    I took another look at Big Hurt's numbers, circa 1990-1997: 178 wRC+, 179, 175, 170, 205, 168, 168, 179. So dominant. It would be crazy good if that's the path for Judge.

Frank Thomas was an All-State tight end and was good enough to get a scholarship from Auburn. Pat Dye said he's the second-best athlete, only behind Bo Jackson, he ever coached.

The comp was strictly based on offense. Hence, the usage of wRC+.

I chose Thomas because, like Judge, he was a massive human being. Still is. Maybe not quite as tall, but the Big Hurt also had a big strike zone to contend with. Thomas is a first-ballot HoFer. Judge has a ways to go. But so far so good.

This. He was not a great 1B but suggesting he was not very athletic is simply false.

    The evolution of Aaron Judge?

    From #Statcast's @AndrewSimonMLB: Judge enters today with MLB-best .571 BA / .857 SLG against curves+sliders.

Judge hit just .211 / slugged just .427 vs. breaking balls in 2017.

Anyone notice how wall shy he’s been this season? I understand with the surgically repaired shoulder and all, but his hesitation is noticeably evident, especially with how many walls he ran into last year

Yeah, maybe a little. Which isn't the worst thing.

Abreu was, by far, the worst. It was as if the RF wall had violated his mother the way he kept his distance. (I know he sustained an injury from a wall early n his pro career but still)

Also, this is glorious, written after he actually made contact with the wall at YS:

    http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/200...-wall.html?m=1

We’ve seen the ice caps shrink in size,
As bedrock markets slide and fall,
We’ve forded raging streams of lies,
But Bobby Abreu, hitting a wall?

    Aaron Judge's first 22 games in 2017: .303/.411/.750 with 10 HR, 20 RBIs.

    Aaron Judge's first 22 games in 2018: .341/.476/.659 with 7 HR, 16 RBIs.

It's frightening to think he's getting better.

He is. Swings and misses have dropped. He's crushing sliders. A complete superstar.

I also think it's part of his overall growth as a ballplayer. He's simply getting smarter with more experience.

He doesn't need to be Slade Heathcott out there. He can play hard without being reckless and running into walls frequently. He knows he's important to the lineup. It's part of his maturation. I can see him being more aggressive during the postseason, but in April, play smart.

I agree 100%. I do not want to see Judge running into walls in the regular season. He's far too valuable.

just in the last calendar year, Yankee OFers and walls:

    Ellsbury, concussion
    Frazier, concussion
    Fowler, kneecap rupture
    McKinney, shoulder injury
    Judge, shoulder injury

I really like this post. I was wondering how he was stacking up against last year - thanks!

Don't feel like you ever have to worry about AJ. Confident he will always come out of mini slumps or come up with a big hit/play when needed even in the midst of said slump.

I think he's shown an ability to make adjustments, even dating back to his minor league career. I'm pretty satisfied happy with how Judge turned out.

No doubt. Hearing about how he wasn't "ready" a couple years back was funny.
