    Ideally. I mean I guess he could be an upgrade over Toe. Decent BB% over the last few years. However, Toe and Espinoza both shouldn't be taking ABs away from Wade.

    I could see the 2B Depth Chart as:
    Gley (potentially starting in AAA)
    Toe
    Espinoza
    Wade
    Thairo

    If he even makes the 25 man roster which I have doubts about.

    Couple of gems:

    @_dadler

    Danny Espinosa's 41 wRC+ last year was 3rd-worst of the 318 MLB hitters with at least 250 PA. His 36.9% strikeout rate was the 4th-highest. So... he has nowhere to go but up!
    @zabate

    In 2017, only four players had 200+ plate appearances and a 50 OPS+ or worse. Two are with the White Sox and now two are with the Yankees. Austin Romine (252 PA, 49 OPS+) Danny Espinosa (295 PA, 43 OPS+) Adam Engel (336 PA, 39 OPS+) Tyler Saladino (281 PA, 33 OPS+)

    Eh, I actually see this as the opposite. He seems like injury insurance but also lessens the likelihood they bring in another veteran IF'er who would actually be an improvement and take away ABs from the younger guys.

    I'd be very surprised if he sees playing time barring a spring training injury or two.

    Espinoza had such a juicy 20/20 2B/SS fantasy eligibility when he first came up with the Nats. Looks destined for greatness. Fell off a cliff and fast. Hasn't been useful in years and is already 30.

    I'd be shocked if he isn't an early cut.

    Seems like a complete waste. Why not bring in someone else?

    Who says they won't bring someone else in? Also, it's only a complete waste if he makes the 25 man roster and has to be cut later on.

    I mean, he was arguably the worst player in baseball last year. I understand he probably won't make the team, but there has to be better options out there to compete for some spring training AB's right?

    I trust my GM in this process so I'm going to see what happens over the next couple of months.

    Meh, if there is one aspect of Cashmanís decision-making that warrants some criticism, it is this exact scenario. Itís not like there isnít precedent for giving too long of a leash to scrap heap guys. With that said, itís hard to imagine Espinosa taking at-bats away from Torres and Andujar.

    I see the Espinosa signing as a positive. Why would the Yankees sign him if they still planned to sign a qualified veteran? It could indicate the Yankees are ready to go into ST with the kids. If some of the kids go north, they will need Espinosa in Scranton.

    The rhetoric and habit of labeling baseball players of any sort as "trash" is beyond me

    That said, Espinosa is still good defensively and was a 2-war player two of the last three years. Like others have stated, he won't take ABs away from prospects with higher ceilings, but he's ok as a part-time player and can be an asset against lefties if things go well.

    That might be true with major league contracts, but this is a minor league contract. Furthermore, Cashman knows he has thoroughbreds in Torres and Andujar and is probably hoping they're the final answer to 2nd and 3rd base. Also, with a new manager, perhaps, the leash for veteran signings is a lot shorter.

    If they don't sign a veteran to a MLB contract then you're right.

    I still like Toe, even though he still adds little in terms of offense he can probably even pitch if we asked him too. Just an instinctive ball player in every way. Welcome to the Scranton Shuttle, Mr. Espinoza.

    OK with me. Bring in a whole troop of guys on a Minor league deal. Hardly costs anything, and maybe you luck into a 1996 Mariano Duncan somehow.

    I see that Marc Carig is leaving Newsday to cover the Yankees again for The Athletic. Cool, I always enjoyed Marc's reporting on the Yankees for the Star-Ledger before moving on to cover the Mets at Newsday.

    "Trash heap" is a pretty common expression to describe the collective group of players who have been released from other organizations. It's different than saying a specific player is "trash".

    The Yankees hired former Marlins exec Marc DelPiano to their pro scouting department. DelPiano was among those let go after Jeter took over the Marlins last year. He served as the teamís VP of Player Development and has also worked for the Red Sox.
