But that is an ideal world, and I doubt we are close to living in that. If we resign DJ and add Bauer, at this point, I'd probably take it and run, even though I would want more.
I agree - they badly need an upgrade at C, but I hope they can find a defensive specialist on the cheap. Even if he’s a poor hitter, it’s still an instant upgrade over what they had in 2020. It will be interesting to see the list of non-tenders this winter.

This isn't really for a Tanaka thread, but are they likely to get more production out of catcher for the price they are would be expected to get for Sanchez? $$/WAR? If he can give you even 2 wins and gets the high end of his arb bump up to $6.5M, that's hard to beat on the open market.

I think I ride Sanchez out as long as he continues to be cheap and focus the dollars elsewhere.

Problem is, he had a negative WAR this year. Even if you assume that he wouldn’t have performed that badly over a full season, it’s unlikely he would have gotten to the 2-win range.

Last year happened and impacts what you should project out of him next year, but that doesn't mean 2 wins are out of reach for him next year.

    He could actually get worse.

If I'm Hal, why would I pump more $ into the starting rotation until there are enough competent innings behind the plate catching them?

He could also have the best season in the history of MLB baseball next year.

Yeah, its tongue in cheek but it is possible, just like getting worse. I don't think either should be expected though.

Re: 2020 Masahiro Tanaka Performance Thread

    So the questions are:

How much is Tanaka worth to the Yankees?
Is he still better than a #3 or #4 starter on a contender?
What will his market be like?
Is he worth more than $15M-$18M AAV?
Is he worth more than a 3yr deal?

I'm really curious what you think.

I have a feeling he's going back home.

I think the most the Yankees will offer is a two year deal possibly with a third year option. I think whether Tanaka goes back to Japan could depend on what he thinks the status of the pandemic will be next year both here and in Japan.

I know it's just rumors right now. but I can certainly see Tanaka's former Japanese team beat the top offer he gets here in the states.

With all that he's learned these last few years by facing ML hitters, he could possibly be more effective during his twilight years pitching back in Japan. The perfectionist that he is, Masahiro would probably welcome a strong offer and a chance to build his legacy.

What's top salary in the Nippon League for a pitcher? I've yet to hear of a NPB team outbid a MLB team for a `1-2 level starter.

The 31-year-old is a free agent this offseason and the Rakuten Golden Eagles may have the best offer for him. According to several reports, the club is offering between $20-25 million per year. The length of the contract is unknown. The contract would also be a major record for a contract in Nippon Professional Baseball.

There is a first time for everything. If Tanaka wants to go back to Japan this could be it.
