Klingon and Dwarvish are just made-up languages, they donít count. Elvish was the King, he spoke his own language.

    Re: JDPNYY's 2020 Question of the day #14 - Saturday 4/4/2020

If we're talking "speak," I'm pretty much limited to English, German and Swedish. I could stumble along in Norwegian and maybe Danish as well, possibly French.

If we're talking languages I can read fluently, as in read a whole book without frequent dictionary stops, I think I can list these: English, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, French. (Scandinavian noir in the original is my favorite hobby reading, and I just finished a six-month project to get through Les Misťrables in French. Terrific book by the way.)

If we're talking languages I can read less fluently, starting with maybe an article but not a whole book and descending to I-can-get-the-gist-but-soon-need-outside-help), you can add (in order of decreasing fluency) Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (TheDurk, please don't try to start a conversation with me), Dutch. I never studied either of the last two, but they are similar enough to others I know that I can figure them out to a degree.

And I have a smattering of Russian (actually studied it for two years in college, but it never "took"). With that one, if I have the original and a Google translation, I can usually figure out what went wrong with the Google translation.

Latin is a special case. I had two years of it in high school (the second year by correspondence, as the only Latin teacher in the county retired), but you can't sit down and read Virgil or Horace with that. However, I use it, in its medieval variant, a lot in my current work, and with a little dictionary help I can usually manage to figure out the short passages I'm called upon to interpret.

I don't know if I should mention modern Greek. I never studied that except privately for a few months before my one and only trip to Greece, years ago. But I know the alphabet and a smattering of the most important words. Enough for this all important plea:

Not true. Hebrew is pre-existent. In what language do you think the deity said, "Let there be light?"

The Committee stiffed you on Malt-o-Meal or whatever it was. See why I don't like them?

That said, it could have been worse.
