Nope. DJ is one of my favorite acquisitions since Paul O'Neil. I love the way this dude plays. I hope he gets an extension and he plays another two years on top of the two we have.

He will never be as much fun to watch as Duque was. But then, very few players are.

The last guy to have it was Lance McCutcheon.

Why does no Yankee ever wear #37?

    I don't know the answer. I'm wondering.

I was there. What I loved was that he didn't even hesitate - with one quick glance, he knew exactly what happened and what to do.

I saw an interview with Teixiera about Torres wearing his number. He said he loves it because with the no name in the back standard (for the fan who knows better) he may walk down the streets in NYC seeing his number 25 and pretend there are a bunch of Tex fans

I wonder if any of the other guys feel that way about the new players and acquisitions.

yeah I was a little bit disappointed by that whole situation. He knows where he stands among fans. Who cares who wears 21 now.

I do remember it was a kinda crappy player who first wore it though. Forget who.

LaTroy Hawkins. Reportedly wore it as a tribute to his hero, Roberto Clemente. Although weirdly the Yankees were the only team he wore that number for, so maybe he didn't love Clemente THAT much ...

O'Neill was a complete DB about it. Since then, I’ve had no respect for the man.

When Hawkins came up to the Twins, 21 was taken. As a rookie, he probably didn't have a choice, anyway. He was given 32, a pretty good number, and kept it. Might well never have thought about it much. When he went to the O's, Luis Matos had 32 for half a season, so Hawkins took 23 until Matos got sent packing, then went back to 32.

When he came to NY, neither 32 nor 23 was available. No reason not to take the number of an old hero at that point. Lots of players (usually right fielders) have taken 21 because of Clemente.

It was first worn by George Burns (not that one) and Gordon Rhodes, who both wore it at one point or another in 1929.

Or, are you referring to the first who wore it AFTER O'Neill? That was LaTroy Hawkins.

Pretty impressive, in a mildly disturbing way, that you've researched the numbers of LaTroy Hawkins' teammates.
