Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

I don't know if ruthianblast follows American Hockey League action, but a Toronto team won a cup.

The Toronto Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, won the AHL Calder Cup after crushing the Dallas Stars' AHL squad, the Texas Stars in Game 7, 6-1 inside Ricoh Coliseum.

Andreas Johansson led the way with three points including two goals and Garrett Sparks had 29 saves for the win.

Johansson capped off his Calder Cup playoffs with 24 points including 10 goals as the Marlies won their first ever Calder Cup.

Now the Islanders can finally interview Sheldon Keefe.

Yeah dude! Johnsson is amazing. I'll take a hockey championship any way I can get it at this point.

    Keefe is a Dubas guy.

    DJ Smith is more likely.

Johnsson was a 7th round pick and if he is so amazing he wouldn't still be in the minors? Lets call it what it is. The Calder Cup is a title of the best group of players who can't crack an NHL roster.

Ok fine, he was a good goal scorer for the Marlies. He's a small forward and for his draft position and draft stock is amazing. Not everyone is AMatts/Nylander/Kaspenen; and he obviously isn't. Nor is he the next Theo Fleury, I just hope he gets a shot next year. I think he can be a good role player in the NHL, likely sniper on the PP.

Trotz has left he Caps. His contract was up, and although the Cup win gave him a 2 year option, it only brought a $300K increase in salary, which would have kept him on the low end of coaches, so that's all she wrote.

BB55's Three Studs and Three Duds - 2018 NHL Stanley Cup and 2018 AHL Calder Cup Playoffs

For my final post for the 2018 National Hockey League Stanley Cup and 2018 American Hockey League Calder Cup Playoffs, here are my three studs and three duds for both postseasons.

    Three Studs
    1. Washington Capitals
Why? Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals exorcised a hat-trick of playoff demons to win their first ever Stanley Cup.

    2. Vegas Golden Knights
Why? Sure, the Vegas Golden Knights didn't win the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season, but what a first season that was for them.

Will they build from that run which will lead them to Stanley Cup titles down the road remains to be seen.

    3. Toronto Marlies
Why? Toronto is starving for any pro hockey team title they can get. The Toronto Maple Leafs AHL farm team, the Toronto Marlies, won their first ever AHL Calder Cup.

    Three Studs
    1. The 32nd NHL team
Why? Whether it's Seattle or whoever, that 32nd team has a tough act to follow Vegas in year one of their NHL existence.

    2. St. Louis Blues
Why? With the Caps winning their first ever Stanley Cup, the St. Louis Blues have the longest drought for their first ever Stanley Cup title.

    3. Joe Thornton
Why? With Ovechkin getting the monkey off his back, Joe Thornton is arguably the greatest skater that has yet to win the whole ball of wax.

I'm not so sure if Joey T wants to do it in San Jose.

Well, it was another enjoyable hockey season and I'm happy to talk about it with all of you.

Isles are the only team with a coaching vacancy right? Doesn't leave much leverage, either Barry sits out the year earning nothing, or takes what the Isles offer and now why would they overpay him?

More inducement to get Tavares to stay.

I guess you could look at it as Washington having a vacancy now, too. It seems like a damaged relationship, but I think it prevents any lowball offer from the Islanders.

I believe Washington already knows who their next coach will be. It was actually in the wind before the playoffs.

Trotz give the Islanders instant credibility and I think a fair offer, even if they bid against themselves, will be worth it and needed.
