To be fair, it seems like it's much less about Mariano, and more so about not believing closers are really all that valuable.

He also said he's not submitting a ballot this year at the very end of the article.

Which is why Rivera won't be unanimous. There are writers who believe no reliever should get in.

There always will be someone who will not vote for someone who is a lock to be a HOF first ballot! Big ego usually is the reason for someone who does this.

Neither did I, but apparently I have a proxy.

I thought the writer made a thoughtful and rational argument. It may not be one everyone agrees with, but nothing about it sounded like it was his big ego talking.

Neither Rose nor Miller are on the ballot we're talking about.

    Let's put this into perspective. The HOF began in 1936. Five players were voted in. They were;

Ty Cobb 98.2% of the vote
    Babe Ruth 95.1 %
    Honus Wagner 95.1%
    Christy Mathewson 90.7%
    Walter Johnson 83.6%

Mariano will be in great company no matter how many votes he does or doesn't get. Lets cheer him on when he gets in and not bemoan that he didn't get on all ballots

Do not understand the fascination with this. I do not think any player will ever get 100% of the vote.

It is the writer's right, after all. Just as it is my right not to read his defense for not voting for Mo.

I find it interesting that he felt the need to write a defense in the first place. Deep down...

See - HOF voters have not liked quality pitchers since the beginning of the Hall.

Couldn't agree more, why care if he's unanimous? Unanimous votes are for the Soviet Union and certain banana republics. He is going to get in easily on the first ballot. The system will work for him. All is well.

I have waited 45 years for the Writers to vote in a career Yankees player. So really do not care what his percentage will be.

The only plausible candidates I can think or are Mattingly and Bernie. I donít think either one is a Hall of Famer.

Bernie has the better argument, I'd say.

I see Bernie as being in the inner-circle elite of the Hall of Pretty Darn Good.

You could have a point, fratello. Sure would like to see him make the cut, though. Of the real HOF, I mean.

Oh come on. He was a lifetime Yankee despite that' Yogi was hired in 1964 to be the Yankee manager and he won the AL Championship after losing the WS to the Cards. He was understandably irritated so he went to the Mets under his old boss Casey Stengel, and after Gill Hodges suddenly died he became the Mets manager in 1972 and won the NL pennant there. He has tp be considered a lifetime Yankee.

But my hat off to you, Philleotardo, you goy it correct

Yogi Berra was voted into the Hall in 1972. The last two career Yankees to be voted in were Ford and Mantle in 1974. Hence my waiting 45 years since it last occurred. Of course Yogi counts as a career Yankee.
