Re: 2019 DJ LeMahieu Performance Thread

Some here think DJ should be the starting GG second baseman in 2020. Some think his ability to play 2B, 3B and 1B is more valuable, given the depth he provides.

    What say ye?

might be worth talking extension with him if they dont resign didi. Makes it easier to trade Andujar or Urshella

What WAR can't get to are several important subtleties:
    • DJL was insane in clutch situations all year.
    • 158 sOPS+ w/ RISP.
    • 207 sOPS+ w/ 2 outs, RISP.
    • 169 sOPS+ in high leverage
    • DJL was elite defensively at 2B, and his WAR totals were supressed by the Yankees moving him out of position. But the 660 innings he manned at 1B and 3B added value by allowing the Yankees to manage their overall assets more flexibly.

Clearly your're correct in real terms, but I think DJL's season is underrated in terms of "value".
Tenth in WAR isn't close to me.

And that is mainly cos the top two or three guys were just hands-down better.

IMO, his fielding at 2B is far more valuable than his versatility. According to BR, his Rdrs (Defensive Runs Saved above Average) at 2B this past season was 5, versus a combined 2 at 1B/3B, despite the fact that he played about 90 more innings at the combined positions.

What his versatility gives you is the ability to not have to carry a utility infielder on the bench, since he can play any IF position (admittedly a very SSS for shortstop, but in a pinch). So, you could theoretically carry a backup 3B & 1B, as opposed to Tyler Wade and somebody else.
Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view
