Re: 2019 NCAA Division I College Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

Dan Mullen and the #8 ranked Florida Gators survived by the skin of their teeth after holding off Manny Diaz's Miami Hurricanes, 24-20 inside Orlando, Florida's Camping World Stadium to kick off the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS College Football season.

Diaz, who is making his Miami (FL) coaching debut taking over for the retired Mark Richt, started the scoring as Bubba Baxa booted a 36-yard field goal almost 10 minutes into the game to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead.

Florida responded with the first touchdown of the game as the Gators converted a fake punt on fourth down to keep the drive alive thanks to Tommy Townsend scampering six yards for a first down.

That play set up Feleipe Franks throwing a 66-yard bomb to Kadarius Toney to give the Gators a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.

It was all Miami in the second quarter as the Hurricanes outscored the Gators 10-0 thanks to two lost Florida fumbles from Franks and Malik Davis off bad exchanges.

However, Miami can only muster up a total of three points from those two takeaways as Baxa connects on his second field goal of the game from 42 yards out to cut the deficit to one point, 7-6.

Diaz's squad finally found the end zone as Jarren Williams finds Brevin Jordan from 25 yards out off a deflection to give Miami a 13-7 halftime lead.

Florida responded with a 10-0 third quarter surge to take a 17-13 lead heading to the fourth.

Evan McPherson kicked a 27-yard field goal to make it 13-10 Miami and a Jeff Thomas lost fumble off a muffed punt set up Franks throwing his second touchdown of the game to Lamical Perine from eight yards out to give Florida a 17-13 lead.

Miami drew first blood in the fourth quarter however as DeeJay Dallas burst his way to the end zone with a 50-yard run to give Miami a 20-17 lead 45 seconds into the fourth.

The Hurricanes' momentum continues as Amari Carter picked off a Franks' pass for the Gators' third turnover of the game.

The Canes had another set of downs as the Gators had an unnecessary roughness penalty off a fake field goal attempt as Baxa was clobbered after going out of bounds.

Miami wasted their chance though as Baxa missed from 27 yards out, wide right.

Florida made the Hurricanes pay as Franks barrels his way for a three-yard touchdown run as Florida led 24-20 with 8:18 to go in the fourth.

Miami busted out their turnover chain again as Franks threw his second pick of the game to give the Hurricanes a chance to take the lead late with a score.

However, the Gators defense had a lot of heat on Williams all game long with 10 sacks.

The Miami Hurricanes had only three points off their four takeaways in the loss.

Franks 254 passing yards and three total offensive scores, but had three of Florida's turnovers.

Williams had 214 passing yards in a losing effort while Dallas chipped in with 89 on the ground.

Penalties also didn't help either team as Miami had 14 for 118 yards while Florida was flagged nine times for 108 as the Gators grabbed an ugly win.

Utah RB Zack Moss pounded the BYU rushing defense with 181 yards and a score on 29 carries as the Utes once led 30-6.

Ty'Son Williams scored BYU's only touchdown of the game with 9:19 left in regulation, a 10-yard scamper.

Re: 2019 NCAA Division I College Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Hawkeyes dodged a massive upset bullet.

The #21 ranked team in the nation needed three overtimes to outlast FCS school Northern Iowa Panthers, 29-26 in front of their fans in Ames.

The only scoring in the first half came from Cyclones K Connor Assalley with a 42-yard field goal as the Cyclones led 3-0 at halftime.

Northern Iowa tied the game at 3-3 a little over two minutes into the third quarter as Matthew Cook booted a 50-yard field goal.

The first touchdown of the game came with 8:31 left in the third quarter as Brock Purdy found La'Michael Pettway from seven yards out to give Iowa State a 10-3 lead.

However, the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to close out the third quarter with a 13-10 advantage heading into the fourth.

Cook kicked his second field goal of the game from 31 yards out and the Northern Iowa defense gave their team seven points when Purdy was drilled from behind and fumbled the ball.

Xavior Williams scooped up the loose ball and took it back 53 yards.

It looked like Northern Iowa was going to grab the scalp, but Assalley forced overtime with a 23-yard field goal as the game was tied at 13-all with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.

Iowa State won the toss and elected defense first.

Cook gave the Panthers a 16-13 lead with a 49-yard field goal before Assalley forced Double Overtime with a 22-yard field goal tied at 16.

The Purdy to Pettway connection worked a second time as Iowa State grabbed a 23-16 lead.

Purdy completed 30 of 41 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

But Northern Iowa replied and forced Triple Overtime as Will McElvain found Trevor Allen from seven yards out to make it 23-all.

McElvain had 228 yards on 25 of 42 passing and a touchdown despite being sacked three times.

Northern Iowa took a 26-23 lead in the third overtime period after Cook booted his fourth field goal of the game from 28 yards out, but Sheldon Croney Jr. won it for the Cyclones with a one-yard score up the gut.

Meanwhile, Scott Frost and the #24 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers held off a gamed South Alabama Jaguars squad, 35-21 inside Lincoln Memorial Stadium.

Dedrick Mills got the party started with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Cornhuskers a 7-0 lead.

But South Alabama tied the game at 7-7 before the end of the first quarter as Cephus Johnson found paydirt with a three-yard touchdown run.

Mills' second one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave Nebraska a 14-7 lead.

Nebraska used their defense and special teams to create a 14-0 run to give themselves a 28-7 a little over three-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter.

Eric Lee Jr. had a 38-yard pick-six and JD Spielman returned a Jack Brooks punt 76 yards into the house.

But South Alabama refused to quit.

Johnson took advantage of two Nebraska turnovers in the quarter and threw two touchdown passes to cut Nebraska's lead to seven heading into the fourth quarter, 28-21.

After Spielman fumbled a punt, Johnson found Davyn Flenord from nine yards out and after a Adrian Martinez interception, Johnson found Khameron Taylor from 13 yards out.

But Johnson put the ball on the ground in the fourth when Alex Davis scored on his lost fumble to help Nebraska pull away in the game.

Johnson had 241 passing yards and three total touchdowns, but the Cornhuskers defense had four sacks and had five takeaways in the win.

The #5 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes start the Ryan Day era with a 45-21 triumph over the Florida Atlantic Owls inside the Horseshoe.

The Nitany Lions defense had seven sacks on Idaho QB's Mason Petrino and Colton Richardson.

David Shaw and the #25 ranked Stanford Cardinal start off their 2019 season with a 17-7 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats.

After a scoreless first quarter, Stanford took a 10-0 halftime lead when K.J. Costello found Michael Wilson from two yard out and Jet Toner booted a 51-yard field goal.

Costello completed 16 of 20 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown, but had to leave the game after taking a forearm to the head which made Shaw and the Stanford bench furious for the referees not calling targeting on the play.

After a scoreless third quarter, Northwestern drew first blood in the fourth when John Moten IV punched in a one-yard plunge into the end zone to make it 10-7 with 7:49 left in regulation.

What an absolute thrilling finish inside Arlington's AT&T Stadium!

Gus Malzahn and the #16 ranked Auburn Tigers rallied to break the hearts of Mario Cristobal and the #11 Oregon Ducks, 27-21!

The Ducks raced out to a 21-6 lead with a little over nine minutes to go in the third quarter.

CJ Verdell, who had 76 yards on the ground, started the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run.

Anders Carlson got Auburn on the board with a 40-yard field goal.

Justin Herbert, who completed 28 of 37 passes for 242 yards in the contest, throws his only touchdown of the game, a 20-yard strike to Spencer Webb, before the first quarter ended as the Ducks led 14-3.

Carlson booted his second field goal of the game from 25 yards out to cut Oregon's lead to eight, 14-6 at halftime.

When Darrian Felix found the end zone with a six-yard scamper, Oregon led 21-6 with 9:23 remaining in the third quarter.

Auburn true freshman QB Bo Nix struggled throwing two interceptions, but he and Auburn refused to die.

Nix helped Auburn found the end zone for the first time in the game as he connects with Eli Stove from 11 yards out to make it an eight-point deficit, 21-13 heading into the fourth.

Joey Gatewood made it a one-point game, 21-20 with 9:48 to go with a one-yard bang into the end zone.

Auburn also made a key fourth-down stop and forced a punt with 2:21 to go. Auburn had fourth and three from their own 47-yard line with 1:34 left. Nix scrambled for the first down at midfield, but only just as the nose of the football lined up with the chains.

JaTarvious Whitlow, who had 110 rushing yards in the game, made a key third-down conversion and Nix connected with Seth Williams for another key third-down conversion as Auburn was driving to the 26-yard line with 21 seconds left.

Nix was the hero on the next throw as he finds Williams with a 26-yard touchdown strike to give Auburn a 27-21 lead with nine seconds left.

Williams had a costly penalty though as he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for spiking the ball after the touchdown.

Daewood Davis gave Oregon a chance with a kick return to Auburn's 36-yard line.

But Herbert's last second pass sails over the end zone and Auburn survives in a thrilling comeback.

Nix had 219 yards of total offense and two touchdown passes despite throwing two interceptions in the victory.

Both teams scored 14 points in the first quarter.

But Tony Jones Jr., who had 110 rushing yards in the game, scampered his way into the end zone from 11 yards out to tie the game at 14-all.

It was all Notre Dame from there.

Ian Book ran in from 11 yards out to give the Irish a 21-14 halftime lead and threw his only touchdown of the game to Tommy Tremble down the middle from 26 yards out to give Notre Dame a 28-14 lead after three quarters.

Smith put the cherry on top with a one-yard punch halfway through the fourth quarter.

Book completed 14 of 23 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown and added 81 yards on the ground and a score.
