Can You just not play baseball for basically 3 years and come right back into it.

Same thing with Elsbury. I don't think anyone will say he's not a very good player when healthy. If he takes the same magic pill, is he still any good?
We saw in Spring Training that he can indeed still play. But at this point he needs to start over in minors. Fans forget that Bird has actually never been optioned to the minors since his MLB debut. So he does have options left but If I am Cashman I insist on a two-way contract that pays him less in AAA.

The best case scenario is that he is outrighted off the 40-man roster and resigns to a minor league deal.

Why? If they still believe he can play his salary is peanuts. Honestly they need to decide is if Bird taking a 40 man spot better than protecting another prospect from Rule 5 draft.

I think the odds of him getting through waivers and being outrighted are minimal. There are plenty of 2nd division teams with no 40 man roster log jam who would be happy to take a chance on Bird's HR potential for his $1.4M - $1.6M salary next year.

Spring Training...are we talking about spring training?

DJ hit .205 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs in spring training...means nothing

Bird needs to "fly the coop"...one more year in the minors to get it figured out...if not, his time has passed.

This article from The Post suggests he is a free agent if non-tendered.

Ok, he won’t even have to worry about getting claimed.

Totally confused - Bird was DFA’d; not sure if he gets to free agency if released or not. Anyway

If I understand things correctly, he will be in the minors for the Yankees this year? If so, i think this is the right choice...don't really want him to slip away to another team for nothing though.

I was never a Bird guy but I wish him the best in resurrecting his baseball career with another organization. It's not like the guy wanted to be hurt and injured.

It is possible he could be in the minors, but things have to break right.

The Yankees have ten days to trade or release him. He also has to clear waivers. Only the can he become a mL piece, but with his release, he essentially becomes a FA, I believe.

I'd be surprised if Bird comes back to the Yankees.

Me too. And while I'd hate to see him recapture his potential someplace else, it's probably best for him.

Best for him to get away from Yankee team doctors and trainers. Perhaps he can recapture his health someplace else.
