What a pleasant surprise he’s been. I don’t see how you take him out of the starting lineup even when Andujar returns. He plays solid defense and has been a real tough out.

I agree, he's been great. Can he play 2B or SS? Asking for DJ Lemahieu.

If he's great at third, he should just play third.

I'm glad the team gets Monday off before playing the D'Backs Tuesday evening. Hopefully, Urshella and DJ LeMahieu recover sufficiently or they might hurry back Andujar.

Let Urshela rest/recover and return on Friday. The Yanks can split two games in Arizona without him. They have the depth to cover two games. I don't want to see Andujar before Friday at the Stadium.

You're missing the point of my question, which was asked after LeMahieu left the game but before Urshela was hit by the pitch. If they want to force Andujar into the lineup (and they don't just DH him), there is no way Andujar can go anywhere but 3B. So the question is whether they have any flexibility to use Urshela in place of an injured LeMahieu.

I think Andujar should be the full time DH or moved to 1B even before his injury. Urshela just further makes this move obvious. It's Andujar's throwing which causes him trouble.

And Urshela doesn't need to move to 2B even if DJL is down. I think Estrada could handle 2B perfectly. People seem to overlook that he is also one of the top Yankees prospects. He's not AAAA player.

What Urshela is doing right now is probably not sustainable and aided by a .396 BABIP but I am genuinely curious to know whether he made any sort of hitting adjustment prior to this season.

Urshela said he made some “adjustments” to his swing during the offseason and smiled when he was asked to specify them.

“I can’t tell. It’s a secret,” he said. “When you get good results, it makes you feel comfortable. You make an adjustment and you see it pay off, yeah, you’re going to feel good about it.”

Said Boone: “I just think he’s using his body, using his strength, using his legs a little bit better overall.”

I know there's been talk about putting Andujar at 1B but I have not been taking that seriously given Voit's production. They are both right-handed so there isn't even a platoon option there, not that either player needs to be in a platoon situation anyway. If they share 1B/DH duties, who's better in the field? Honestly I would go with Voit.

He's improved defensively from last year, even if it's just slightly and then you have the OPS+ of 145....

At least one of LeMahieu or Urshela has to be available for these 2 games. You can't play 2 games in a National League park with 10 position players and one of them is the BUC. Unless you're playing from ahead both games.

Well, you know, the hitters are ahead of the pitchers this time of year. Or the pitchers are ahead of the hitters. Whatever.

I think at least DJ will be available but they’ll try to stay away or just use him as a PH at most. If Urshela isn’t available and is not going to the IL, I wonder if they send Harvey or Tarpley down for Brad Miller. With an off-day Thursday the extra reliever is not needed and they could bring Jake Barrett up after the off-day. Seems like a good idea to bring up Miller regardless even if they can play it’s probably worthwhile to rest them and Andujar and Tulo could be back in a few days.

Yeah I'd definitely look at that. If I'm reading the 40-man properly they've got one bullet left to fire in terms of shifting to the 60-day IL, which is Betances, who won't be back by May 27. That would make room for Miller.

He has played some 2B and SS in the minors. From what I have seen, I am guessing he could provide adequate defense at either one in a pinch. He has also played a handful of games at 1B.

Re: 2019 Gio Urshela Performance Thread

Anything in the underlying stats showing this is remotely sustainable?

I see his BABIP is way too high to sustain, but I also see that his hard hit percentage seems to be significantly higher than in years past. Plate discipline appears decent though doesn’t seem markedly improved from past years.
