I assume photo taken during a rain delay since part of the tarp is behind Houk and company. Photo could only have been taken in 1969 since the opposing manager is wearing a Seattle Pilots cap.

Good guess. If that's the case though, it was after teh delay ended, as there are shadows around Houk and the Umps. Also, the Yankees are home, as Houk is wearing pinstripes.

Field still looks horrible, especially for Yankees Stadium.

Must have been a monsoon that day. I was hoping to pin down a more exact date since the umps are not wearing jackets but the Pilots came to Yankee Stadium in June and early September that season. So could have been warm weather either of those series.

Lots of 33s to choose from but I like the Swisher pick.

Yeah, I was thinking like that ... pic is from the last World Series the Yankees were in.

Boomer Wells would have been a good choice too.

Re: The Official 2019 Magic Number Thread

Ten days after we kicked off the thread, I thought it would be fun to take stock again.

With exactly 40 games to go, the Yankees (81-41) enter a tough stretch against Cleveland, Oakland, and Los Angeles with baseball's best record (2.5 games better than Houston) and a 10-game lead in the division. Prior to LA's game tonight in Miami, the Yankees are tied in the loss column with the Dodgers for best record in MLB.

Over the last 11 days (the original post was made before the 8/4 game but this post comes after the 8/14 game), the Yankees have played 12 games and gone 10-2 over that span. The Rays were more or less keeping pace until their loss today, which leaves them at 8-3 over the same span. That means the Yankees have managed to peel 13 games off their magic number to win the AL East.

Here are the magic numbers for clinching a better record than specific teams, for those who are interested:
    Orioles: 0
    Blue Jays: 9
    Red Sox: 23
    Rays: 31
A's: 30 (currently an imperfect proxy for clinching a playoff spot)
Twins: 34 (currently an imperfect proxy for clinching home field in the ALDS)
Astros: 39 (currently an imperfect proxy for clinching best record in the AL)
Dodgers: 41 (currently an imperfect proxy for clinching best record in MLB)

Basically with the possible exception of the Dodgers, the Yankees have widened their lead over all of these teams, modestly in some cases and significantly in others. If they can tread water over these next ten days and bump these numbers down by another 10, they'll be in excellent shape as the schedule lightens up a bit.

    Go Yankees!

There should be no dispute which player it should be for #30. Players are wearing a black arm band to honor him.

I agree - either would be appropriate, but Mel wore it before Willie, so he gets my vote.

We were up to #30 for about seven minutes tonight, between the Rays' loss to Detroit and the Yankees' win over Cleveland. So we almost went straight from 31 to 29.

But because it's Mel ... let's post the pic anyway:
