Re: MLB free agency: Yankees targeting Yu Darvish

Sound familiar to the Yankees regarding clearing salary to stay under luxury tax.

The Dodgers want to be able to fit Darvish into their payroll while remaining under their luxury tax. They would also presumably like to remain flexible for deals that they may need to make during the 2018 regular season. For Darvish to return to the Dodgers, they need to move a contract like Matt Kemp’s. If the Dodgers want to trade Kemp, they may need to include a decent prospect to incentivize the team absorbing the lofty contract.

Source: Yu Darvish is increasingly likely to sign with an @MLB team this week. #Twins are among the teams with whom he is engaged in ongoing discussions. @MLBNetwork

Darvish, who playfully hinted at interest with clever tweets only a couple weeks ago, has been thought to be getting closer to a deal in each of the preceding couple weeks, with none to be had. One team source suggested they offered $110 million over five years, and was surprised to be told “thanks, but no thanks.”

Kinda strange the top money teams aren't spending any money to avoid the luxury tax (as MLB intended) while teams that have some money and in need of talent also aren't spending any money.

As I understand it, Darvish has multiple offers on the table that he has not signed one of yet. It takes two parties to a contract.
Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view

6 126...probably less than he thought 6 months ago but still a nice contract.

I still think they will add another SP at some point this season but I’m fine with passing on Darvish at that price.

Winning the title can't be the measure. His personal performance has to play a larger role than the teams.
6 years, at that price, you'd want at least 4 good years. I'd bet against them getting that.

If he goes 2007 Beckett on them. Then fair enough.

If they don't then what, they are stuck with a pitcher that could be declining rapidly.

That's what teams have to offer for top tier pitchers like Darvish in FA market.

Yes, he also gets a no trade clause and opt out options in his early contract years. There are also escalators that can take the contract from 126m to 150m. That's a very good contract for him in such a cold market.
