    Group Stage

First Round Final Scores: September 3, 2019

    From FIBA.basketball

    Group E
Shanghai Oriental Sports Center was in for a treat as Gregg Popovich and the United States survived a massive scare outlasting Turkey in a one-point thriller in overtime, 93-92 and punch their ticket to the Second Round Group Stage.

Boston Celtics PG Kemba Walker had 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists as Team USA once led by 15 points, 41-26 with five-and-a-half minutes remaining in the second quarter.

But Milwaukee Bucks big man Ersan Ilyasova helped Turkey hang around.

Ilyasova had 23 points and 14 rebounds including a tip-in that gave the Turks a 81-79 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Turkey had to make one more stop, but Cleveland Cavalier Cedi Osman fouled Walker's Celtics teammate Jayson Tatum while shooting a three at the buzzer.

Tatum made the first three throw, but missed the second. Tatum tied the game at 81 by making the third free throw and sending the game into overtime.

Brooklyn Net Joe Harris gave the United States a 84-83 lead, but Osman and the Turks went on a 8-0 run to take a 89-84 lead with 3:20 to go in overtime.

Walker refused to let the Americans die as he scored five points to tie the game at 89-all with 2:03 to go.

Tatum stole Ilyasova's possession and flushed home a dunk that gave the Americans a 91-89 lead with 1:50 to go.

However, Osman gave Turkey a 92-91 lead with his three-point play with 50 seconds to go.

Turkey had a chance to pull off a huge shock as they were up 92-91 with nine seconds left.

But Osman and Dogus Balbay missed four three throws combined and Tatum grabbed another key rebound, his 11th of the game and gave it to Ilyasova's Bucks teammate Khris Middleton who sank a pair of free throws to give Team USA a 93-92 lead with two seconds left.

Ilyasova's game-winning three-point attempt was missed and the United States survived by the skin of their teeth.

Team USA shot 25/32 from the charity stripe while Turkey rue their missed free throws late as they went 14/23 for the game.

Turkey will now face the Czech Republic who sent Japan to the 17th-32nd Classification Round, 89-76.

The winner of that game will join the United States in the Second Round Group Stage while the loser goes to the 17th-32nd Classification Round.

The Greek Freak had only 13 points on 3/7 shooting, but was a perfect 7/7 from the charity stripe.

Greece will take on New Zealand in a win and advance situation after the Kiwis eliminated Montenegro from Second Round Group Stage contention, 93-83.

    2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup

    Knockout Stage

Quarterfinals Final Scores: September 11, 2019

    From FIBA.basketball

The FIBA Basketball World Cup tournament will crown a new champion!

It was a mixed bag for Gregg Popovich and Team USA as Kemba Walker and company will not complete the three-peat as Ruby Gobert and France knocked off the Americans in Dongguan, 89-79 and sending them home without a medal for the first time since 2002.

It was also the first time since Team USA lost a competitive tournament match with NBA players since losing to Greece in the semifinals of the 2006 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Japan and their seventh overall.

Gobert's Utah Jazz teammate Donovan Mitchell had a whale of a game leading all scorers with 29 points and also had six rebounds and four assists as the Americans erased a 45-39 halftime deficit and led 66-63 heading into the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee Bucks G/F Khris Middleton scored a field goal to give the United States a 74-67 lead with 7:39 remaining.

But Gobert and Orlando Magic player Evan Fournier led the way for Les Bleus to victory.

Fournier had 22 points including four three-pointers and Gobert added 21 points and 16 rebounds as France manhandled the Americans on the glass, 44-28 overall including a 13-9 on the offensive boards.

France will take on Argentina in the semifinals as the FIBA Basketball World Cup tournament won't have the Americans nor the Serbs/Yugoslavians in the semifinals.

The only good news for Team USA is that they still automatically qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan as they were one of the two top finishers in the FIBA Americas during the tournament along with Argentina.

Meanwhile in Shanghai, Australia punched their ticket to the semifinals and will take on Spain after ending the Czech Republic's dream of a Final Four finish, 82-70.

San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills led the Boomers with 24 points and six assists.
Chicago Bulls Tomas Satoransky was one rebound shy of a triple-double of 13 points, nine rebounds and 13 assists in a losing effort for the Czechs.

    United States 7989 France
    Australia 8270 Czech Republic
