gary has showed in the playoffs how dangerous a hitter he can be... he had a great at bat vs kimbrel and almost won the game.. romine is a backup and that is that...

watching some of these other catchers in the playoffs, Gary Sanchez doesn't look like the worst defensive catcher ever

Grandol of the Dodgers and Maldonado of the Astros had passed balls in their division championship series due to the pressure of the playoffs.

This is what they need to address in the offseason.

    v R (wRC+)
    2016: 188
    2017: 129
    2018: 72

Why this has happened and how they can correct it.
    Calmer than you are

7/30/2017: The day the Minnesota Twins bought a prospect from the New York Yankees.

To me Gary is almost everything that is wrong with the yankees position players rolled into one player. He cant play defense. His offense relies too much in the hr ball. He is slow and doesnt hustle.

No question. When he is hitting, you can live with some passed balls. Need to get him back to 2017 form. I'm not going to dream about 2016 form, 2017 form will do just fine.

Gary will improve his catching ability by 2019 spring training's end. He is already a good framer and can gun the ball to 2B like no one can. He needs to continue to work on his feet position and sign communication with the pitchers.

As for his .180 BA, that was an aberration.

His caught stealing was only at 30%. And has been going down every year since he came to the majors. Meanwhile his passed balls went up to 18 (league leader), even though he only caught about 75 games. Obviously during the playoffs he did do better, but that's only 5 games. I have no faith in his body holding up to being a full time catcher. We saw him break down twice this year and he is still young. Could you imagine what is going to happen when he gets older? Also, I dont think Sanchez has the concentration or the mental awareness to be a full time catcher.

The yankees have been trying to improve his catching ability for years now. And before boone, they had two catchers in joe g and tony Pena on the coaching staff. They couldn't get him right what makes you think all of a sudden he is going to figure it out?

Sanchez' problem isn't that he can't catch, it's that he doesn't catch well consistently. He'll go a few games and do everything right, then look like a player out of position for the next week. Who knows what that's all about, but it would seem to be mostly a mental problem. If it can be fixed he's a huge asset, if not he's a DH.
    Let the kids play.

I've said it before and I will say it again. The Yankees are in a tough spot with 3+ DH's on the team. But yes, sanchez's problem seem to be mental which is almost worse than physical. Cause you never know when the issues are going to pop up.

Yankees don’t care as much about pb’s as the fans seem to. Sanchez is a good catcher otherwise. Sanchez is our starting catcher for the foreseeable future. And he caught well when it mattered most.

His attempted steals per game have also been going down each year by a lot. They simply don’t run on him any more unless they’re sure they can make it. Since runners steal off the pitcher and not the catcher, you have to factor that in. You can’t simply look at CS%. Runners know that Gary has a cannon and they don’t want to be gunned down by him.

Give credit where credit is due.
