Pitchers have TJS all the time it happens.

They still have him as a hitter next year. Gleyber Torres had TJS in July IIRC and was good to go by spring. As a pitcher they lose him for 2019 but they should have him as pitcher 2020 - 2024. I think quite a few teams would sign up for that.

These new developments were so predictable, Iíve been calling this for months. He shouldíve had the surgery in June.

Next year isn't going to be easy because he not only has to rehab his throwing arm, but you're asking him to DH throughout a MLB season. Torres had TJS on his non-throwing arm.

Tanaka's arm hasn't fallen off yet. And June still would have pegged him 2020 for pitching.

I think CP posted some good info on TJS recovery for non-pitchers back in around the minors or the Gleyber thread earlier this year when I was discussing it in spring.

That leads me to believe he'll be fine to DH next year and ready for spring 2020 as a pitcher.

Man did the Angels screw this all up. Having him pitch again this year was malfeasance

You still are missing my point. He's trying to rehab his throwing arm while DHing which is quite different and more difficult than what Gleyber had to go through. Furthermore, we don't know when is surgery taken place or whether he even agrees to have it.

I get your point. Swinging a bat and throwing a ball are two different things. He doesn't need to throw a ball while DHing so there is no real issue there.

If he's not going to pitch in 2019 anyway, he might try to wait until the offseason for surgery if he wants to go after ROY.

As Iíve said since the beginning, it was a dumb idea to let him do it in the first place. Thereís a reason no one's done it before, and itís not that no one was capable.

Even Ruth only played both ways for two years, mando that was a transition.

Was it though? He clearly has shown that he can be great from both spots. TJS could have easily happened if he had just pitched.

ROY is officially over, especially if he gets the surgery now.

I'm not sure, especially if he intends to hit for the remaining of the season. 50 innings pitched is basically a middle reliever workload and by rate stats he's by far the best hitter among the rookies. His case is so unique that I have no idea how the voters think about it.

Well, now I think the experiment has to go away. After the surgery, are you going to give up his bat for a year while yo rehab him as a pitcher?

I think making him a two-way player doubles the risk of injury, and you lose two players in the process. If one of the regresses, you canít just send that one down. Heís done both as a rookie, but major leaguers figure players out, and both jobs are extremely difficult. I think they should have picked one job and told him to do it. Now, as with Cal Ripken, theyíre stuck with an initial decision that has a lot of ways to work badly.

I do, and it's not as rational as your analysis.

    This is a James Dean/Marylin Monroe/Tupac/whomever situation.

Is it even worth it? The Angels are all but out of it. If he waits until October to have the surgery that would push his return past opening day 2020. Have the surgery now and be ready to hit next August and pitch in Spring Training 2020.

This is how I read the situation too. Too fast to live, too young to die.

Assuming the surgery goes well, three months after he can begin taking BP. So..October to January. Spring Training isn't until the end of February. He'll be fine to DH next season as he rehabs his arm.
