Re: The Official A.J. Cole Performance Discussion

Was surprised to see him in the 8th, 6-2 isn't exactly blowout territory. Just what the doctor ordered for a bullpen where every major dude had to work yesterday in Washington. I can only surmise Rothschild must have really, REALLY liked what he saw from Cole in that unusual postgame work-off-the-game-mound bullpen session Saturday and told Boone he could help.

Re: The Official A.J. Cole Performance Discussion

He had one job tonight and it was to save the pen. He did well.

I can see why they liked him despite his struggles with Nats. Above-avg spin on breaking pitches and topped 96 tonight with sinking action.

Re: The Official A.J. Cole Performance Discussion

In regard to Cole and his lack of usage, the only thing I can think of that makes sense is that the Yankees are attempting to break him down as a pitcher and then build him back up while doing so on the fly. They don't have the options of sending him down nor spring training camp so they're doing it now, mid-season. Obviously, they like what they see which is why they've kept him on the active 25 man roster.

It's just a theory of mine, but I hope they use him more going forward because the bullpen can use his appearances to reduce the usage of other relievers.

Nice job tonight, see you some time in August. More Cole, less Shreve.

I wonder how often a team's last 8 relief appearances were by 8 pitchers.

Cole was terrific last night, but maybe when youíre carrying a pitcher whom you use once a month, you should keep Torreyes up instead.

Someone at work here asked the same thing in the coffee room this morning. I said I would bet it happens more often than we think, but I have no way of knowing/proving that.

I am sure it has happened for several teams in Sept., with the expanded rosters.

If you make it include every reliever (which the Yankees have 8 of now), it wouldn't happen easily in September.

He went on the disabled list with a strained neck.

Cole had just about the worst outing you could imagine for SWB tonight. He started the game and was lifted after not retiring any of 5 hitters he faced.

    0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 WP

    As a Yankee: 0.69

I was just happy with Sheffield throwing 6 scoreless...

I don't have much faith in Cole to begin with....

Well, he did pitch in Allentown (where they're closing all the factories down) tonight, so, yes, it un-strained I guess.

He had to have been working on a new pitch or pitching strategy.

Not to say that hes all of a sudden above average, but AAAA pitchers generally do very well in AAA and not impersonate Shreve.

Small sample size or not -- He has been doing his job when called upon. No sense dissing him at this point in time.
Standings: Big Inning 32-16; Blue Cut 27-21; Shoo Fly 26-22; Husk 22-26; Frank Pierce 21-27; Iowa City 16-32.

Re: The Official A.J. Cole Performance Discussion

Heís had a little bit of prospect shine before. He was a potential late 1st round pick out of HS, but fell to the 4th due to U of Miami commit (Nationals gave him 2M). A couple of prospect rankings had him in the 70-90 range.
Maybe this is just the right role. The price was certainly right.
