Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

Canada wins another IIHF World Junior's Ice Hockey Gold Medal.

The Canadians defeat Russia 4-3 to win their 18th IIHF World Junior's Gold Medal.

After a scoreless first period, Nikita Alexandrov helped Russia draw first blood on the power play at 9:37 of the second period to give his team a 1-0 lead.

But Buffalo Sabres prospect Dylan Cozens helped Canada tied the game at 1-1 with a 5-on-3 power play goal almost two minutes later.

Florida Panther prospect Grigori Denisenko helped Russia go up in front 2-1 after two periods with his goal at 14:46.

Russia led 3-1 when Maxim Sorkin tallied at 8:46 of the third period.

However, Canada scored the last three goals of the game to steal the gold medal from Russia.

Washington Capital Connor McMichael made it a one-goal game, 3-2, 34 seconds after Sorkin scored.

Arizona Coyote Barrett Hayton, who had 12 points in the tournament, tied the game at 3 at 11:21 and Los Angeles King Akil Thomas scored the late go-ahead goal at 16:20 to give Canada the win.

Canadian goalie Joel Hofer was another hero with 35 saves.

Future #1 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft Alexis Lafreniere was named tournament MVP.

Man, this place is soooo quiet.

The Leafs lost to their own employee.
They have no cap space, a $40M offense and can't send to find enough emotion to play 2 full games in a row.
So yeah, unless this team can somehow find a way to play hard for two games in a row I fully expect the drought to last another year.

Maybe they're saving the energy for the playoffs, yeah, they're playing rope a dope to lower expectations before they explode in the playoffs. Well, it obviously all makes sense why they've played like ................e. The lack of defensive cohesion is all an elaborate ruse.

BB55's Three Studs and Three Duds: 2020 NHL Trade Deadline

After looking at all the NHL Trade Deadline deals, here are my top three winners and losers from the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline.

    Three Studs
    1. Ottawa Senators
Why? The Canadian capital city stockpiled a lot of draft picks with nine including three in the first round.

    2. Edmonton Oilers
Why? Ken Holland had a solid deadline day in his first year as Edmonton Oilers GM by getting Andreas Athanasiou and Mike Green.

    3. Carolina Hurricanes
Why? Don Waddell boosted the Canes up front by snatching Vincent Trocheck, Sami Vatanen and Brady Skjei.

Top honorable mention: The Vegas Golden Knights acquiring Robin Lehner from the Chicago Blackhawks

    Three Duds
    1. Florida Panthers
Why? Panthers GM Dale Tallon didn't get blueline help in front of Sergei Bobrovsky and with a lot of teams in the East making quality moves, it looks like the Panthers will be on the outside looking in come playoff time and Tallon will be out of a job.

    2. Joe Thornton
Why? With Patrick Marleau pursuing his Stanley Cup title dreams with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Joe Thornton is stuck with the San Jose Sharks.

The Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars were interested in acquiring Jumbo Joe at the right place, but those deals weren't convincing enough to have Thornton waive his no-trade clause.

With Patty bolstering his last shot in the Steel City, Jumbo Joe will end his career in Silicon Valley wasting another chance to win a Stanley Cup.

    3. Chicago Blackhawks
Why? Stan Bowman made some mediocre deals in exchange for Robin Lehner and Erik Gustafsson and didn't trade Brandon Saad.

Seems to me that the Blackhawks want to retain the core that helped them win three Stanley Cups in a nine-year span between 2010, 2013 and 2015, but they should've trade some of them for more returns.

Top dishonorable mention: The Toronto Maple Leafs still made no help to bolster their defensive blueline.
