Austin said "hold my beer" and then hit two homers.

Man, it sure would be nice to have Greg Bird as the regular 1st baseman for the rest of the season. I'm tired of "envisioning" how good Bird can be - I want to see it firsthand for a few months!!!

Hit him between Judge and Stanton and drop Didi to 6th after Sanchez. Lol @ the 7-8-9 spots going to Hicks-Andujar-Torres. What a lineup!

Am I the only one who's not thrilled by this? Based on his career so far, Bird will be back on the DL before you know it. He seems to be one of those injury prone guys who just can't stay on the field. Hope I'm wrong, but....

I don't understand why you're not thrill he's back? Injury prone or not, having him back is a good thing isn't it?

I'm hoping to get that Judge-esque moonshot at the stadium that Bird and his swing are totally made for. Loft, backspin, exit velo, tall, leftanded, etc. I want that 450+ moonshot pulled to RF where nobody even moves and the announcers oscillate between laughing and silence.

Has nothing to do with his 0-4 last night, but wouldn't it have been wiser to continue playing Austin at 1B till he (inevitably?) goes into another funk? What good does it do to take any ABs away from a hot bat that you hope Bird can replicate?

Austin was 0-12 in last 3 games.

In May his line is .143/.178/.357.

And he's terrible against righties and not nearly as talented as Bird. Walker is the argument to be made if anything, which I'd still disagree with.

I stand corrected. Didn't realize he had cooled off that badly.

He already looks more comfortable than he did at any point last year. Last season, I remember him not being able to hit the fastball. Today for example, he took a 98 mph FB the other way off Giles, and earlier in the game he pulled a 95 mph fastball from Verlander foul. Good signs.

Did you leave the country during the postseason?

No did you? He was getting beat during the regular season. He was our best hitter in the ALCS but I still didn't feel like he was locked in. He was a straight pull hitter, and would swing and miss on fastballs away. He would have never taken a fastball the other way.

We had conversations here on how late he was on fastballs. Not the case so far this year.

    ALDS - .919 OPS
    ALCS - .964 OPS

He didn't just have moments, he excelled during the postseason. And without that HR against Andrew Miller, they could've been swept by the Indians.

A left-handed hitter turning around a Miller fastball at the time was extremely rare. That's more indicative of Bird's ability when HEALTHY. And it happened LAST year.
