Action film is a genre in which the protagonist or protagonists end up in a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases. Action films tend to feature a resourceful hero struggling against incredible odds, which include life-threatening situations, a villain, or a pursuit which generally concludes in victory for the hero (though a small number of films in this genre have ended in victory for the villain instead).

Re: The JDPNYY Top 5 WD -- Question 4

    1 - The Seven Samurai - 1956
2 - Raiders of the Lost Arc
    3 - Star Wars IV - A New Hope
    4 - The Terminator
    5 - Doctor Strange*
6 - The Princess Bride (more of an honorable mention as I don't really see this as an action movie per se but Rotten Tomatoes says it falls in this cat somehow so I thought it should be included)

*I had a hard time figuring out which Superhero movie to put in the top 5 but went with this one as I've always had kind of a soft spot for Dr. Strange.

Thanks. I went with the original Star Wars over any of its successors, because it established the characters and settings, without which the later movies couldn't have existed. Same with Dr No over other Bond movies, The Bourne Identity over the later Bourne movies.

I made an exception for The Dark Knight. It was simply head and shoulders above other superhero movies.

The Cliffs of Insanity. Screaming eels. Sword fight, rock fight, going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line. Fire swamp, lightning sand, battling an ROUS. Torture. Storming the castle. Another sword fight (in which the good guy has to overcome an 11-10 disadvantage). How much action do you need?

It's more of a comedy fairy tale with action. I'm not sure where the genres cross. Great movie though.

Re: The JDPNYY Top 5 WD -- Question 4

So many movies come to mind. These are a list of my favorites. But I have so many that could be 4 or 5. Ugh.

    1 - Empire Strikes Back
    2 - The Dark Knight
    3 - The Matrix
    4 - Demolition Man
    5 - The Expendables

Does Planet Of The Apes qualify or is it strictly scifi? If that's the case it would be #1 and bump off The Expendables.

I thought about Bullitt. For five minutes, itís the best action movie ever, and I donít think itís a close call.

It really is. But I probably also could have made a list of action movies featuring Steve McQueen and been somewhat satisfied with it as my top five.

Re: The JDPNYY Top 5 WD -- Question 4

Now we're talkin'. For the purposes of Action movie, I'm using my best judgment and going by the Wiki definition, as John suggested. I am also not including movies that I feel are clearly defined as westerns or war movies, even if they have action elements, since those might be other lists. This also isn't necessary a list of best overall movies--on a best overall list some of these might be above ones that are above them on this list, since I'm emphasizing action. I've included years for ones where there are multiple films by that title or that might not otherwise be obvious.

    1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    2. Die Hard
    3. Predator
    4. Total Recall (original)
    5. Jurassic Park

    6-10: (No order among these)
    Ghostbusters
    Big Trouble in Little China
    Star Wars Episode V
    Terminator (1984)
    Commando

    11-20: (No order among these)

    The Dark Knight
    North by Northwest
In the Line of Fire (1993)
    King Kong (1933)
    The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
    The Raid: Redemption
    High Sierra (1941)
    The Bourne Ultimatum
    V for Vendetta
    Demolition Man

I would have included Alien, but ultimately decided it wasn't enough of an action movie.

The Adventure of Robin Hood (1938)
    Gunga Din (1939)
    The Magnificent Seven (1960) (I know, it's a rip-off)
    The Professionals (1966)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

    Honorable mention to:
    Predator (1987)
    Aliens (1986)

I considered The Magnificent Seven as well. Then I decided that it would not have made the list if you took away the theme music. It would be on my McQueen focused action movie list though for sure.

    Who cares? It's great.

(But it won't finish in the top 5. We always lose.)
