King doesn't have to be protected this December which is why I don't agree to add him to the 40 man roster now just for a few innings in the majors.

It wouldn't have been a "few innings" in the majors if they called him up sooner. I guess it's more important they gave those innings to Lance Lynn though. Priorities and all that. Long term strategy.

I'm having a really hard believing that you wouldn't be complaining about losing a prospect off the 40-man if they brought up King.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

CP uses a 60 man roster, guys. It's really helpful in giving younger guys chances but not losing other players while doing so.

Thanks. I really don't like the Rule 5 draft and don't know the rules. This is good news because I want to see how he does next year.

    1. What prospect are we losing? We should have about 8 open spots at the end of this season. That includes guys who shouldn't be on the 40 opening the 2019 season (Cessa, Gray, ect...)

    2. You can trade pieces off the 40 man PRIOR to the rule 5.

King has already pitched in three new levels this year and is up to 168 innings, there is no need to promote him this year. He'll be in the mix next spring, but will likely start in AAA again along with Sheffield and Loaisiga behind five more experienced guys (Severino/Tanaka and we'll see who else).

Re: 2018 Yankees Minor League News & Notes

King should have been promoted earlier this season. I feel like the concept young SP needing innings in the majors is lost on many. Almost all of these guys come up and struggle. It's a very long development process. Even for star prospects like Severino. You give a guy a shot he might learn a pitch doesn't work as well. Or maybe he needs to work on another pitch. Or maybe his command needs to be sharpened. Or 2 strike approach needs to be changed. Ect..ect...

Instead of throwing garbage like Lynn, Gray, Cessa, and Cole out there, these innings down the stretch should be better used. Getting a look at a potential future rotation piece is pretty important, especially considering the state of the rotation next season.

When you remove King during his perfect game to get Cessa some innings. Something is inherently broken in the Yankees process.

KLaw chat from today. You guys will enjoy this one.

Q: Hi Keith – I saw that you recognized Mike King as a runner up for your prospect of the year but note that he is “probably not a starter in the long run.” He just turned 23, and has made significant improvements in the last year. What would you need to see from him next year to suggest that he could be a 4 or 5 starter?

KLaw: Given the delivery, I don’t see it at all. His age and those ‘improvements’ (I’m not sure what those would be) are not factors.

Q: Piggybacking on your article, are Deivi or King realistic rotation candidates next year or is the answer these guys are not really starters but they could be reliever options next year?

KLaw: Deivi is a starter but has one career AA start. Next year is probably optimistic. King is very unlikely to be a starter.

Keith Law has 1 rule of thumb when it comes to Yankees Pitchers in the Minors. They are all relief guys in the future.

    That's a blessing to King.

    I'm worried about Deivi now.

Super repeatable delivery with deception. Tons of innings. Bet Law knows nothing about the guy.

3er in 5 Innings tonight for King against AAA Durham.

Would fit in nicely if he were up with the cast of characters that the major league squad is putting out there on a nightly basis.

Yep. Nice game for Bollinger. The big lefty had a nice mix of pitches and was hitting his locations with a 91-92 MPH FB. His downward plane was giving hitters troubles all night. Ref's was squaring him up good but the other hitters weren't. Espinal was good for 1 inning but lost it in his second inning of work but Harvey came in and did what he has done all season and finished the game out...
