So basically he renegotiated a 3 year contract that voids after one year which allows them to have a AAV for cap purposes of $8 million while paying him $23 million this year, then they try again at the end of the year. I'm surprised the league allows it as the NHL did away with things like this after teams started doing 15 year deals with 90% of the money paid in the first 5 years just to circumvent the cap.

Will be interesting to see what happens as the Patriots have to decide how much they want to pay him for his age 43 and 44 seasons.
Void contract? It almost sounds like an opt out claus in baseball. Thanks for explaining!

Unfortunately, they are so surprisingly bad they are likely to get a pretty high draft pick

And no one maximizes value from high draft picks like the Cleveland Browns.

Cam Newton placed on IR, ending his season and most likely his tenure with the Panthers. I always thought he was overrated and a cocky jerk, going back to college, but I hope he makes a full recovery and finds another job next year.

I think Myles Garrett will be surrendering some game checks.

Yeah that was pretty bad, although Rudolph did try to rip his helmet off first, kicked him in the groin, and then chased after him. If anything I was more disturbed by the hit on a defenseless Diontae Johnson, followed by him leaving the field with blood coming out of his ears.

Yeah, what Garrett did is inexcusable, but Rudolph certainly did his fair share to escalate it.

That Johnson hit was incredibly disturbing.

I agree, Garrett should have held it together a little better but at the same time emotions get the best of humans. Garret and Pouncey should be done for the year. Ruddy should get at least 2 games, if not 3.

Indefinite suspension for Garrett (but at least the rest of the season), 3 games for Pouncey, 1 for Ogunjobi. Fines to other players may be forthcoming.

Didn't Garrett hit him though after he had already thrown the ball ?

It didn't look especially late watching it in real time. It seemed like a hard football play.

Granted, Garrett didn't need to bring Rudolph to the ground at that point in the game, but Rudolph didn't need to kick Garrett or try ripping his helmet off either.

Stupid from Myles Garrett. He might've cost the Browns a playoff spot with that fight with Mason Ruldolph.

Lamar Jackson is doing to the NFL what I had envisioned for Marcus Mariota. That extra gear, amazing center of gravity to make the defensive backfield look silly, etc.

Oh and please shelve that insipid Seven Nation Army.

Lamar Jackson gave the 49ers fits today. A huge win for the Ravens in their pursuit of the top seed in the AFC Playoffs.

One word describing the NFC East: Trash.

The NFC West runner-up is licking their chops on whoever wins the NFC East in the Wild Card round.

It's unlikely but possible that the Los Angeles Chargers could finish last in their division with a better point differential than both NFC teams that get byes. It's unlikely but possible that Seattle could get the NFC 1 seed with more points allowed than Cincinnati, who has the worst record in the NFL. If Dallas loses to the Los Angeles Rams, Dallas will finish with fewer wins out of their division than Washington, who is 3-10 with the worst point differential in the NFC.

Re: 2019 National Football League Season Thread

Both conferences have four playoff spots clinched. Given the overall and conference records, Los Angeles Rams will make the playoffs if they win both and Minnesota loses both, otherwise Minnesota will be in. With Tennessee's games hosting New Orleans and at Houston, Houston is in good shape to hold on to the division, and Pittsburgh is in good shape to hold on to the 6 seed. Houston won at Tennessee, so they lead Tennessee by 1 game and can't lose the head-to-head tiebreaker. Houston has clinched a better division record, so they win the division unless they lose and Tennessee wins next week and Houston loses hosting Tennessee. If Tennessee beats New Orleans and loses to Houston, Tennessee will have a worse conference record than Pittsburgh if they tie at 9-7. If Tennessee loses to New Orleans, beats Houston, doesn't win the division over Houston, and Pittsburgh also goes 1-1 to finish 9-7, Tennessee and Pittsburgh will be 7-5 in the AFC and need another tiebreaker.

If Detroit beats Denver and loses to Green Bay, and Arizona loses to Seattle and Los Angeles Rams, Detroit and Arizona would be tied at 4-11-1 with a head-to-head tie and a 2-9-1 NFC record. Ties used to be more common, and I wonder how far back you have to go to find two teams who tied and finished with the same record.

The current Patriots filming-other-teams thing definitely doesn't seem like super valuable/impactful cheating, but the denials are silly too.

Really makes sense how their documentary had to be about their advanced scout, meaning they needed to be filming the sideline of a team the week before they played them (apparently without actually informing that team). Can't control those independent contractors
