German and Torres are the most exciting today.

But Walker is showing he can contribute this year.

What a great game! Great year so far!

This. An unofficial nod to Shreve for making the setup rally in the 8th stick.

The fact that Torres WPA wasnt 1.000 is pretty dumb. He won the game for them? His hit added 100% probability to a win.

    The game was tied already.

WPA is calculated as the (probability of wining before) - (probability of winning after). So without looking at the actual numbers, if we had a probability of winning of 75% before Gleyber hit the HR and 100% after, then the WPA for that event would be 0.250.

For the curious, here are the Yankees WPA numbers by at-bat for the 8th and 9th innings. For each at-bat, the first number is the impact (positive or negative) on the Yankees' win probability, and the second number is the Yankees' win probability immediately after that at-bat.

As you can see, Neil Walker's game-tying double was worth 36%. His walk in the 8th was worth another 3%, so he's the only guy who contributed to both rallies.

Torres' homer was worth 28.7%, followed closely by the 24.4% that Aaron Hicks contributed. Judge's double was good for 17.8%.

    8th Inning
    Neil Walker walked. 3.00% 7.70%
Miguel Andujar flied out to shortstop (Fly). -2.90% 4.80%
Tyler Austin walked. Neil Walker advanced to 2B. 3.20% 8.10%
Gleyber Torres flied out to center (Fly). -3.80% 4.20%
Brett Gardner singled to center (Liner). Neil Walker scored. Tyler Austin advanced to 3B. 5.00% 9.20%
Aaron Judge doubled to right (Grounder). Tyler Austin scored. Brett Gardner scored. 17.80% 27.00%
Didi Gregorius was intentionally walked. 2.30% 29.40%
Gary Sanchez flied out to center (Fly). -12.40% 17.00%

    9th Inning
Aaron Hicks doubled to center (Fliner (Fly)). 24.40% 45.50%
Neil Walker doubled to right (Fliner (Liner)). Aaron Hicks scored. 36.00% 81.60%
Miguel Andujar grounded out to third (Grounder). -11.30% 70.30%
Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked. 1.00% 71.30%
Gleyber Torres homered (Fly). Neil Walker scored. Giancarlo Stanton scored. 28.70% 100.00%

Two Team Heroes today: Domingo Germán and Gleyber Torres. Both made the history books.
    • Gleyber Torres became the youngest player in franchise history (21 years, 144 days) to hit a walk-off home run.
    • Domingo Germán became the first pitcher (ever, it seems) to total at least nine strikeouts with zero hits allowed in his first start.
Honorable Mention: Brett Gardner, the Aarons (Judge and Hicks), Neil Walker.

And Gian Carlo Stanton, for inducing Francona to walk him, in order to get to Torres.

I always find these interesting; thanks for posting. The Stanton walk is one of those little wrinkles - I guess win% goes up slightly because of the risk of Walker getting thrown out/picked off, but Stanton then being in a position to score with 2 outs.

The +1% for the walk is a bit odd, I admit. Regardless of who's being walked and who's coming up next (WPA doesn't factor any of that in anyway), you'd think it benefits the defense to put a meaningless run on base with less than two outs, setting up a DP or a force at any base. But I would think, more than a pickoff, the 1% increase is because another walk would put a runner 90 feet away.
