The Official 2020 Playoff Push Thread

Even if the Yankees turn it around and come close to where we expected before the season started, I do not want to match up against Tampa in the first round. I’d rather them be the last team we face before the WS. This way the playoff roster should be structured as efficiently as possible. They own the Yankees and we gotta make adjustments.

Tigers fresh off a 19-0 beatdown from the Brew Crew yesterday are down 9-0 v the Cards in the 3rd. Ouch, wonder which position player may be coming in today.

Re: The Official 2020 Playoff Push Thread

If MLB wants to adopt a 16-team postseason bracket, they should do the same thing the NBA does: top two division winners based on winning percentage and other tiebreakers; then best-to-worst record from seeds three to eight.

The 3-3-2 format is not good. Case in point, look at the Houston Astros who just lost another game to the Oakland A's and are sitting at 22-23 overall. To this point, the AL West has only two teams with 20 or more wins while the other two AL divisions in the AL East and AL Central have three to four teams with 20 or more wins.

Detroit Tigers just split their doubleheader today against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals won Game 1, 12-2 while the Tigers won Game 2, 6-3.

    DET is now 20-23.

Houston is currently holding 2nd spot in West but training WC is they lose that spot. They have 2 v LAD this weekend while Seattle who is only 2 games back of the Astros have AZD.

No way Seattle passes them. The remaining schedule after the 2 in LA for the Astros is all Rangers, Mariners, and Dbacks. The Mariners have their last easy series with the Dbacks and they already lost one of those games. After the Dbacks it is Oakland, Giants, Padres, Astros, Oakland.

How funny would it be if A’s throw the last 3 game to try and knock Houston out.

Wow, if the season ended today, all the NL Rivals would play in the first round.

I think it would totally depend on what teams are the wild cards. If the Yankees can pass the Blue Jays I suspect all of the top 3 teams will be fighting to lineup against Toronto. Also, depends on where Cleveland ends up. They are currently the 7th seed. Nobody wants them in a 3 game series with that pitching.

Speaking of the Oakland A's, Matt Chapman and A.J. Puk have season ending surgeries

Major League Baseball's new playoff format appears to be the sport's new normal.

While appearing on a virtual panel organized by Hofstra University's business school on Monday, commissioner Rob Manfred said the league's expanded postseason format featuring 16 teams would likely return in 2021 and beyond, according to Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post.

"I think there's a lot to commend it," Manfred said of the format, "and it is one of those changes I hope will become a permanent part of our landscape."

You get one shot to do this right. You need to blow up the AL & NL and formulate two leagues geographically. One league gets the West, the other gets the East. Group the teams geographically by division.

It’d work, and it’d be awesome, but yeah, it’d piss off a lot of olds.

Worst commissioner ever. Just wait until he extends the extra inning rule past this season too. This guy almost makes me like Selig.

If they keep the playoff format for next year, we won't really get a feel for it until then. This year the top teams bat last for all three first round games at a neutral site with no fans. Next year would be all first round games, at home, in front of fans. Huge difference.

I don't have strong opinions on any of the rule changes, but in my own mind the game needs to move along at a quicker pace with more balls put into play than we're seeing now. The changes made so far don't address that nearly enough.

I know the analytics people will hate it, but they need to mandate 2B and SS stay on their respective side of the bag (and something similar for 3B, too). Nobody becomes a fan of the sport watching Bryce Harper line out to a SS 40 feet into right field. Get rid of it.

I don't know - it reminds me of the trends in basketball and football where teams are rethinking their composition, and how and where players play. Both the NBA and NFL seem to be thriving as they evolve. It seems to me that players will need to adjust to these strategies, and the best will adjust and continue to thrive.

I have a much bigger problem with being sold that the 162 game season is necessary to separate the wheat from the chaff, and then letting more than half of the teams into the playoffs.
