    Define language.

I grew up in a city of 5,000 Italian immigrants. They had a language, or perhaps more of a dialect, they brought here from mostly southern Italy. This language was spoken with audible words of 10% and hand gestures of 90%. I know that language pretty well, in fact I doubt anyone in Italy under the age of 40 knows any of it. In one more generation it'll be gone for good.

    Then there's Pig Latin.

    So 3.

    One. English.

I know enough Spanish to monitor the people who interpret our meetings, and know enough to talk to parents in Spanish if I have to, but I'm nowhere near fluent. Yes, I’m a Mexican who doesn’t speak Spanish. I get hell for it from other Mexicans all the time.

Three. English, French and Portuguese. Studied French all through school. Then did half year PG at "Sciences Po" in Paris. Special studies with Parisian girlfriend (no English) "Chantal".

Married a Brazilian in 1980 and lived in Brazil for 12 years. Never studied Portuguese for even one hour. Daniela taught me the basics, and I just absorbed the rest. Special studies with her, too, I guess. Best way to learn a language there is, those special studies.

The rest of my family speak four or five. I can navigate well in Spanish, but not fluent, and, with ample use of hands, get by in Italian.

The answer that I accidentally put in the COVID thread:

Just one, sadly. I know minimal Spanish. I can understand a lot of it, but speaking is another matter.

One. Took the horrible guidance counselor advice in high school to study Latin. May have helped a bit with SAT scores. But studying a dead language when there are other, rich and useful languages to learn unsurprisingly turned out to be pretty dumb.

I took four years of Latin in high school (all-boys Catholic HS). My senior year I dropped Latin and the Latin teacher hunted me down and forced me to take it. There were 6 of us in AP Latin class.

The Latin professor was interesting guy.

I wanted to take both Latin and French in 9th grade, but the guidance counselor wouldn’t let me. I tried takin* it again freshman year in college, but it met at 9 AM. I didn’t make it long. That was the last 9 AM class I ever signed up for.

    3. English, Arabic and Spanish.
Took 7 years of Spanish in school, and have tried to continually use it in day to day. ARABIC was my first language. I didn’t learn to speak English til I started school. Currently dabbling in trying to learn Tagalog and ASL. We will see how that goes.

Do Kilngon, Dwavish and Elvish count? Doesn’t matter I can’t speak any of them anyway. I speak American, at least as well as our President, probably better.
