Re: 2018 NCAA Division I FBS and FCS College Football Thread

The legend of Gardner Minshew II is growing bigger in Pullman and probably the nation.

The Washington State Cougars QB led a game-winning drive as the #8 ranked team in the nation survived by the skin of their teeth against a gamed California Golden Bears squad 19-13 to go to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in Pacific-12 play.

Minshew didn't have his best game completing 35 of 51 passes with 334 yards, a touchdown and a interception, but went 5 for 6 with 69 yards and the game-winning strike to Easop Winston Jr. from 10 yards out.

Cal's QB duo of Chase Garbers and Brandon McIlwain combined for 178 passing yards and a touchdown from Garbers to Malik McMorris from two yards out in the second quarter, but the Wazzou defense had five sacks and two takeaways.

One of the interceptions should've been a pick-six in the third quarter that could've gave them a 19-10 lead, but Willie Taylor III fumbled the ball before reaching the end zone and went out of bounds for a touchback. Cal got a field goal to make it 13-all after three quarters.

Wazzou's second interception should've gave them a 16-13 lead, but Blake Mazza, who kicked two field goals in the game, missed his chance for a third from 30 yards out, wide right.

Fortunately for Mazza, Mike Leach and Wazzou, Minshew II bailed them out with the game-winning drive.

Washington State has one road game next week against the Colorado Buffaloes while their Apple Cup rival Washington Huskies have a bye.

Cal still has three chances to clinch bowl eligibility despite the loss tonight, but will take on bitter foe USC Trojans next week inside L.A. Memorial.

Re: 2018 NCAA Division I FBS and FCS College Football Thread

Things are tightening up in the race for the two spots in the Big XII Championship Game.

The #7 ranked Oklahoma Sooners move to 8-1 overall including moving for a tie for top spot in the Big XII with the West Virginia Mountaineers at 5-1 after holding off the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a shootout in Lubbock, 51-48.

Oklahoma livewire QB Kyler Murray had 460 yards of total offense and had four total offensive touchdowns despite throwing two interceptions.

Trey Sermon was another hero for OU with 206 rushing yards and a rushing hat trick on 26 carries.

Texas Tech QB Alan Bowman completed 21 of 26 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, but was knocked out of the game with an injury.

His backup Jett Duffey added 186 yards of total offense and three total offensive scores including his four-yard strike to Zach Austin tied the game at 42 with 6:54 left.

However, Texas Tech missed the extra point and Oklahoma returned it for the two-points as the Sooners led 44-42.

OU and West Virginia are tied for top spot at 5-1 in Big XII play with three to play while the Texas Longhorns and Iowa State Cyclones are one game back at 4-2 in Big XII play.

Meanwhile, #23 ranked Fresno State Bulldogs go to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in Mountain West play after obliterating the Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels, 48-3.

Marcus McMaryion led the way with 274 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Four different Bulldogs scored one rushing touchdown.

Up next for Jeff Tedford's Fresno State will be a familiar foe in the Battle for the Milk Can rivalry, Boise State Broncos in the Smurf Turf.

Re: 2018 NCAA Division I FBS and FCS College Football Thread

BB55's Three Studs and Three Duds - College Football: Week 10

    Three Studs
    1. Michigan Wolverines
Why? Since their opening loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines won eight straight.

The Wolverines defense have yet to allow 25 or more points in any game this season and Karan Higdon leads the vaunted rushing attack.

The Maize and Blue have two tuneups before their showdown against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus on November 24.

    2. Dana Holgersen's gamble against the Texas Longhorns
Why? What a roll of the dice from the West Virginia Mountaineers head coach going for the win with a two-point conversion with Big XII title contending hopes on the line and converting with Will Grier's two-yard run.

    3. UTEP Miners
Why? The Miners ended the longest streak in FBS play at 20 with a 34-26 victory over the Rice Owls.

    Losers
    1. Bobby Petrino and the Louisville Cardinals
Why? Louisville's first year without Lamar Jackson continues to be a disaster going 2-7 overall including 0-6 in ACC play.

Brian VanGorder's first season in Louisville could be the only season as his defense gave up 50+ points in their fourth game of the season after the Clemson Tigers drilled them for 77.

    2. Miami Hurricanes
Why? Since the Hurricanes started 5-1 overall including 2-0 in ACC play, Mark Richt's Hurricanes lost three in a row and on the verge of not making a bowl game as they have a treacherous schedule in their final three games.

Malik Rosier has been poor this season and their offense needs to improve against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Virginia Tech Hokies and the Pittsburgh Panthers.

    3. Pacific-12 South Division
Why? All their teams have three losses in Pac-12 play. It's a fugly division in FBS play this season.

College football has surpassed the NBA for the least exciting sport. How is it fun to root for any team besides Alabama. They're so far and away better than the entire sport at this point. Also, if you're not in the top 4, what good is it to be ranked at all? Why do they have a top 25 when all that matters is the top 4. Once you're below 6 it's all the same. What difference is it if you're 12th vs 15th?

College football is much bigger then who is #1.
There are "bragging rights" games across the country every Saturday in college football.

I'm sure many people will be tuning in the championship game just to see if Clemson can
knock off Alabama. You do remember when Auburn beat Alabama a few years back on the missed field goal that was returned for a touchdown ? Awesome game.

Michigan - Ohio State looks like a great game this year. Harbaugh has never beaten Ohio State, and he finally has a good enough team to go up to the toilet bowl and hand it to the Buckeyes. I can't wait for that game.

Notre Dame has some great, exciting games coming up.

Plenty to be excited about in college football.

Listen, the Georgia - Alabama rematch this year should be interesting as well.

I understand there are regional rivalries and whatnot. What I don't get is what is the purpose of the rankings? Is it just bragging to say "a group of old white guys and a computer say my school is 12th best and yours is 18th best!"? Or is there something else to be gained by upping your ranking - knowing full well the same 6 teams fight it out for the 4 playoff spots every year?

I think it is a Top 4 league now, even though some of the higher "lesser" bowls pay a little more, so it is better to be a 5th ranked team so you can get more money in a "lesser" bowl.

It's become like MLB, where only a few select teams make it. Nothing is like the NHL playoffs, where a bottom seed can upset a top seed.

My rebuttal to this would be this.

Alabama has won it 2 of the last 3 years. All of the title games in this span were competitive and could’ve gone either way. Alabama also lost games in each of their 2 championship seasons. Yes this year they look way better than everyone else. But we have yet to see them play any of the 4 best teams below them. Teams ranked 2-5. I’d argue we don’t know how good alabama is yet

As for the rankings. They do matter somewhat based on Bowl placement, along with conference champions
Baseball games are not won with a formula. If you can hit, they will find a place for you

I'm not trying to be a troll. I'm truly ignorant. Grew up in NY and moved to RI - neither of which are college football hotbeds so it's something I just never got into.

If you're not in the playoff, what do you get other than pride for playing in the CarQuest Bowl or the one at Yankee Stadium? It's just $$ for the school right?

Yes. And after the big time bowls, I think a lot of the aren't even that profitable for schools. But obviously it's meaningful for the players, and it's one more game on tv, getting exposure for your program.

I know you’re not trying to be a troll lmao. There aresome good bowls that aren’t in the playoff. That being said, there are just way too many stupid bowls. I mean to be bowl eligible you basically have to be 6-6. I think nearly everyone would agree that there’s just way too many of them.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons get a vital win to keep their bowl eligibility hopes alive.

Dave Clawson's banged up squad went into Raleigh and stunned fellow rival and #14 ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack, 27-23.

NC State led 13-3 at halftime with two field goals of 29 and 23 yards from Christopher Dunn and a Ryan Finley two-yard touchdown run.

But Wake made a move outscoring the Wolfpack 10-3 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 16-13 heading into the fourth.

Nick Sciba kicked a 34-yard field goal and Wake third string QB Jamie Newman delivered a 38-yard strike to Alex Bachman.

Dunn kicked his third field goal of the game for NC State during the third quarter from 23 yards out.

Finley threw his only touchdown pass of the game early in the fourth quarter to Emeka Emezie from 35 yards out up the middle to give the Wolfpack a 23-13 lead.

Finley completed 35 of 52 passes for 374 yards and a touchdown to go along with his two-yard touchdown run, but also threw an interception.

Newman had a great fourth quarter to give Wake the win.

Newman found Greg Dortch from 19 yards out to make it 23-20 NC State with 6:07 remaining and threw the game-winning strike to Jack Freudenthal from 32 yards out with 30 seconds left to give the Demon Deacons their fifth win of the season.

Newman completed 22 of 33 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns despite being sacked four times.

Totally agree. Back in the 70s and early 80s there was just the right amount of bowls.
When all these other little bowls came along, there was very little interest in them.

I think the advancement of cable television helped these bowls, as the big networks would
    have never carried them.

I got home when that game was almost over. The clock ran out and a review put time on for Alabama to miss that field goal. It was on November 30, 2013. It was important for me because I'm a Florida State fan, and Florida State came back to beat Auburn in the Championship game.

I think Florida state would’ve beaten Alabama that year. I think they were head and shoulders the best team. Thing they played a little down to that auburn team

You're right that college football is much less popular in the northeast and New England. Penn State is in a northeastern state but closer to the midwest. If you exclude Penn State, the northeast and New England has only one of the top 43 in the Sagarin, and that's Boston College in 33rd. Going down to 100th only adds five more schools in the area, which are Syracuse, Army West Point, Temple, Buffalo, and Princeton (Princeton is undefeated in FCS and the Sagarin mixes FBS and FCS). I excluded Pittsburgh, who is in western Pennsylvania like Penn State. I excluded Maryland. Sometimes I think of Maryland as the southernmost state in the northeast, but the school is in southern Maryland. Georgia and Alabama have a combined 8 of the top 100 of the Sagarin, and those states combined have fewer people than New York.

I would assume schools put their rankings in their Media Guides and tell their rankings to possible recruits.

I DVRed Florida State at Notre Dame tomorrow at 7:30 P.M. Coverage is scheduled to end at 11:00 P.M., but I expect it to end later. I can't extend the recording by 30 minutes or more because my mom DVRs Saturday Night Live, which starts at 11:29 P.M. rather than 11:30 P.M. (if the game is over). I had to set a manual recording.
