Re: 2018 Masahiro Tanaka Performance Thread

The notion that the DH is more likely to come to the NL than pitchers hitting in the American League is underscored by the declining production of pitchers at the plate. This year, pitchers are batting a combined .112 in just over 2,000 plate appearances, on pace to set the all-time low.

Additionally, pitchers have shown a lack of durability at the plate. Notably, the Mets' Jacob deGrom hyperextended his pitching elbow swinging the bat last month, and just this past weekend, the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka strained both of his hamstrings running to home plate on a sacrifice fly.

Any word yet on whether he's coming back for Monday's double-header?

Boone already announced he's pitching Tuesday. CC is pitching one of the games Monday with everybody's favorite Cessa pitching the other game.

He's not. CC and TBA will start. Tanaka will be back Tuesday.

Re: 2018 Masahiro Tanaka Performance Thread

If he pitches every five games for the rest of the year at his current innings per start, he will pitch 161 2/3 innings if you round to the nearest 1/3. Therefore it could be close to see if he reaches 162 innings to qualify. Tanaka is 8-2 and would be tied for fourth in MLB in winning percentage if he qualified. https://www.baseball-reference.com/l..._top_ten.shtml uses a different standard for qualifying for winning percentage. They require 0.1 decisions per team game. Once baseball-reference updates tomorrow, he will be listed. Do you think pitchers should qualify for winning percentage based on innings or decisions?

If Tanaka pitches like that and Sevy pitches at the top of his game in the playoffs as well, this team can win the WS. Several key ifs and certainly nothing assured. But reason to hope.

Re: 2018 Masahiro Tanaka Performance Thread

    14 groundouts and 0 flyouts.

That is the kind of stat we need to see from him.

That's right in Sevy's class, who stands at 1.05. The 4.09 ERA is a little high still, but we all know he can turn in gems like this, even against good hitting teams.

Severino, Tanaka, CC and Gray. At least our bullpen has just been reinforced.

His ERA is 3.84 and is below 4.00 for the first time since after his second start.

What about Happ? He's at least higher than Gray on the depth chart, IMO.

Tanaka is undefeated in his last 13 starts, 7-0 with a 3.20 ERA in that span. He's 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA in his last five starts

He honestly looked terrible today. Luckily, Baltimore sucks. Sox, Astros, Indians, etc would have eaten him up.
