Both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning win their Game 4s to take 3-1 series leads.

Sidney Crosby and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions pitched a 5-0 shutout over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 4.

Crosby and Phil Kessel each led the Penguins with a goal and assist each and Matt Murray stopped all 26 Flyer shots to record his second shutout of the series. Crosby has five goals in the series.

The Penguins can close it out on Friday inside PPG Paints Arena.

Meanwhile, the Bolts split a pair of road games after beating the New Jersey Devils 3-1 in Game 4 to head home up 3-1.

Nikita Kucherov had two goals to take his postseason tally to four, but it was J.T. Miller who stole the show with three points on a goal and two assists.

Cory Schneider had 34 saves in a losing effort for the Devils.

The San Jose Sharks complete their revenge playoff series win against the Anaheim Ducks.

Peter DeBoer and Team Teal complete their payback for the Ducks' 2009 upset with a four-game sweep after edging the Ducks in Game 4 from SAP Center, 2-1.

Marcus Sorensen got the Sharks' crowd in the Shark Tank in a frenzy scoring the opening goal at 5:43 of the first period.

After a scoreless second period, the Ducks tied the game at 1-1 when Andrew Cogliano struck at 7:53 of the third period.

However, Tomas Hertl gave the Sharks the lead right back at 9:09 with a tip-in off a Marc-Edouard Vlasic shot.

Martin Jones did the rest with 30 saves.

The Sharks will take on the top seed in the Pacific Division bracket, the Vegas Golden Knights, who also completed a sweep on a SoCal NHL team in the Los Angeles Kings.

The Nashville Predators held off a furious Colorado Avalanche third-period comeback to take a 3-1 series lead back to the Music City after a 3-2 win in Game 4 inside Denver's Pepsi Center.

Filip Forsberg led the Preds barrage with a goal and assist as Nashville once led 3-0. Colton Sissons and Craig Smith scored in the second period.

Things got worse for the Avs as Jonathan Bernier left the game before the second period was over with a lower body injury.

The Preds also lost Ryan Johansen to injury as well.
    http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2018/04/19/...out-of-game-4/

But the Avs refused to give up.

Gabriel Landeskog got Colorado on the board on the power play at 5:20 in the third power play and Alexander Kerfoot pulled the Avs to within one, 3-2, at 11:01.

Pekka Rinne held down the fort with 31 saves and even thanked the heavy metal as the Avs' attempt at a 3-3 game had a shot rang off the post.

Nashville can close out their series inside Bridgestone Arena on Friday.

The Boston Bruins put the Toronto Maple Leafs on the brink of elimination after grabbing a 3-1 win in Game 4 inside the Air Canada Centre.

David Pastrnak had two assists on three of the Bruins goals scored by Torey Krug 28 seconds into the game, Brad Marchand at 16:55 of the second period and Jake DeBrusk at 4:17 of the third period.

Tomas Plekanec did help the Maple Leafs tie the game at 1-1 at 7:43 of the first period.

However, Tuukka Rusk kept the Maple Leafs at bay with 31 saves.

Meanwhile, it's a best-of-three between the Washington Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets as the Caps win Game 4, 3-1, to regain home ice.

Evgeny Kuznetsov led the way with a goal and three assists and Braden Holtby helped the Caps with two wins after stopping 23 shots.

Holtby's opposite number Sergei Bobrovsky had 29 saves for Columbus.

The Philadelphia Flyers live to fight another day.

The Flyers force a Game 6 on Sunday at Wells Fargo Center after doubling up the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2.

Claude Giroux scored his first goal of the series at 17:29 of the first period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The Penguins scored the next two goals of the game to take a 2-1 lead late in the second period.

Bryan Rust tied the game at 1-1 at 12:00 and Jake Guentzel put Pittsburgh in front at 16:45.

But Valtteri Filppula tied the game at 2-2 after two periods with a shorthanded tally at 18:15.

Sean Couturier gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead at 18:45 of the third period and Matt Read sealed the win with an empty netter with 18 seconds left.

Michal Neuvirth was another hero for Philly with 30 saves.

The Winnipeg Jets fans are celebrating at Portage and Main and at the Forks tonight.

The second incarnation won their first ever playoff series and the first playoff series win in any incarnation since 1987 after a 5-0 vaporizing on the Minnesota Wild in Game 5 from Bell MTS Place.

The first incarnation beat the Calgary Flames, 4-2 back in 1987.

The Jets did most of their damage in the first period scoring four times and chasing Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk out of his crease almost 12 minutes into the game.

Dubnyk allowed four goals on 10 shots.

Mark Scheifele scored his fourth goal of the series and had an assist.

Connor Hellebuyck closed out the series with his second straight shutout after stopping all 30 Minnesota shots.

The Colorado Avalanche just simply won't go away.

Down to their third goaltender with the injuries to Semyon Varlamov and Jonathan Bernier, Jared Bednar and the Avs force a Game 6 back to Denver's Pepsi Center on Sunday after stunning the Bridgestone Arena crowd with a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators in Game 5.

After a scoreless first two periods, Nashville drew first blood in the third period.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins center Nick Bonino scored his first goal of the playoffs at 10:18.

First, the goal was waved off by referee Kevin Pollock when they thought Bonino kicked the puck into the net, but Pollock decided to talk with the Situation Room in Toronto about a distinct kicking motion.

The officiating crew decided it was a good goal and the Preds took the lead, 1-0.

But the Avs refused to quit.

Nathan MacKinnon had tremendous patience and made Pekka Rinne look silly as he fed his captain Gabriel Landeskog for his fourth goal of the series on a tap-in at 15:49 to tie the game at 1-1.

The Avs took the lead with 1:28 to go in regulation as Sven Andrighetto pounced on a rebound off a 2-on-1 after a turnover by P.K. Subban at the Colorado zone.

But the big story is 'the Hamburgular' Andrew Hammond who was stellar in place of the two Avs' injured goaltenders. Hammond had 44 saves in the win and the first Stanley Cup playoff victory in his career.

The Leafs sub-par defense is going to be what gets them dumped out of the playoffs by Bruins. It affects so much more than just giving up scoring chances. They are so often out of position that they recover and end up taking a penalty. Frederick has been good, but when you're constantly having to stand on his head it eventually is going to hurt.

And it puts more pressure on the likes of Auston Matthews and Patrick Marleau to score more often.

This is nothing new in Toronto whether it's Frederik Andersen, Curtis Joseph or Felix Potvin in net. The Maple Leafs don't have one or two quality stay at home defensemen to help out their goalies by winning battles in front of their own net or even have a quality defensive structure.

They live to fight another day and it's still arguably a team on the rise, but they need to fix their defense.

The Tampa Bay Lightning book a spot in the Eastern Conference semifinals after eliminating the New Jersey Devils in five games in a 3-1 victory.

Nikita Kucherov scored his fifth goal of the series in the win that featured a goaltending duel between New Jersey's Cory Schneider and Bolts netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Schneider had 35 saves in a losing effort while Vasilevskiy had 26 as the Bolts punched their ticket to Round 2 and await the winner of the Boston Bruins-Toronto Maple Leafs series.

Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals are one win away from advancing to Round 2 as the home team finally wins in their series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Barry Trotz, Alex Ovechkin and the Caps needed overtime to outlast Columbus 4-3 in Game 5.

However, it was John Tortorella's Blue Jackets that struck first when Matt Calvert scored his second of the series shorthanded at 10:08 of the first period.

Nicklas Backstrom replied for Washington at 13:22 with his first goal of the series as the first period ends with both teams having a goal a piece.

The Caps grabbed their first lead of Game 5 when Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his fourth of the series at 3:21 of the second period as Washington was in front 2-1.

The Blue Jackets made it 2-2 at 4:45 when Calvert scored his second of the game.

But the Caps answered at 16:42 on the power play from T.J. Oshie as the Caps led 3-2 after two periods.

However, the Jackets forced overtime when Oliver Bjorkstrand made it 3-3 at 2:30 of the third period.

Columbus outshot Washington 42-29 for the game, but Braden Holtby continued his hot form with 39 saves including 15 stops in the third.

That set up Backstrom who scored his second of the game and the game-winner at 11:53 of the first overtime period.

Washington can close out their series on the road on Monday inside Nationwide Arena.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

It was a goalscoring feast inside Wells Fargo Center for Game 6 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Unfortunately for Philly, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions continue their three-peat quest with a 8-5 victory.

It was the Flyers who drew first blood though as Sean Couturier scored his third of the series at 2;15 to give his team a 1-0 lead.

But the Penguins struck twice in a 47-second span as Sidney Crosby scored his sixth of the series at 6:30 and Carl Hagelin made it 2-1 Pittsburgh at 7:17.

Andrew MacDonald answered for the Flyers at 15:48 to end the first period in a 2-2 slugfest.

Couturier scored his second of the game and fourth of the series 40 seconds into the second period and had an assist on Scott Laughton's tally at 12:14 as the Flyers led 4-2.

But the Penguins scored two of their own to make it a 4-4 game after two periods.

Jake Guentzel and Patric Hornqvist each had a goal and assist to close out the second frame.

In the third period, Guentzel went crazy as he scored a natural hat trick to give Pittsburgh a 7-4 lead with little over seven minutes to go.

Couturier completed his hat trick at 17:07 to give Philly a lifeline at 7-5.

Both Guentzel and Couturier had five points in the game.

Bryan Rust sealed the series with an empty netter at 19:29 as Mike Sullivan's crew await the winner of the Washington Capitals-Columbus Blue Jackets series.

Meanwhile, both Western Conference Semifinal matchups are set.

The Nashville Predators book their place in Round 2 after eliminating the pesky Colorado Avalanche in six games after a 5-0 whitewash inside Denver's Pepsi Center.

Nick Bonino led the way for the Preds with a goal and two assists while Pekka Rinne had a 22-save shutout.

Avs goalie Andrew Hammond had 32 saves in a losing effort as Colorado's season comes to an end.

The Preds will take on the Winnipeg Jets in Round 2 while the other Western Conference Semifinal will pit the Vegas Golden Knights against the San Jose Sharks.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

It's like 2013 all over again for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins.

Just like in Round 1 five years ago, the Leafs were down 3-1.

Like five years ago, the Leafs won both Games 5 and 6 over the Bs to force a Game 7 in TD Garden.

Motivated by the tragedy that saw 10 people killed by a ramming van on Yonge St. near Finch Avenue, the Leafs beat the Bruins 3-1 inside Air Canada Centre.

After a scoreless first period, Jake DeBrusk gave Boston a 1-0 lead at 1:02 of the second period.

However, the Leafs tied the game at 1-1 when William Nylander answered 35 seconds later.

Toronto grabbed a 2-1 lead after two periods when Mitch Marner found the back of the net at 13:25.

Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen was stellar in net with 32 saves.

Tomas Plekanec forced a winner-take-all Game 7 in Boston on Wednesday with his sealer at 18:46 of the third period.

The winner will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Round 2.

Meanwhile, one Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup is set.

For the third straight postseason, the fourth overall in the Sidney Crosby-Alexander Ovechkin era and the 11th overall, the Washington Capitals meet the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ovechkin led the way with two goals and Braden Holtby completed his four for four return as Barry Trotz's number one goalie with 35 saves.

Nick Foligno had two goals in a losing effort for the Blue Jackets as their season comes to an end.
