Right. If you don't think he's any good, you don't keep him just because someone goes down. You don't pay 16m-17m just for depth.

Agreed. Thereís no contradiction between saying "the Yankees need more starting pitching" and "the Yankees should have traded Happ."

Depends what you get and what you do with the money. Iíll take the depth even if itís overpriced rather than dump half or so of the salary and get maybe a middling prospect. And have the money just go towards reducing the luxury tax bill. We donít need another Sonny Gray dump deal. Iíd like to believe the organization if it had traded Happ wouldíve turned around and acquired a difference maker after, but they probably werenít going to do that.

Anyway, Cash better make a big trade at the deadline. Hopefully the Indians stink and make Clevinger available midseason when he returns from injury.

I like him a lot and really wanted good things for him this year. But I feel worse for his sake than I feel for the Yankees' sake. We're going to see some other guys step up, and one way or another we're going to end up with a three-man rotation in October that matches up with anybody's.
Completely agree. It barely bothers me at all. He's been a non-factor for awhile now and in the playoffs (where it's obviously the most important) he's been replacement-level.

In fairness, had anyone on this board been privy to the info re severino, Iím sure most peopleís opinions would have been different

The soreness he was experiencing at the end of last season should have raised a red flag. They dropped the ball big time when they did the wrong MRI and missed the tear. Severino should have done some type of throwing in the offseason to test it out. Everybody did the wrong thing here. Same thing with Paxton. Different injury but same result. Why do these guys wait till Spring Training to confirm injuries they more than likely know already exist. Very disappointed with everyone involved here.

as for teams with the top payrolls over the past few years, you could argue that Cashman has been one of the worst in terms of performance. obviously cheating aside, but the Astros have won a ws, in another, red Sox won a few, Dodgers have been in multiple word series.
Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

If there's no cheating in 2017, the Yankees likely make and possibly win the WS. Then how's this argument work out?

I get this, but it's kind of silly. Theoretically trading Happ would have improved the team elsewhere, perhaps in the rotation, perhaps on the offense. What it almost certainly would have also done is made Cashman get more creative than Chad Bettis as the other non-Cole rotation move for the offseason.

Also, anyone throwing this meme down now waives the right to complain about Happ if his option vests and he's blocking someone else in 2021.

All that said, I wasn't really in the move-Happ-just-to-move him camp. He's a fine BOR guy with a little upside to boot. What the Yankees DO need to do however is find a way to keep that option from vesting. Sev's injury makes that much harder.

On a positive note: this provides an opportunity for at least 2 of King, Garcia and Schmidt to make an impact with the Yankees in the coming months.

Could be a blessing is disguise in allowing them to assess what they have before deciding how to approach their pending free agent starting pitchers next winter.
