The Doc Is Out: Mike 'Doc' Emrick retires from hockey broadcasting after 47 years

The Hockey World will miss a legendary voice in Emrick. Doc is one of my favorite hockey announcers especially when it comes to national television coverage.

It's going to be a challenge for NBC to find Emrick's successor. I think NBC should call Gary Thorne and see if he still has his touch in calling hockey games again.

If not, I say Kenny Albert will be the lead play-by-play announcer or Gord Miller. However, I think NBC will hand John Forslund the lead job.

Kind of hard to schedule those events when no one knows when the season is actually going to start.

If the NHL were smart, they'd make the upcoming Winter Classic the official kickoff to the 2021 season.

MLB did that back in 1981. When the season resumed after the players strike the All Star Game was the first game played.

Is the plan to do like baseball and have every team play at home in empty arenas? Are they still planning a 82 game season? Seems like there's still too much up in the air to cement a start date of 1/1 right now.

The only definite thing is NBC has told the league they are not interested in airing games next July since they will be broadcasting the Olympics.

Something tells me if we're not at a point where people can return to the arenas, there won't be any Olympics again.

I'm not sure of their exact plan, but if they don't want to play into when the Olympics are scheduled, they probably can't start the season much later than mid February.

And just to clarify, I think the NHL should make the Winter Classic the first game of the NHL season, whether the season starts on 1/1 or later. Have it be a season opening spectacle like the Daytona 500. I'm not suggesting the NHL become fixated on starting 1/1 at all costs.

By the way, if they do decide to do a shortened season starting in early/mid February, there are some hockey teams that didn't qualify for the playoffs who will have gone almost a full calendar year without playing competitive hockey. That's insane.

Re: 2020-21 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

If I had to take a wild guess, I think the 2020-21 NHL season should start on January 16, 2021 with a 52-game schedule and have the potential Game 7 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals on June 25, but without fans until further notice early.

The 1994-95 and 2012-13 campaigns had a 48-game schedule that ran from around Martin Luther King Jr. weekend to late June.

Meanwhile, the American Hockey League will start their 2020-21 AHL season on December 4, 2020
