale is astronomical.

Are you kidding? It's Chris Sale, dude. And the other "3" prospects, it's Kopech and a couple of decent, yet nothing special prospects. So far, this trade is looking like an absolutely steal for the Sox, the Red ones of course.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

A key motivation for bidding on Moncada was the upcoming CBA. Either an international draft or a hard restrictive rule was going to be implemented that prevented clubs from gaming the J2 system.

No more future spending spree, especially after 2014-15 for the Yankees. It was a strategic mistake not going all in at that point.

And the other cogent argument mentioned above, if the prospect appears to have flaws, then you can always flip the asset for something you need.

    Red Sox played it smart.

Actually, it appears he failed his physical with SFG, too.

#Orioles did not sign Conlon due to issues with physical. #SFGiants had deal with him, but raised different physical concern, per source.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

Came up to Hartford to check out Yard Goats new stadium, pretty nice.

They played Harrisburg, so got to see Robles. Didn't do much at the plate, but showed off his arm from LF once to keep a guy from trying to score.

Castellani started for Hartford, he is one of Colorados better SP prospects was pretty good. Gave up 2 jacks to the Harrisburg catcher though.

Brendan Rodgers was placed on the DL a couple days ago so didn't get to see him.
