Re: 2019 NCAA Division I College Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

The Southeastern Conference Championship Game has one participant while another SEC team suffered an incredible blow to their College Football Playoff hopes.

Kirby Smart and the #4 ranked Georgia Bulldogs win the SEC East Division for the third straight year and their 10th overall after holding off their old Deep South rival and Gus Malzahn's 12th ranked Auburn Tigers, 21-14 inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Georgia QB Jake Fromm had 110 passing yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs led 21-0 through three quarters.

However, Auburn just won't go away and their true freshman QB Bo Nix helped pull the Tigers to within seven, 21-14 with 7:03 remaining in regulation.

Nix completed 30 of 50 passes for 245 yards and a three-yard touchdown pass to Eli Stove to get Auburn on the board, 21-7 with 10:04 to go.

Nix was also Auburn's leading rusher with 42 yards and a two-yard plunge to make it a seven-point game.

However, the Georgia defense sacked him twice and caused the only turnover of the game as Georgia holds on and will move on to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.

Meanwhile in Starksville, Nick Saban and the #5 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide suffered some key injuries in their 38-7 blowout victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa completed 14 of 18 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered a nasty hip injury late in the first half.

WR Henry Ruggs III and DL Raekwon Davis also left the game banged up
    https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com...oa/4205966002/

Alabama RB Najee Harris eased the pain a bit with 139 total scrimmage yards and four total offensive touchdowns including a rushing hat trick.

The Tide have FCS school Western Carolina Catamounts next week before traveling to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take Iron Bowl rival Auburn. Alabama needs to beat Auburn and hope that the Louisiana State Tigers loses two of their last three remaining games to win the SEC West and boost their College Football Playoff hopes.

#11 ranked Florida Gators stymied the Missouri Tigers, 23-6.

Florida Gators QB Kyle Trask completed 23 of 35 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns despite being sacked four times.

Florida loses out on the SEC East title to Georgia due to the Bulldogs head-to-head win oer the Gators back on November 2 in Jacksonville.

The Big Ten Conference Championship Game participants will come down to the final two weeks of the regular season.

In the Big Ten East Division race, the #2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and #9 ranked Penn State Nitany Lions have successful tuneups towards their huge clash inside the Horseshoe next week.

The #2 ranked Buckeyes romped the Scarlet Knights, 56-21.

Ohio State QB Justin Fields completed 15 of 19 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns and J.K. Dobbins added 89 rushing yards and two scores on 17 carries.

The Ohio State defense had three takeaways.

Meanwhile in Happy Valley, James Franklin's Nitany Lions held off a gamed Indiana Hoosiers' squad, 34-27.

Penn State QB Sean Clifford had 234 total yards of offense and three total offensive touchdowns including two on the ground.

Journey Brown added 100 rushing yards and a major.

Indiana QB Peyton Ramsey completed 31 of 41 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown and added two rushing majors on the ground in a losing effort.

Ohio State currently leads Penn State in Big Ten play at 7-0 to the Nitany Lions' 6-1. A win over Penn State inside the Horseshoe next week can give Ohio State the Big Ten East.

However, a Nitany Lions' win over the Buckeyes and Penn State is in the driver's seat for the Big Ten East heading into the final week of the regular season.

#15 ranked Michigan Wolverines, Indiana's next week opponent, finally gave Jim Harbaugh his first win against Paul Bunyan Trophy rival Michigan State Spartans inside the Big House after a 44-10 rout.

Michigan QB Shea Patterson led the way completing 23 of 33 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns despite being sacked four times.

Meanwhile in the Big Ten West Division race, Kirk Ferentz's Iowa Hawkeyes caused some havoc.

The #20 ranked Hawkeyes handed P.J. Fleck and the #8 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers their first loss of the season in a 23-19 victory in the Floyd of Rosedale trophy game inside Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa QB Nate Stanley led the way completing 14 of 23 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns while Tyler Goodson led all players with 94 yards on the ground and a score on 13 carries as the Hawkeyes once led 20-3 with 6:20 to go in the first half.

Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan tried to get the Gophers back in the game completed 25 of 36 passes for 368 yards and a touchdown and Rodney Smith added a rushing score to pull his team to within four points, 23-19 with 3:27 to go in regulation, but Brock Walker missed the extra point.

The Iowa defense sacked Morgan six times and knocked Morgan out of the game in the waning moments. Minnesota backup QB Cole Kramer threw the interception that sealed Iowa's victory from Riley Moss.

Iowa's win over Minnesota opened the door for Paul Chryst and the #14 ranked Wisconsin Badgers to gain ground after beating Scott Frost's Nebraska Cornhuskers, 37-21.

Badgers RB Jonathan Taylor led the way with 204 yards and two scores on the ground on 25 carries.

Wisconsin QB Jack Coan had 162 passing yards and a touchdown.

Aron Cruickshank added 133 return yards and a 89-yard kickoff score.

Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez had 309 total yards and two total touchdowns and Dedrick Mills added 188 rushing yards and a score in losing efforts as the Cornhuskers need to win their final two games to become bowl eligible.

Mike Gundy and the #22 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys entered in the Big XII Championship Game race.

The Cowboys defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 31-13.

Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard set the tone with 122 rushing yards and two first quarter touchdowns as Spencer Sanders had to leave the game with an injury after throwing for 168 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile in Ames, Tom Herman and the #19 ranked Texas Longhorns suffered a 23-21 defeat to the Iowa State Cyclones.

Sam Ehlinger thought Texas boosted their Big XII Championship Game chances with 273 passing yards and three touchdowns as the Longhorns led, 21-20 with 5:37 remaining in regulation.

But Iowa State QB Brock Purdy helped the Cyclones hang around completing 30 of 48 passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns and Connor Assalley nailed a 36-yard field goal at the death for the victory.

The West Virginia Mountaineers kept their bowl eligibility hopes alive after knocking off the #24 ranked Kansas State Wildcats, 24-20.

Jarrett Doege completed 20 of 30 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to George Campbell.

K-State QB Skylar Thompson had 299 passing yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions including the game sealer in the end.

Dabo Swinney and the #3 ranked Clemson Tigers complete their ACC play at 8-0 and go to 11-0 overall after mauling the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 52-3.

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence completed 21 of 27 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to Tee Higgins.

Travis Etienne added 121 rushing yards and a major for the ACC Atlantic Division champions.

Meanwhile in Notre Dame Stadium, Ian Book had a huge day in #16 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish's vaporizing over the #23 ranked Navy Midshipmen, 52-20.

Book completed 14 of 20 passes for 284 yards and five touchdowns. Chase Claypool had a natural receiving hat trick to go along with seven catches and 117 yards.

Mike Norvell and the #18 ranked Memphis Tigers moved another step closer towards winning the American Athletic West Division title after stampeding the Houston Cougars, 45-27.

Memphis QB Brady White completed 22 of 33 passes for 341 yards and five touchdowns, two to Damonte Coxie and added a touchdown run.

The #1 ranked team in the nation is one win away from clinching a spot in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game in Atlanta.

Ed Orgeron and the Louisiana State Tigers are one win away from clinching the SEC West crown after beating the Ole Miss Rebels, 58-37.

LSU QB Joe Burrow completed 32 of 42 passes for 489 yards and five touchdowns despite throwing two interceptions and sacked three times.

JaMarr Chase led the charge with eight catches for 227 yards and a receiving hat trick while Justin Jefferson added nine catches for 112 yards and two scores.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire added 172 rushing yards and a major on 23 carries.

The LSU defense had a hard time neutralizing John Rhys Plumlee as the Ole Miss QB stampeded the Tigers defense with 212 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

LSU needs to beat their Golden Boot rival Arkansas Razorbacks next week to win the SEC West.

Luke Fickell and the #17 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats are one win away from reaching the American Athletic Championship Game.

The Bearcats edged out the South Florida Bulls at the death, 20-17 to go to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in AAC play.

Cincinnati can win the AAC East Division title if they beat the Temple Owls next week in front of their home fans inside Nippert Stadium.

USF Bulls QB Jordan McCloud gave the Bearcats fits though as he completed 18 of 27 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown and the USF Bulls defense had four sacks on Desmond Riddler as Charlie Strong's men had a 17-7 lead halfway through the third quarter.

But Sam Crosa made it a one possession game heading into the fourth quarter with a 41-yard field goal as the Bearcats trailed 17-10.

Cincy outscored South Florida 10-0 in the fourth to win the game.

Michael Warren II, who had 134 rushing yards in the game on 26 carries, punched in a two-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17 early in the fourth.

Crosa came into the waning seconds of regulation and slotted home a 37-yard field goal to win the game for the Bearcats.

#25 ranked Appalachian State Mountaineers go to 5-1 in Sun Belt play and 9-1 overall after beating the Georgia State Panthers, 56-27.

The Mountaineers had to rally though from a 21-7 deficit in a wild first quarter.

Dan Ellington found Devin Gentry for a four-yard touchdown as Georgia State led 7-0 almost half-way through the first quarter.

Zac Thomas helped Appalachian State tie the game at seven with a 12-yard touchdown strike to Corey Sutton a little over three minutes later.

But Georgia State went on a 14-0 run.

Destin Coates gored the Mountaineers defense with a 67-yard touchdown scamper and Chris Bacon had a 30-yard pick-six off Thomas as the Panthers led 21-7 with 1:38 to go.

But Thomas bounced back with a 20-yard strike to Sutton to make it a 21-14 Panthers lead after the first quarter.

It was all Appalachian State from there as they scored 42 unanswered points.

Thomas had a three-yard touchdown run followed by a 30-yard pick-six from Shaun Jolly off Ellington and Thomas threw his third touchdown pass of the game to Darrynton Evans on a one-yard dink to cap off a 21-0 second quarter by the Mountaineers as they led 35-21 at halftime.

Evans, who also had 131 rushing yards on 18 carries, scored a 29-yard touchdown run for the only points of the third quarter as Appalachian State led 42-21 after three quarters.

Thomas threw his fourth and final touchdown pass of the game to Sutton from 24 yards out to give the Mountaineers a 49-21 lead and Raykwon Anderson put the cherry on top with a five-yard touchdown run.

Thomas completed 19 of 31 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns including Sutton's receiving hat trick.

Appalachian State needs to win their final two games or hope the Georgia Southern Eagles lose one of two of their remaining games to win the Sun Belt East. Georgia Southern has the head-to-head edge over Appalachian State.

#21 ranked Boise State Broncos are one win away from winning the Mountain West Mountain Division after destroying the New Mexico Lobos 42-9 on Senior night inside the Smurf Turf.

Boise State QB Jaylon Henderson completed 15 of 28 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns.

The Broncos defense had four sacks on Tevaka Salanoa-Tuioti and two fumble recoveries which one of them returned for a score.

Boise State needs to beat the Utah State Aggies next week to win the Mountain West Mountain Division.

#10 ranked Oklahoma Sooners have one foot in the Big XII Championship Game.

Lincoln Riley and the Sooners handed Matt Rhule and the #13 ranked Baylor Bears their first loss of the season after a 34-31 thriller in Waco.

Baylor QB Charlie Brewer gave the Sooners' defense fits in the first half with two touchdown passes to Denzel Mims and two touchdown runs as the Bears led 31-10 at halftime.

Brewer completed 18 of 29 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns and added 65 rushing and two majors.

However, Jalen Hurts got his game going in the second half as OU picked Baylor apart.

Hurts, who threw a five-yard score to Austin Stogner in the first half, found Stogner again with a three-yard dink for the only points of the third quarter as Baylor led 31-17 after three.

Hurts unleashed his arm again in the fourth with a 19-yard connection to Theo Wease and a two-yard strike Brayden Willis to tie the game at 31 with 5:25 left in regulation.

Gabe Brkic slotted home a 31-yard field goal with 1:45 remaining to give Oklahoma a 34-31 lead.

Baylor had a chance to at least force overtime, but Brewer threw his only interception of the game to Nik Bonitto to seal the win for OU.

Hurts completed 30 of 42 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns and also used his legs with 114.

Oklahoma can seal a spot in the Big XII Championship Game with a win over the TCU Horned Frogs in Norman next week.

Even though their hopes for a College Football Playoff spot have been squelched, Baylor can also book a spot in the Big XII Championship Game if they beat the Texas Longhorns at home next week.

With Oklahoma beating Baylor, it opens the door for the Pacific-12 Conference to gain some ground towards the Top Four for the College Football Playoffs.

Mario Cristobal and the #6 ranked Oregon Ducks clinched the Pac-12 North Division title with two Pac-12 games to spare as they go to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in Pac-12 play after beating the Arizona Wildcats, 34-6.

Oregon Ducks QB Justin Herbert completed 20 of 28 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns as the Ducks will have a tricky test on the road next week in Tempe against the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Meanwhile in the Pac-12 South Division race, Kyle Whittingham and the #7 ranked Utah Utes stay on top after crushing the UCLA Bruins, 49-3.

Utes QB Tyler Huntley completed 14 of 18 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns and Utah RB Zack Moss added 200 total scrimmage yards including 127 rushing and two rushing majors.

The Utah defense sacked UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson five times and had five takeaways including a scoop and six in the second quarter.

Utah will take on the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson next week.

Re: 2019 NCAA Division I College Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

BB55's Three Studs and Three Duds - College Football Week 12

    Three Studs
    1. Oklahoma Sooners
Why? Jalen Hurts and OU were down 31-10 at halftime as Baylor dominated the first half.

But Hurts and the Sooners kept chipping away and broke Baylor Bears' hearts with a 24-0 second-half shutout.

Both of them are still in line for a rematch in the Big XII Championship Game if they win next week.

    2. Virginia Tech Hokies
Why? Justin Fuente's Hokies not only clinch a bowl game for another year after a 45-0 shutout over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but with five straight wins in ACC play, the Hokies have a shot at winning the ACC Coastal Division if they beat the Pittsburgh Panthers and their Commonwealth Cup rival Virginia Cavaliers in the final two weeks.

    3. Kentucky Wildcats QB Lynn Bowden
Why? Bowden had 214 total offensive yards and two total offensive touchdowns in Kentucky's 38-16 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores as the Wildcats are one win away from bowl eligibility.

    Three Duds
    1. Alabama Crimson Tide's playoff hopes
Why? It was a costly 38-7 win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Tua Tagovailoa is lost for the year with a hip injury and the Georgia Bulldogs beating the Auburn Tigers.

The Tide need lots of help to get in the College Football Playoffs. They need to win their final two games against the Western Carolina Catamounts and their Iron Bowl showdown against Auburn, have the LSU Tigers lose out for the SEC West and have the Big XII and Pacific-12 champions have two losses.

It's not looking rosy in Tuscaloosa.

    2. Akron Zips
Why? Not a good start for Tom Arth in Akron. The Zips are the only winless team in FBS play at 0-10 overall and 0-8 in Mid-American play.

    Yikes.

    3. Texas Longhorns
Why? Tom Herman's third season in Austin is disappointing. From winning a New Year's Six bowl game in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia to just trying to get a winning record makes the Longhorns a major disappointment in college football in 2019.

Should Utah State win that game, and Boise State, Utah State, and Air Force all win out, my beloved Air Force Falcons would come out ahead on a three-team tie-breaker.

Air Force is 8-0 in games I've attended this year (Colgate, at Colorado, San Jose State, Fresno State, at Hawaii, Utah State, Army, and at Colorado State). And, they're 0-2 in the games I did NOT attend (at Boise State, at Navy). I wasn't planning on heading to Albuquerque this weekend, but might need to re-think that. The team obviously needs me there.
