    2018 Jonathan Loaisiga Performance Thread

Being called up Thursday to make the spot start.

I, for one, am tremendously excited to see him.

I know he only threw 50 pitches (intentionally) on Sunday, but I still think it's odd they are using him on 3 days rest when they could have easily given him the extra day. I'm sure it's about lining up other guys but still a bit odd.

I agree about the extra day - Saturday but I like Boone giving the extra day. I am always excited to see a new prospect but if he didn't pitch Sunday it would have around 12 days since his last start so I think this is good. (took his 1st L on Sunday but he probably knew and maybe looked at this as practice)

I just don't understand skipping Severino Friday on full rest. He is our ace right?

He's the ace. But is also on pace to blow past 200 innings and he'll anchor a deep postseason run. An extra day of rest in middle of June is fine. I expect Boone to regulate his workload as season continues. A skip of the turn here and there. They need him healthy and fresh as possible in October.

Wonder what his PC will be. They've been extremely careful with him in the minors.

I'd guess 80, which on a good night means ~5 innings.

I give him the New York Spanglish name of Jonathan Loisaida.

I was right that it made no sense to start him on 3 days rest, that was a mistaken announcement by NY and he is actually starting on full rest on Friday. Onward fellow Jonathan!

Don't expect him in the rotation permanently this year he has never pitched more than 80 innings a season.
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

I don't think it's ever been their intention to have him in the rotation permanently even if he succeeds. He is the first try at filling in the 4-6 starts Tanaka may miss. One start at a time I think.

Excellent stuff. What impresses me the most is his feel of breaking pitches.

He became the first Yankee since 1908 (probably ever) to win his MLB debut with at least 5 scoreless innings and at least 6 strikeouts.

Re: 2018 Jonathan Loaisiga Performance Thread

Loaisiga isnít a big guy at 5-11, 165, but he has no shortage of arm strength, working with a fastball that can hit 98 and a plus breaking ball. His change-up isnít quite as consistent as the curve but he projects as a starter. Although he walked four in his MLB debut his command and control where one of his best attributes in the minors and this will likely be true in the majors as well once he gets a bit more experience.

Grade-wise, the pre-season C+ made sense for a guy who was in the New York-Penn League last year but is certainly too low right now. I think heís at least a Grade B and you can make a case for more.

Don't agree about his changeup. Was just as strong if not stronger than the curveball last night.

Most of the changeups had more side-to-side movement but they were well located on or off the outside corner as well as enough fade and arm-speed to work well. He threw a couple devastating changeups that had bottom and tumble to them that show what kind of potential that pitch can have for Jonny L. Ultra impressive stuff, even with the nerve-induced walks. (And it seemed early on that he was also not getting anyhing from the ump on any pitches remotely close to the corners)

Still, his breaking ball was even better IMO. He threw some real yackers for swinging strikes that were just beautiful to watch as Rays hitters flailed at it.

The pitch also featured above-average spin of 2,366 rpms, per Statcast data, and above-average lift at 9.5 inches.

While he missed with this following location, the fastball got over the swing of Wilson Ramos.

A high-velocity, high-spin fastball? Check. A swing-and-miss breaking ball? Check. What appears to be a potentially plus changeup? Check. Plus command? Thatís what Loaisiga demonstrated in the minors. Thatís a very intriguing skill set and starting point. And itís yet another out-of-nowhere success story for the Yankees, who are either having incredible luck with these types of high-upside, high-risk, low-cost arms, or Brian Cashman and company are on to something.

Re: 2018 Jonathan Loaisiga Performance Thread

Yeah, we'll see as today's game is a good match up for Loaisiga as I still have some doubts about him. Not about his stuff, but whether he's ready for the majors. Not many innings at AA ball and not a lot of innings in any league for that matter. There is still a lot of room for developmental growth. Can he do so on the major league level and still keep the Yankees in most of his games pitched? It remains to be seen. I wanted GermŠn to remain in the majors because I think he's good enough to keep the Yankees in most of his starts. I'm not so sure about Loaisiga yet.
