Re: 2018 Yankees Minor League News & Notes

Anyone have a scouting report on Luis Rijo? Is he just a soft tossing type with command in a lower level?

Little blurb I found from a while ago:

Luis Rijo – 18-years-old, RHP – The Yankees signed Rijo in 2015 and he has one year of DSL experience under his belt and is playing well in his first taste of the GCL. He has a 3.75 ERA and 49 K : 9 BB in 48 innings this season. He’s a low velocity guy, sitting in the high 80’s, low 90’s right now. He has good secondary pitches though and at his age should add some velocity as the years go on.

He's been posting some eye popping numbers for sure. I would love to know if he's had a uptick In stuff recently.

    KLaw's mid-season top 50:

    12. Justus Sheffield, LHP, New York Yankees

Sheffield wasn't at his best at the Futures Game but still fired off a few plus sliders and touched 95, giving up a homer when he left a fastball up to a right-handed hitter. His changeup -- his best offspeed pitch in high school -- has become more of a third weapon, one he'll need to recover to keep right-handed hitters honest, and he can still show you 40 command even on days when he's throwing strikes. He's very close to major league-ready, however, and has all the elements of a future No. 2 starter.

Damn, I am SO ready for Justus to pitch for the Yankees.

Also, another one of the Yankees patented teenaged arms appears to have popped up in the GCL...

Yoendrys Gomez. Really impressive righthander. 6-4, 175. Sat 92-95. 18 years old. #Yankees

Here's BA on him from the 2016 J2 writeup (he's mentioned 15th in the writeup, and that's when they were still under penalty )

Among lower dollar pitchers the Yankees added last year, 17-year-old Venezuelan righthander Yoendrys Gomez is one to watch. Signed for $50,000 on July 2, Gomez has 6-foot-4, 170-pound frame that screams projection. Hes been up to 92 mph with downhill angle and should be able to get his velocity spike once he adds weight. Hes shown pretty good control of his body for a long-levered, lanky pitcher to be a solid strike-thrower with feel to spin a breaking ball.

This is going to be the problem with a suspect control/command type pitching in YS ala Domingo German. You hope you don't have runners on base.

German's #s are similar to Sheff's in AAA last year but actually better. Similar H/9 and ERA, but he K'd about a batter more and walked a batter less.

sheffield will have a platoon disadvantage vs most hitters. he really needs that changeup to be effective with command to be any good.

    Gomez 7 IP (complete game), 3H, 2BB, 11K; 5-3 GO/FO. I'm intrigued.

    Nice!

    Sauer: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

The Ks aren't there yet, but he's really suppressing hits. He's now given up just 16 H in 36.1 IP so far this year.

I don't think so as he pitched against some of our higher rated IFA signings and the Yankees GCL team with a winning record.

I wasnt trying to make any actual point other than the mild 9 Yankee prospects had a tough day at the plate.

    KLaw chat today:

Q: Any thoughts on Yankees' Everson Pereira?
KLaw: Just young. Can you be a pre-prospect? That's what he is.

Q: Thoughts on Yankees pitching prospect Trevor Stephan? Is he a starter or reliever long-term?
KLaw: Reliever. Good one, but every scout i know who's seen him says reliever.

And I know he's now with Miami, but thought this was interestin...

Q: Thoughts on Jorge Guzman...can he stick as a #2 or #3 starter or is he destined for
    KLaw: Reliever all the way.

Asking Keith Law whether a pitching prospect is a starter or reliever may be the funniest thing in the world.

I can't think of anything the guy is worst at.

Has he ever said, early in their careers, that a Yankees pitching prospect was a starter? Seems all the decent ones he tabs right away as relief pitchers...

Rijo to Tampa is an interesting jump. Wonder if it's an audition.
