Today, the New York Post reported the following:

His right ring finger bleeds like Chuck Wepner’s New Jersey mug, and lately it has affected the grip Dellin Betances gets on the ball cradled in his right hand late in games.

“Try to do the best I can. It’s tender right now I guess,’’ Betances said of the cut finger after he escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth to preserve a 4-2 Yankees win over the Mariners at Safeco Field on Saturday night. “I am doing the best I can. I hope it heals. There is lots of blood and the grip becomes uncomfortable.’’

Whitey Ford could teach Dellin how to use that blood to his advantage.

Thank you Dellin for blowing another game! You bum. The putrid Jays took 2 out of 3 from the pathetic Tankees's offense.

Seems this team is just really content backing into that second wild card.

Passed Ralph Terry on the all-time Yankee K list. That’s kinda amazing.

Wow that really is. Ralph led the American League in games started in 1962 and 1963 and pitched all or part of 8 seasons as a Yankee starting pitcher. In 1962 he threw 299 innings. Different era, different game.

He's still alive. One of the dwindling number of 1961 Yankees who are still with us.

He was the golf pro after he retired at our local golf club, while he tried to get on the tour. I had a golf partner who was also a rabid Yankee fan, and if Ralph wasn't busy he'd play nine holes with us for free. I love that guy.

Actually, I screwed that up a little. Tied Terry, passed Spud Chandler

Now I bummed. And I popped open a bottle of champagne because you said he passed Ralph Terry on the Yankees all-time strike out list. Oh well, but I guess I'll have an excuse to open another bottle.

Probably for another thread, but I was looking at the Yankees' top 50 after reading the Dellin stat. Some of the offensive numbers surprised me. For example, OPS 1-4 is pretty obvious (Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle), but 5-11:

    Keller
    Giambi
    A-Rod
    Reggie
    Sheffield
    Selkirk
    Mike Stanley

Yogi is all the way down to 31.

And Judge and Didi are both already top 50 in HRs.

If Chapman doesn't get his act together after the Yankees clinch a Wild Card berth, the 9th inning save by committee (Britton or Betances or Robertson) will be deployed.

His career was pretty much toast by age 28. Probably explains why they don’t burn guys out like that any more.

I noticed that Boone has been inserting Chapman in "hold" situations and not his usual 9th inning save scenario. Chapman just pitched a scoreless 7th and in came Betances for the 8th inning. I assume Boone will summon Britton for the 9th inning.

Re: 2018 Dellin Betances Performance Thread

Staked to a 7-run lead, Betances had a below par outing tonight.

Re: 2018 Dellin Betances Performance Thread

Betances pitched 2 effective innings tonight. Boone better take him out and replace him with Chad Green top of the 7th.

Robertson should pitch the 8th with Chapman in the 9th.
