2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

Okay folks, here's another season of hockey for the National Hockey League and American Hockey League.

And of course, hockey fans will also chime in on the IIHF World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic and the IIHF World Championships in Switzerland.

Re: 2019-20 NHL, AHL and IIHF Hockey Season Thread

Another interesting off-season for the Leafs after the Nylander saga.

    Number 1 priority: Marner
He is a must sign. I'm guessing 9M aav for 7 or 8 years.
Why not? Cap space. With Tavares and Matthews sitting at 20% of the cap it's tight. Marner is the Leafs energizer bunny, always after the puck and creates space out of thin air. Matthews and Tavares (and honestly Nylander) are more important players of the F group, Marner is one of my favorite players right now.

Gardiner is gone. He's likely a $5M D and with cap it's not going to happen.
Zaitsev is getting traded but for what? He's overpriced, big cap hit and apparently unhappy. If he gets traded for basically nothing it's a win in my books as it gets cap space.

    Finally, Kadri.
He's a value F, he's a productive 2nd/3rd liner which has value. Personally, I really dislike Kadri, he's the type of player I simply dislike their style (like Marchand on B's, dirty for stupid reason) and if Dubas can package Zaitsev and Kadri to get something of value AND cap space that's my personal ideal.

The issue with a bunch of early round successful picks? Eventually you have to sign them all. Boo hoo, right

That's a good lock up though. He's probably like Chara a top pair D for the entire contract.

If Erik Karlsson stays healthy throughout the deal.

The problem now for Doug Wilson and the San Jose Sharks' brass, how to deal with their captain Joe Pavelskl and also future forwards Timo Meier and Kevin Labanc.

They have to get rid of a lot of dead weight in Evander Kane and Michael Haley to free up enough money to keep those three in Team Teal.

I don't know enough about the Sharks in terms of what the return would/should be, but at this point I'm not against giving Hank the Ray Bourque treatment. That man deserves his name on the Cup.

So you did not think any NY Islanders deserved to win?. Happily the writers did not agree with you. Congrats to Trotz and Lehner.

Ryan Callahan may be forced to retire with a degenerative back condition. There were a lot of negative feelings towards him among the Rangers' fanbase after his contract situation and ensuing trade, but I've always liked him, and wish him the best.

The Vezina was the only one I can give to an Islander and Robin Lehner.

I'm thinking, Martin Jones, one of Timo Meier or Kevin Labanc, Joakim Ryan and four draft picks for Henrik Lundqvist.

Actually I thought the right guy won the Vezina. But Trotz deserved the Adam's over his opponents. Those teams were predicted to make the playoffs. Islanders were predicted to be a lottery team.

The clearing of cap space has begun in Toronto.
Marleau to the Canes (who will assume full salary) plus next year's first and 7th Rd. Get a 6th Rd pick in return. Marleau had a 6.25M cap hit.

Marleau can still play, and his presence is great. That said he's a vet for an up and coming team, Toronto is a here now team, but so are the Canes. Really this is a cap move which is why the 1st is heading to the Canes.

Kapenen is close to a 4yr deal. Happy to have him back.
