The Mitch Marner drama is over in Toronto.

The Toronto Maple Leafs agree to a six-year contract extension with Marner at $11 million per year

The rules for tie breakers have been slightly adjusted. If 2 teams are tied in points the #1 tiebreaker is now regulation wins. #2 tiebreaker will be Regulation and OT wins. (ROW)

    Finally.

For right now, this is an overpay. Marner is a great player, as I said earlier, he's my favorite Leaf right now. He's at most a $10M player, and probably closer to a $9.5M. That said getting a 6-year deal in place along with AMats & Tavares means that Dubas has the core locked in for multiple cup runs. Throw in Willy and that's pretty awesome. That said, the cap hit is really tough to swallow. In 3 years, when the cap hopefully goes up there will be 2+ years left on these contracts which will make them seem smaller and the same time open cap money for D. I would rather have this than a deal like Timo Meier signed.

Long-term I think this is ok, while it sucks for this and next years cap hits, with Muzzin/Ceci/Barrie are all UFA's at the end of the season, that's terrifying. It's essentially a run this year, then hope Liljeren & Sandin are ready in 2020 to provide cheap fill-ins and sign Barrie or Muzzin back (probably not Ceci, but obvs depends on play).

    2019, 2020 Grade: C
    2021 Grade: C+
    2022+ Grade: probably B/B+

With this contract the Leafs did flex their mightiest advantage, the base salary is only $700K with a $15M bonus this year. I view this as an advantage, the last 3 years Mitch will only be making $7.7M (right, only); but it could provide incentive to extend the contract as he'll only be 29 and under a new salary cap structure. Yes, pay him now, then pay him later, but the Leafs aren't hurting for cash, I'm more concerned about the Cup and the cap.

Dan Girardi hangs it up. Not all his years here were good, but he gave us some pretty good ones.

What has Philly done to deserve being that high? As much as I hate them, I don't know how the Devils will be that low in the standings.

I also think Florida will be quietly good.

The Metro will once again be unpredictable including the New York Rangers. The New Jersey Devils are a year away.

I wonder what will Ben (CanoForPresident) and Mike (dabomb2045) say about my regular season predictions.

Are you sure? Coming off a 5th consecutive Finals appearance hard to believe someone else was predicted to win the Division. Of course I was around back then but really don't remember. The Islanders had also added LaFontaine and Flatley for the full 85 season.

The Islanders win their 10th consecutive game to raise their record to 11-3. Hottest team in the league now has the league's 3rd best record.
