To be fair, it seems like it's much less about Mariano, and more so about not believing closers are really all that valuable.

Which is why Rivera won't be unanimous. There are writers who believe no reliever should get in.

There always will be someone who will not vote for someone who is a lock to be a HOF first ballot! Big ego usually is the reason for someone who does this.

Neither did I, but apparently I have a proxy.

Neither Rose nor Miller are on the ballot we're talking about.

    Let's put this into perspective. The HOF began in 1936. Five players were voted in. They were;

Ty Cobb 98.2% of the vote
    Babe Ruth 95.1 %
    Honus Wagner 95.1%
    Christy Mathewson 90.7%
    Walter Johnson 83.6%

Mariano will be in great company no matter how many votes he does or doesn't get. Lets cheer him on when he gets in and not bemoan that he didn't get on all ballots

He also said he's not submitting a ballot this year at the very end of the article.

I think it should be pointed out again that this writer will not submit a ballot, because he doesnít want to be the reason Rivera isnít elected unanimously.

This is true but it won't matter. There will be voters who will not vote for Mo. Just like there were voters who did not vote for Griffey Jr. And there will be voters who will skip Jeter next season. It's not going to change. Just enjoy a career Yankees player being voted in. Has not happened in 45 years.

Honestly, it doesnít matter that much to me if a career Yankee is voted in. It hasnít happened in 45 years on merit. It wonít affect my appreciation of Rivera even a tiny bit.

Besides, itís not a Hall of Fame without Marvin Miller.

    So, you could care less?

Dan Shaughnessy has only voted one player. Mo survived.

Re: Voter says he wont vote for Rivera..

So getting close to the announcement, here's where things stand on publicly revealed ballots (204 total, of which 5 are anonymous. Based on the past few years, there will probably be a few dozen more ballots revealed before the announcement tomorrow):

    Mo - 100%
    Halladay - 92.6%
    Edgar - 90.2%
    Moose - 80.9%
    Schilling - 71.6%
    Clemens - 70.6%
    Bonds - 70.1%
    L Walker - 65.2%

Since people started revealing their ballots prior to the announcement, only Griffey Jr. was at 100% on the public, pre-announcement ballots. Maddux, Pedro, Unit, etc... were all left off at least 1 public ballot, so while it's no surprise Mo is going in overwhelmingly, he's doing well even in the context of the other guys who got massive support.

Moose is going to be very close. He's always done about 7% better on the public, pre-announcement ballots than overall, so he will just miss it, or just make it. Schilling's up about 10% from where he was last year, and he'll probably be in the low to mid 60's, and looks like he'll make it in in a few years. Bonds and Clemens are up about 6% from where they were last year, and look like they'll be in in a few years as well. Walker's made a huge jump (38.5% on public, pre-announcement ballots last year), and will probably be pretty close in his final year next year.

Pettitte's at 6.4%, and will probably fall off the ballot when the final totals are in.

Funny he said he wouldn't submit the ballot as stated in the article.

Now he actually did vote. And he has voted Mo.

Among other reasons, he said he'll vote for Ortiz, and that was the biggest factor in reconsidering Mo.

Interesting. And through 55.3% of known ballots so far, Mo is unanimous.

You realize if someone did not vote for Mo he would not be admitting it until the vote is announced later. So that so far it's unanimous does not mean as much as you think. Griffey Jr was unanimous too until the final vote was announced.

If they ask who was our star, give them 25 names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.
