So I just read Tampa is starting games with relievers to get out the initial top hitters with a better match up followed by the starter in innings 2 or 3.

The pundits stated it would be good for the Yankees in the CC situation where he would face tough righties in the first inning.

    Really outside the box.

Yes they are calling that reliever "the opener" (as opposed to "closer").

It's an interesting idea and I've been giving it some thought. On the face, it seems like a good idea. However, I wonder: is the effectiveness of late-inning flamethrower relievers perhaps at least partially tied to the fact that hitters will be a little more tired in innings 6-9 than in inning 1? Mentally even more so than physically. Reflexes maybe just a bit slower?

I don't know the answer to that but if it's so, that would seem to negate the advantage, since relievers also tend to have a less varied repertoire than starters, so you might think top-of-the-order hitters starting fresh would rather face a one-pitch pony than a guy with 4 Ok-to-excellent pitches.

Since Tampa is the only team doing it so far, the data is teensy-weensy, but it's a very interesting concept I think, I'd like to see it played out a bit more.

    But not by the Yankees.

Kansas City led 9-0, Minnesota got to within 9-8, and Kansas City won 11-8. Minnesota's Brian Dozier and Kansas City's Hunter Dozier homered. According to baseball-reference, there have been 5 MLB players name Dozier. Before Brian and Hunter, the most recent one was D.J. in 1992. The only one of them to play in at least four years is Brian, and Hunter could do that next year.

Seattle won to move 0.5 games ahead of Houston, who hosts Boston tonight. If Houston wins, Seattle will be percentage points ahead. Looking at run differential per game, Seattle is on pace for +47 and Houston is on pace for +346. Therefore Houston is on pace to lead their division in run differential by 299 but not have the best record in the division. The last team to have a +299 or better run differential was +300 by Seattle in 2001.

I know that a) it was worth it to get that 2016 ring, and b) they couldn't play all of these guys anyway, but good lord the Cubs would be a juggernaut if they kept their prospects.

Here's how good Boston is. Of the five games today that haven't started, they're are the biggest favorites starting Jalen Beeks in his MLB debut against Matthew Boyd, who has a 3.23 ERA, which ranks him 23rd out of 92 pitchers with enough innings to qualify.

Shohei Ohtani will be placed on the disabled list with a grade 2 sprain of the UCL. He underwent a PRP and Stem Cell injection yesterday with Dr. Steve Yoon in Los Angeles. He will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks and we will update his plan of care at that time.

    Ouch.

Seattle won by one for the 21st time, making them halfway to the record of 42 one run wins by the 1978 Giants, who went 89-73. Seattle's next 13 games are against the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels.
