An arbitrator will have to break a split decision about how to handle Josh Hamilton.

A four-person panel, which was to determine whether the Angels outfielder should enter a rehabilitation program for substance abuse, is deadlocked in its opinion, The Times has learned.

The group is made up of two attorneys and two physicians — one of each appointed by Major League Baseball’s commissioner’s office and the players’ union. The panel first determines whether a player has violated MLB’s drug policy, then decides a course of treatment.

Because there is not an agreement on treatment, an arbitrator is expected to join the committee and break the tie, according to a person familiar with the process, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the situation is not supposed to be discussed publicly.

Averaged 69 games for KC from 2011-13 before missing April, July, August and part of September with arm issues last year.

You should dislike him for all of the lives he ruined and taxpayers he conned with his 38 Studios adventure.

These overworked imported pitchers are starting to look like a curse. Even Ryu had a shoulder issue to end last season.

    Depends on the severity.

The length of the tears might be different. Tanaka was examined by four or so doctors as he met with them during a medical convention they all were attending. I believe Andrews, Altchek, Kremchek and the Yankees doctor examined him. Those guys are the cream of the crop. Darvish is probably headed towards getting a second opinion(s) like Tanaka did last year.

How severe was Tanaka's tear? I've heard before nearly every pitcher has a UCL
tear, but not all of them hurt or are significant enough to do something about.

Can Tanaka go on without surgery for the rest of his career or is surgery just a matter of 'when'?

5%, there probably would have to be a bit of babying. But he should be good for the foreseeable future.

I hated that they passed on Darvish at the time but it's looking like we may have dodged a bullet.

Just about every MLB pitcher has dealt with tears in their elbows, it's all about the severity of the tears.

Wasn't it Tanaka's MRI that was reviewed by multiple doctors, not that he was examined? As I recall, it was an orthopedic conference in Seattle where the images were sent for the Yankee physician to examine and they were passed around.
Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view

Actual Tanaka went up there. Not just his MRIs.
