Boone Said a Mercy Rule is "Worth Exploring"

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...mlb-mercy-rule is titled "Yanks' Boone: Worth exploring MLB 'mercy rule'." Boone was asked because the Little League World Series has a mercy rule. Baseball is based on 9 innings. A mercy rule would deprive hitters of more chances to score. It would be strange to not know when a game will end on a mercy rule, and it could make fans at the game root against their own team with a big lead so they got their money's worth rather than a mercy rule win.

2019 has had 90 games decided by at least 10 runs, which is the same amount as last year. The record is 117, and this year is on pace for 119. 17 seasons have had at least 83 games decided by at least 10 runs, and all of them are in the 24 years from 1996 through 2019. That does not factor in that different seasons have different amounts of games, and I'm not going to calculate what percent of the games in each season it was. The most home runs per game in a complete season by teams who won by at least 10 runs is 280/90 = 3.11 (3 1/9) last year, and it's 305/90 = 3.39 this year.

Mercy rule? Sure. Just give the fans partial refunds for the innings not played.

Fat chance of that. So, no mercy rule. Period.

The game has been called by the Mercy Rule.

Stay tuned everybody! We’ll be showing Sandlot on the scoreboard starting in the next 15 minutes!

Also, teams catch up from 10-run deficits. Not often, but it happens

Yeah, this right here is why it will never happen. I do think they need to expand the rosters though. In this era of openers and starters only going 5 innings, it makes sense to have an extra pitcher but it shouldn’t come at the expense of playing with a short bench. I can’t imagine why the owners wouldn’t be open to that. No one wants to pay to see Mike Ford or Austin Romine throw BP.

Well, starting next year, the rosters are going to a 26 men roster.

Yeah, fan's "money's worth" is the real objection to a mercy rule.

If that were a real argument, fans should clamor for the bottom of the ninth to be played when the home team is ahead.

No, that would be artificially prolonging the game. Mercy rule artificially shortens it
