The first game of the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs is in the books and the sixth-seeded Carolina Hurricanes take Game 1 of their best-of-five Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series against the 11th seeded New York Rangers, 3-2, inside Toronto, ON's Scotiabank Arena.

Jaccob Slavin opened the scoring 61 seconds into the game as Carolina led 1-0.

More bad news for the Blueshirts as Jesper Fast went into the locker room after a huge hit very early in the game and did not return.

Carolina kept peppering more shots at Henrik Lundqvist as Sebastian Aho added a goal to his assist on Slavin's opener with a power-play tally at 6:28 of the second period to give the Canes a 2-0 lead.

Mika Zibanejad got the Rangers on the board at 14:26 to cut the deficit to 2-1 after two periods.

However, Martin Necas fired a shot that deflected off Marc Staal's skate to make it 3-1 little over halfway in the third period.

Marc Staal did grab one back for the Rangers at 18:06, but Rod Brind'Amour's Canes hanged on to take Game 1.

Lundqvist had 34 saves in a losing effort for the Rangers while his opposite number Petr Mrazek had 24.

Game 2 between these two teams will be on Monday, August 3.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

And we have a shocker in Game 1 of the Western Conference Qualifying Round series inside Edmonton, AB, Canada's Rogers Place.

The #12 seed Chicago Blackhawks creamed the #5 seeded Edmonton Oilers, 6-4.

Connor McDavid gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead 2:34 into the game with a power play goal.

But Chicago stormed back with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first period.

Dylan Strome took advantage of a Mike Smith misplay to make it 1-1 at 5:51.

Jonathan Toews gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead a little over two minutes later on the power play before Brandon Saad made it 3-1 Chicago off the face-off win with a deflection at 9:17.

Toews completed the Chicago four-goal barrage with his second of the period at 12:57 after Saad had a takeaway on McDavid.

Leon Draisaitl helped the Oilers drew first blood in the second period with his power play tally at 4:13 to make it a two-goal game.

However, Dominik Kubalik, who had three assists in the first period, tacked on two power play goals to have himself a five-point game as Chicago led 6-2 after two periods.

Smith was pulled in the second period after conceding five goals on 23 shots on goal.

The Oilers gave their fans a tease with James Neal and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lifelines with two goals in a 36-second span to make it 6-4 with 3:17 remaining in regulation.

But Corey Crawford and the Hawks withstood the Oilers' late rally to take Game 1 despite McDavid having four points in a losing effort.

The Hawks outshot the Oilers 42-29 in the contest with both teams scoring three power play goals each.

Game 2 of this Western Conference Qualifying Round series takes place on Monday, August 3 back in Rogers Place.

The Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series between the #7 seed New York Islanders and the #10 seed Florida Panthers goes to the Isles.

The Islanders held off the Panthers 2-1 inside Toronto, ON's Scotiabank Arena.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes with his goal at 12:00.

Anthony Beauvillier doubled the Islanders' lead with his power play tally off the one timer at 3:39 of the second period.

Florida got on the board 23 seconds into the third frame as Jonathan Huberdeau poked the puck past Semyon Varlamov.

However, Varlamov outplayed fellow Russian goalie Sergei Bobrovsky with 27 saves to Bob's 26.

Game 2 of this Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series will take place on Tuesday, August 4 inside Toronto's Scotiabank Place.

For the first time in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, we have sudden death overtime.

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series sees the #5 seed Pittsburgh Penguins and the #12 seed Montreal Canadiens tied 2-2 inside Toronto's Scotiabank Arena.

Les Habs took a 1-0 lead after the first period when Jesperi Kotkaniemi made it 1-0 at 11:27.

Nick Suzuki made it 2-0 at 6:53 of the second period after his wrister beats Matt Murray.

But the Pens made it 2-2 after two.

Sidney Crosby got Pittsburgh on the board at 9:55 and Bryan Rust made it a Desmond on the power play at 12:34.

Shots are 34-23 in favor of the Penguins, but Canadiens goalie Carey Price stood tall in regulation with 32 stops.

Power Plays: PIT 1/6, MTL 0/2. The Canadiens also killed a 5-on-3 power play early in the third.

    Montreal is outhitting Pittsburgh, 46-27.

Who will net the first sudden death overtime winner in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Both Western and Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series saw #12 seeds take Game 1 over a #5 seed.

The Chicago Blackhawks creamed the Edmonton Oilers inside Rogers Place, 6-4.

In Toronto's Scotiabank Arena, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in sudden death overtime, 3-2.

Jeff Petry wired a shot past Matt Murray to win the game for the Canadiens at 13:57 in overtime.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price was another hero with 39 saves.

Game 2 of this series will take place on Monday, August 3.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

It was a double whammy for Paul Maurice and the #9 seed Winnipeg Jets as they were wrecked in Game 1 by the #8 seed Calgary Flames, 4-1 in their Western Conference Qualifying Round series inside Edmonton's Rogers Place.

Halfway through the first period, Mark Scheifele went down with an apparent leg injury along the boards while being chased by Matthew Tkachuk.
    https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...nt-leg-injury/

The Jets drew first blood though as Andrew Copp punished a one-timer past Cam Talbot at 8:51 to give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead after one period.

It was all Flames from there.

Johnny Gaudreau made it 1-1 on the power play at 7:06 of the second period followed by Tobias Reider's shorthanded tally at 12:51.

Calgary's special teams flexed their muscles again as Mikael Backlund struck on the power play to give the Flames a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Andrew Mangiapane sealed the victory with an empty netter at 18:19 of the third period as he lead his team with two points.

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck had 29 saves in a losing effort.

The Flames' special teams were a huge difference as they went 2-for-4 on the power play and killed all seven Winnipeg power play attempts.

Game 2 of this Western Conference Qualifying Round will take place on Monday, August 3.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

Alex Meruelo has a grin on his face.

The current Arizona Coyotes owner saw the #11 seed squad win their first Stanley Cup playoff game since Game 4 of the 2012 Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Kings after holding off the #6 seed Nashville Predators, 4-3 in Game 1 of their Western Conference Qualifying Round series inside Edmonton's Rogers Place.

Predators #1 netminder Pekka Rinne saw his postseason starts streak end at 89 straight games as John Hynes decided to go with Juuse Saros.
    https://www.tennessean.com/story/spo...89/5559492002/

But the Coyotes didn't mind that as Oliver Ekman-Larsson fired a shot that bounced off Matt Duchene's body and past Saros to give Arizona a 1-0 lead at 7:59 of the first period.

Arizona went on to score two more goals to grab a 3-0 lead in the first period.

Christian Dvorak struck at 10:52 and Clayton Keller wired a slapper past Saros in the slot on the power play at 15:42.

Phil Kessel had two assists in the period.

The Preds had something to cheer about with three seconds left in the first frame as Filip Forsberg peppered home on the Nashville 4-on-3 man advantage as Nashville cut the deficit to 3-1 after the first period.

Michael Grabner scored the only goal of the second period as he intercepted a pass and backhands a tally past Saros shorthanded on a breakaway at 16:25 as the Coyotes led 4-1 after two periods.

Nashville tried to climb back with two goals in the third frame.

Ryan Ellis gave Darcy Kuemper no chance with his bomb 30 seconds in to cut the deficit to 4-2 and Forsberg scored his second power play tally of the game at 8:56 to make it a one-goal contest.

However, Kuemper held down the Arizona fort with 40 saves.

Game 2 of this series will take place on Tuesday, August 4.

The first seeding round-robin game of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs took place in the Eastern Conference and it was a Broad Street demolition as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins, 4-1 inside Toronto's Scotiabank Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Flyers scored the first two goals of the game in the second period.

Michael Raffl fired a shot past Jaroslav Halak to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 5:33.

Raffl added an assist to his goal when he had one of the helpers on Nate Thompson's tally at 9:31.

The Bruins got on the board at 18:51 when Chris Wagner lit the lamp before Philly went up on a deuce again through Philippe Myers eight seconds later.

Scott Laughton made it 4-1 Philadelphia at 4:07 of the third period.

Laughton and Jeremy Lauzon each had game misconducts for slashing each other a little over six minutes remaining in the third period.

Flyers goalie Carter Hart had 34 saves in the victory.

The Bruins next seeding round-robin game will be on Wednesday, August 5 against the Tampa Bay Lightning while the Flyers take on the Washington Capitals on Thursday, August 6.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

The first Western Conference seeding round-robin game needed a buzzer beater!

The Colorado Avalanche won their game against the St. Louis Blues at the death inside Edmonton's Rogers Place, 2-1.

David Perron gave the defending Stanley Cup champions a 1-0 lead with his power play tally at 16:46 in the first period.

St. Louis still led 1-0 after two periods after a goalless second frame.

Colorado Avalanche goalie Philipp Grubauer kept the Avs in the game with 31 saves.

Grubauer's heroics in net paid off for the Avs as Mikko Ratanen gobbled up Colton Paryko's fanned shot and created an odd-man rush that saw Ryan Graves, who also whiffed on his initial shot attempt, deposits it into the back of the net past Jordan Binnington to tie the game at 1 at 5:33 of the third period.

The game was destined for a five-minute overtime period, since the seeding round-robin is played under regular season standing rules.

However, Alexander Steen was called for hooking on Andre Burakovsky at 18:43, giving Colorado a power play.

With 1.4 seconds left, Gabriel Landeskog rifled a one-timer off the post, but Kadri picked up the rebound and buried the puck in the back of the net as the time expired.

The referees went to the Situation Room in Toronto to look over the goal.

The situation room determined that Kadri's shot saw the puck completely crossed the goal line with 0.1 seconds left and the Avs were awarded with the goal.

The last time the NHL had a postseason buzzer beater that was 0.5 or less on the clock was back in 2009 when Carolina Hurricane forward Jussi Jokinen beat the New Jersey Devils in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with 0.2 on the clock.

Kadri's finish was crazy and gave the Avs the victory despite Binnington having 36 saves.

I bet ruthianblast is tearing every piece of furniture in his house.

The #9 seed Columbus Blue Jackets take Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series against the #8 seed Toronto Maple Leafs after pitching a 2-0 shutout.

After two scoreless periods, Columbus broke through Cam Atkinson's wrister past Frederik Andersen in stride at 1:05 of the third period.

Atkinson added an assist as Alexander Wennberg sealed the win with an empty netter with 19 seconds left.

Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo had a 28-save shutout to stymie the Maple Leafs attack.

The final Game 1 of the four Western Conference Qualifying Round series saw a shutout.

The #10 seed Minnesota Wild blanked the #7 seed Vancouver Canucks 3-0 inside Edmonton's Rogers Place.

Kevin Fiala helped the Wild draw first blood on the power play 2:50 into the game as that goal was the only goal scored in the first period as Minnesota led 1-0.

The Wild doubled their lead on the power play when Jared Spurgeon made it 2-0 at 10:24 of the second period.

Spurgeon went on to cap a three-point night with his empty netter at 19:13 of the third period.

Wild goalie Alex Stalock had a 28-save whitewash.

Stalock's opposite number Jacob Markstrom also had 28 saves.

The New York Rangers arguably have a bright future ahead of them.

Unfortunately, the Baby Blueshirts are getting overwhelmed by an experienced Carolina Hurricanes squad after Rod Brind'Amour's Canes are one win from advancing to the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals after a 4-1 victory in Game 2 inside Toronto's Scotiabank Arena.

Andrei Svechnikov was the story of Game 2 of this Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series with the first hat trick of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The young Russian right winger helped Carolina draw first blood 4:32 into the game to give the Canes a 1-0 lead.

'The Bread Man' Artemi Panarin got the Rangers on the board on a 5-on-3 power play at 12:05 to make it 1-1 after one.

The other 40 minutes belonged to the Canes.

Svechnikov scored his second of the game at 1:11 of the second period and Jordan Martinook made it 3-1 at 2:22 as the Canes took a 3-1 lead after two.

Svechnikov completed his hat trick at 14:02 of the third period.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist had 30 saves in a losing effort as David Quinn's Rangers are facing elimination in a back-to-back on Tuesday.

The Canes can sweep the Rangers out of the playoffs in Game 3 on Tuesday. If the Rangers win Game 3, Game 4 will be on August 6.

We have one series that will go four games.

The #9 seed Winnipeg Jets even their Western Conference Qualifying Round series with the #8 seed Calgary Flames with a 3-2 win in Game 2 and tie this best-of-five contest at one game a piece.

Paul Maurice laid out the challenge to his Jets who were placing without Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine banged up.
    https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1995540

Jansen Harkins help the Jets surface first as they led 1-0 after the first period with a tally at 7:18 on a breakaway after two nice passes from their own zone by Adam Lowry and Jack Roslovic.

Roslovic had his second assist of the game after Lowry made it 2-0 5:43 into the second period when Lowry took a shot in the chest and batted the puck into the back of the net before it hit the ground.

But the Flames never gave up.

Elias Lindholm took advantage of a giveaway by Nikolaj Ehlers and fired a wrister past Connor Hellebuyck at 11:29.

Six minutes later, Calgary made a Desmond as Sam Bennett whipped a wraparound that bounced off a Jets' skate to level the game at two-all after two periods.

Flames goalie Cam Talbot made one of the saves of the playoffs after denying Kyle Connor on the breakaway two minutes into the third period.

But Talbot didn't stop Ehlers from making amends for his turnover when he struck on the power play at 10:24 to give Winnipeg a 3-2 lead which led to a victory.

Hellebuyck outshined Talbot though with 28 saves.

Both teams will get right back on the ice in Game 3 on Tuesday, August 4.

The first seeding round-robin game was decided by a shootout in the Eastern Conference.

The Tampa Bay Lightning outlasted the Washington Capitals, 3-2 in a shootout to grab the extra point.

Nikita Kucherov scored the only goal of the first period at 12:53 to make it 1-0 Bolts after one after a nifty move past a Capitals defender and fired top shelf past Braden Holtby.

Mitchell Stephens' deflected a Victor Hedman shot to make it 2-0 at 7:48 of the second period.

But the Caps scored the last two goals of the period to make it 2-2 after two.

Richard Panik got Washington on the board with a rebound at 17:24 and Evgeni Kuznetsov made it 2-2 on the power play at 19:32.

With no goals scored in the third period and the five-minute sudden death overtime, the game went into a shootout.

Holtby saved Hedman and T.J. Oshie fired his shot past Andrei Vasilevskiy to give Washington a 1-0 lead after Round 1.

Brayden Point made it 1-1 with his shot past Holtby and Vasilevskiy forced Kuznetsov wide of the net as the shootout stands at 1-1 after Round 2.

Kucherov made it 2-1 Lightning in Round 3 and Vasilevskiy saved Nicklas Backstrom's attempt to give Tampa Bay the extra point.

Up next for TB is the Boston Bruins on August 5 while WSH takes on the Philadelphia Flyers on August 6.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

The Vegas Golden Knights rallied to win their first Western Conference seeding round-robin game with a 5-3 victory over the Dallas Stars.

The Knights scored the only goal of the first period as Chandler Stephenson started the scoring 64 seconds into the game.

It was all Dallas in the second period as the Stars scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen had three assists in all three Dallas tallies.

Joe Pavelski made it 1-1 at 7:50 followed by Jamie Oleksiak's go-ahead goal at 8:32.

Corey Perry completed the Dallas three-goal barrage with a power play goal at 12:42.

But Peter DeBoer's Knights vaporized the Stars in the third period with four unanswered goals.

Mark Stone bullied his way to cut the deficit to 3-2 at 9:46.

The Knights had an odd-man rush off a broken stick turnover and Nate Schmidt made it 3-3 at 11:15.

William Carrier poked home a rebound between the legs at 14:47 to give Vegas a 4-3 lead.

Dallas pulled Ben Bishop to try to force overtime, but William Karlsson sealed the win for the Knights with an empty netter at 19:39.

Bishop had 28 saves in a losing effort for Dallas while his opposite number Robin Lehner had 24.

The Stars take on the Colorado Avalanche in their next round-robin game on August 5 while the Knights take on the St. Louis Blues on August 6.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

Sidney Crosby and the #5 seed Pittsburgh Penguins get back on track in their Eastern Conference Qualifying Round series against the #12 seed Montreal Canadiens after taking Game 2 in a 3-1 victory.

Crosby scored his second goal of the playoffs at 4:25 of the first period to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price kept Les Habs in the game with 35 saves as Pittsburgh still led 1-0 after two periods.

However, the Pens doubled their lead at 14:41 of the third period as a two-on-one was created and Jason Zucker poked the puck in on the doorstep.

Montreal got one back as Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his second of the playoffs at 17:50 to cut the deficit to 2-1.

But it was too late for the Canadiens as Jake Guentzel had the final word of Game 2 with an empty netter with 10 seconds left in regulation.

Penguins goalie Matt Murray had 26 saves in the win.

Game 3 of this series will take place on Wednesday August 5 with the series tied 1-1.
