Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread

Oakland is the 35th team to have three pitchers with no starts and at least 6 wins. They are Yusmeiro Petit, Blake Treinen, and Lou Trivino. Jeurys Familia has 4 wins for Oakland and 4 wins for the Mets. If he gets 2 more wins, Oakland will be the first team to have four pitchers with no starts and at least 6 wins. The Yankees have had three pitchers with no starts and at least 6 wins once, which was Steve Karsay, Ramiro Mendoza, and Mike Stanton in 2002.

Detroit's tv broadcast team has anger issues.

Multiple sources told The Athletic that neither [Mario] Impemba nor [Rod] Allen were part of Wednesdays broadcast due to a physical altercation between the two television personalities following Tuesdays game in Chicago against the White Sox. It is not immediately clear what prompted the attack.

According to the accounts of those sources, there has been simmering tension between both Impemba and Allen and the clash of personalities ultimately boiled over on Tuesday night.
In my mind's eye I'm imagining this happening with the Yankees' radio team. It amuses me.

Hell be 23 in ST 2020. Still could be a big win for the White Sox for Chris Sale.

Jose Ramirez has 37 home runs, 34 doubles, 32 stolen bases, 94 walks, and 98 RBI. Nobody has ever had 40+ home runs, 35+ doubles, 35+ stolen bases, 100+ walks, and 110+ RBI.

Tampa Bay has a 12 game home winning streak. Since the playoffs expanded to 8 teams, the longest home winning streak by a team that missed the playoffs is 14 by Florida in 1995 and Cleveland in 2011.

Shoulder Surgery for Sean Manea - often the kiss of death for pitchers. Has shoulder surgery recovery improved in recent years? I haven't kept up but I seem to recall shoulder surgery was often worse prognosis than elbow surgery.

Hisashi Iwakuma is going back to Japan. He went on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation on May 7, 2017. He tried to come back with rehab games on June 14 and 19, 2017. Then he went over a year without pitching before pitching in the Short Season A Northwest League on August 26 and 31.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread

Thanks in part to Kershaw not winning while he was injured, the Dodgers have a five-way tie for the team lead with 8 wins. They have 80 wins. The most wins by a team without having a pitcher win double-digits is 83 by Colorado in 1997. Colorado was above .500 with a 5.25 ERA, and the best ERA of their 23 pitchers was 3.99 including pitchers no matter how few innings they had. Therefore if the Dodgers win at least 4 more games without having a double-digit winner, they will break the record for most wins without a pitcher with double-digit wins. I used wins rather than winning percentage, so this is easier to do with 162 games than with 154. In the 1800s, there were small amounts of games played and teams with records of 8-4 (good winning percentage without the team winning double-digits), 0-11, and 2-42.

The Dodgers won 17-4 at St. Louis. St. Louis's John Gant and Luke Weaver became the 46th teammates since 1908 to allow at least 6 runs and at least 4 walks. Weaver allowed 7 runs, of which 3 were earned. The only St. Louis pitcher who did not allow a run was Shreve. Before today, the last teammates to allow at least 6 runs and at least 4 walks were the Yankees's Ivan Nova and Chris Capuano in a 15-1 loss hosting Houston on August 25, 2015.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's Francisco Arcia became the first player since at least 1908 (probably ever) to start at catcher, move to pitcher, and hit a home run after pitching. The Angels led 1-0 at Oakland before Oakland won 21-3, with the score 21-2 before Arcia's home run.

Kansas City's Jorge Lopez allowed 7 runs on 8 hits in 1 inning, and Detroit's Matthew Boyd allowed 5 runs on 6 hits in 1 1/3 innings. It was the ninth time since 1908 that both starters allowed at least 5 runs and at least 6 hits in 1 1/3 or fewer innings.

The four walk-offs yesterday got progressively less impressive:

St. Louis's Tyler O'Neill: home run
New York Yankees's Aaron Hicks: double
    Cleveland's Michael Brantley: single
Oakland: wild pitch by Minnesota's Trevor Hildenberger

In Game 1 of a doubleheader hosting Baltimore, Boston won 19-3. Baltimore's Ryan Meisinger, John Means, and Cody Carroll became the 53rd group of at least three teammates since 1908 to allow at least 5 earned runs, at least 4 hits, and at least 1 walk.
Baltimore's Ryan Meisinger, John Means, Cody Carroll, and Jace Peterson became the 17th group of at least four teammates since 1908 to allow at least 4 earned runs and at least 4 hits. Boston's became the third team since 1908 to score at least 19 runs and hit at least 5 home runs and at least 9 doubles. Boston's Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Ian Kinsler, J.D. Martinez, Mitch Moreland, and Blake Swihart became the 125th group of at least eight teammates since 1908 to have at least 3 total bases. If the Yankees don't rally tonight--

2019 will be the last opportunity to make a WS appearance in this decade. It's been 100 years since the Yankees failed to make a WS appearance in a decade, the 1910's. And now the 2010's could join that decade, but there's still hope for next year.

Doesn't the decade end in 2020? Like last century ended in 2000? (Meaning the Yankees have only one WS win this century.)

Technically. But people generally call it the 20s, 30s, 40s etc not the 21s, 31s, 41s.

I rather go by decades instead of centuries in my book.
