    2019 Cameron Maybin Performance Thread

Cameron Maybin is an outfielder who has played mostly center. I wonder if the Yankees will put him in center, Gardner in left, and Tauchman in right. He was acquired from Cleveland for cash. https://twitter.com/Yankees/status/1121489062551011328 is a welcome tweet by the Yankees. He played for San Francisco in Spring Training and was released. So far he played for Cleveland's AAA team in Columbus. He batted .216 there with no home runs and low RBI and run rates. The good thing is that he had 13 walks and 2 hit by pitches, which are a majority of his times on base. He had 11 hits.
He has speed but had 1 stolen base and 2 caught stealing. In his MLB career, he has 4.5 stolen bases per 100 plate appearances, which is close to Gardner's 4.7.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...aybica01.shtml has his MLB statistics and https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=maybin001cam has his statistics including MLB and minor leagues. From 2014 through 2018, he played 573 MLB games for 7 teams. That includes returns to Detroit and Miami who he left before 2014. The first time he played for the Marlins, they were Florida.

The Yankees had only 2 bench players yesterday. To make room, Loaisiga was sent down to go to the normal amount of 8 relievers, and Severino went on the 60 day IL, which now has five players.

Maybin was the key piece in the Miguel Cabrera trade. In 2007.

Yes, but Maybin was the key. That, plus the Tigers taking Dontrelle Willis off the Marlins' hands.

Maybin was the centerpiece but Miller at the time was a very highly ranked SP prospect. I believe both were ranked in MLBs top 10 prospects at the time of the the trade. Not just the Tigers org, but all of MLB. And yes taking the money from Dontrelle's deal was probably first and foremost in the eyes of Marlins ownership.

Without predicting failure, there's a good chance he won't homer if within a couple of weeks he's a bench player or off the roster with some of Hicks, Stanton, and Frazier possibly back within a couple of weeks.

Great baserunning in the 9th and of course, a key hit. The baserunning part ended up not having much of a tangible effect but it was just good baseball.

So all of a sudden he's turned into Babe Ruth?

It won't help, they'll have to let him go anyway. Roster crunch.

For once in your life, Cashman, think on your feet. Keep this man. We don't need 13 pitchers.

When the Yankees got Maybin I wasn't expecting very much. A veteran placeholder until the roster got healthy again but at least he wasn't Shane Robinson.

It's funny, though, there were some folks on here who thought the Yankees had acquired one of the worst players in baseball. (yeah, I know, the internet - people tend to exaggerate and go over the top)

Anyway, he's been a nice surprise. Nice pick-up by Cashman.

Since the 13th guy on the pitching staff is generally used only in blowouts - Maybe Maybin should be the 13th guy!

Re: 2019 Cameron Maybin Performance Thread

As good as Maybin looks right now, he's playing way over his past stats. His 13-year OPS+ is 92, and this year it's 125. Being in this lineup he probably gets better pitches to hit but more than likely he'll regress to the norm. Still, most of us would rather keep him, at least for now, and do with one less arm in the pen.

I think heís also a better fielder and a better base runner than Gardner.

You'd rather have Luis Cessa than a .764 OPS 4th outfielder? Whatever gets you through the night I guess.

Iíd rather have Maybin, not Cessa, than Gardner. Iíve been advocating a shorter bullpen/longer bench for years. But we both know that theyíre not going to do that (just as we both know theyíre going to keep Gardner over Maybin).

Re: 2019 Cameron Maybin Performance Thread

It's inconceivable that Cashman will simply DFA a .299 hitter who has slammed a HR in 3-consecutive games and whose defense is better than Stanton rather than trade him for a AAA prospect at the very least.

Fan favorite Gardy will not be traded this season and rightfully so.
