I mean, after all folks, you can't predict baseball. So, naturally, he'll pitch a no-hitter.

Not a CG, but a 6 inning shutout so we can call it result A. Now what?

It definitely looked like he made a noticeable adjustment. Before when he went into his windup he bring the glove away from his body but tonight he kept the glove close to his body throughout his windup.

Just something that caught my attention. His fastball also looked like it had more sink and movement on it.

Funny - he made the opposite adjustment in April.

"It's just a little adjustment in his windup," Aaron Boone said. "With his hands, we think he might pull out and be a little more athletic, because that's one of his strengths, athleticism. So he actually identified it, and it's something he's done in the past. So he incorporated that a bit today and felt good about the results."

Re: 2018 Sonny Gray Performance Thread

Wild thought - given that the ASB is right around the corner, would it make sense to send Sonny Gray down to SWB (or Trenton) to have him throw a start on his regular schedule?

Coming out of the ASB, I would think that Severino, CC and Tanaka all make starts before Gray's turn comes up, which means his next start likely is the 23rd, which is more than ten days away.

It's nice for him to have the ASB rest, but I want him to build on today's outing - maybe send him down and have Sanchez catch that start as a rehab outing?

I would totally do that, don't think the Yankees will, though.

Has it been noticed that a pitch hes basically never had until this year (cutter) is being thrown a 1/4 of the time, hes basically abandoned his change, and he only thrown his FB a third of the time (a career low by far).

    Maybe the FO broke him.

Today, he threw almost exclusively 2-seamers and curves, his bread and butter pitches... he may be one of the few SPs who may not actually benefit from the anti-FB approach they’ve adopted (although he always tends to own the O’s, so this may just be an anamy)

Either way. The Yankee way isnt working. Let him go back to what made him good in Oakland.

Should be a precautionary tale for any young pitcher people want.

    Edit: Jesus.....45 curves, 38 2-seamers. Basically Archer-like.

It's been brought up several times that his FB% is down this year. Seems like one-size-fits-all thinking.

I agree, let him mix his pitches a la the Oakland years. Nothing left to lose at this point.

Re: 2018 Sonny Gray Performance Thread

Last night the game was called by Kenny & Flash. Of course, Michael Kay & others have called some of the starts by Sonny Gray.

I've noticed, maybe others have made mention of it before, but what is up with every announcer making mention of his full name during the course of conversation, "Sonny Gray."

Our other pitchers it's, 'CC' or 'Sabathia' or 'Severino' or 'German' or 'Tanaka,' etc, etc.

What gives? Any idea why it's always, "Sonny Gray" and not just "Sonny" or "Gray?"

BTW, awesome game by Sonny Gray. (There, I did it too!)

Rolls off the tongue well. I had a friend in middle school who I always called by his first and last name for that reason. He didn't really like it though lol

I figured that must be the case. I just wondered if anyone else has noticed this as well?

I've been searching my memory for any MLB player with a one-syllable last name to make a comparison. Surely there are some, but I can't recall any active players at the moment.
