Blue Jays and Donaldson avoid arbitration and settle at 23 mil, an arbitration record.

Not exactly an arbitration record if they avoid arbitration.

It's not crazy, but I think I'd drop the Indians a bit, they lost Santana, Shaw and Bruce. They're still insanely good, but I am not sure I'd rank them as number 1..

    I'd go

    Astros
    Dodgers
    Yankees
    Indians
    Nats
    Cubs
    Sox
I used to think I was crazy... Now I am sure of it..

It is a record though, for an arb eligible player, and it's a data point for future arbitration hearings. Obviously they were worried he'd make even more in arb.

    Re: 2017-2018 Hot Stove Thread

Josh Donaldson will be an interesting player next offseason. He'll likely have another outstanding year... but will already be 32 years old. He'll still land AT LEAST a 5 year deal I think.

Machado at 300-400 next offseason on a 10 year deal?

    or

Donaldson at age 32 getting, say, a 6-7 year deal for 180-210?

That's a lot of extra cheddar! Machado has some knee issues, but if healthy could remain at 3rd for the majority - if not all - of the contract. How long can Donaldson remain at 3rd? I'm really not too clear on his defensive game.

Hopefully Andujar can prove himself at 3rd enough, but the juries out until we see it...

Haha, fine, its a very slightly different type of record. It's a technicality though, as it will affect arbitration in the future just like a literal arbitration record would.

Indians number 1? They lost a few pieces and didn't really improve smh

I'd say clearly the Astros should be number 1. From there, the next 3 should be Dodgers, Yankees and Nats in any order. Although the Nats have been good on paper for awhile now but always choke. Not sure if/when they'll get over the hump

Fully agreed. How do you lose Santana, Bruce, Shaw and Smith, while the only notable addition is Yonder freakin' Alonso(he's not even a notable addition, but whatever) and come out as the #1 team? At minimum, Houston has to be above them. I was under the impression that they upgraded and not downgraded, unlike Cleveland.

Betances actually settled with the Yanks for $5.1. At least there won't be drama there, though I suspect he settled largely because of how publicly embarrassing his unwinding(s) were.

He also easily beat the MLBTR projection of $4.4m.

Given what FA middle relievers have signed for this off season $5.1M seems a bargain for Betanances

Not that FA salaries are comparable to arbitration salaries. Just using it is a bench mark. Meaning if the Yanks were to deal him his $5.1M salary would not be out of line and is less than folks would pay on the open market.
