Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

WE WILL HAVE A NEW STANLEY CUP CHAMPION!

The Washington Capitals have done it!

Alex Ovechkin finally reaches the Final Four of the Stanley Cup playoffs and finally getting a playoff series win over his archrival Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Evgeny Kuznetsov is the hero inside PPG Paints Arena with his overtime winner at 5:27 of the first overtime period as the Caps deny the Pens their three-peat chance with a 2-1 victory in Game 6.

After a scoreless first period, it was the Caps who drew first blood in the second period.

Alex Chiasson scored the first goal of the game at 2:13 of the second period to give Washington a 1-0 lead.

Pittsburgh replied though through Kris Letang who wired a slap shot past Braden Holtby at 11:52 to tie the game at 1-1.

There was no scoring in the third period as the game headed into overtime.

It's either going to one Pittsburgh goal that forces a Game 7 back in D.C. or one Washington goal that sends the Caps to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1998.

It was the Caps turn to shine.

Kuznetsov forced a turnover at their own blue line and Oveckhin picked up the puck and feathered a pass to his fellow Russian teammate in stride who poked a backhand past Matt Murray and send the Capitals to the third round of the playoffs where they have some old scores to settle with their former Southeast Division rival Tampa Bay Lightning.

Murray had 28 saves in a losing effort as the Penguins, like they did in 1993 against the New York Islanders, denied a chance for a three-peat in overtime in an elimination game.

Islander fans can rejoice that they still remain as the last team to win at least three consecutive Stanley Cups.

D.C. sports can finally celebrate since one of their teams exorcised one demon: making a Final Four in the Big Four Pro Sports Leagues.

D.C. teams still have to exorcise two more demons though: making a grand final (last was 1998 with the Washington Capitals) and winning a league championship title (last was 1991 with the Washington Redskins).

There will be a Game 7 in the Music City on Thursday!

P.K. Subban guaranteed that the Nashville Predators will win Game 6 against the Winnipeg Jets and he was right.

The Preds vaporized the Jets 4-0 inside Bell MTS Place to force a winner-take-all Game 7 back to Bridgestone Arena.

Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg each scored twice and Pekka Rinne bounced back from his second pull of the playoffs in Game 5 with a 34-save shutout.

Regardless who wins, the Vegas Golden Knights will start the Western Conference Finals on the road.

There's a pretty good chance for Ovi and company.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have their number in 2003 and 2011.

They probably didn't want two game 7s on the same night but none of the other series ended up going 7.

Actually it's Justin Timberlake's fault. Concerts are booked way further out than playoff games. I remember a few years ago they had to wait 5 games to start the Stanley Cup after the previous series had been decided because of the Ice Capades.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

BB55's Primer - Western Conference Semifinals Game 7: Winnipeg Jets @ Nashville Predators

The two best teams in the regular season, in terms of points, will square off in Game 7 for a spot in the Western Conference Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The loser goes home while the winner advances to the NHL's Frozen Four.

Both the Winnipeg Jets and Nashville Predators have Stanley Cup aspirations, but one of them will continue their journey.

The Preds are in their third Game 7 in their history, but the first inside Bridgestone Arena after splitting the first two on the road.

As for the Jets, the second incarnation are in the first Game 7 where the first incarnation is 0-5 combined with the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes.

My key players for the Nashville Predators: the blueline and Pekka Rinne
Why? P.K. Subban, Roman Josi and the Nashville blueline not only have to produce points, but also help out their #1 goalie in Rinne who has a .906 save percentage in this series.

My key players for the Winnipeg Jets: the blueline and Patrik Laine
Why? Dustin Byfuglien and the Jets blueline are in a similar situation with the Preds defensemen which is producing in both ends of the ice.

As for Laine, he has only one goal in this series and Paul Maurice is looking for the young Fin to have a great Game 7 to ease the burden off the likes of Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler, who each have nine points in the series.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

The Winnipeg Jets made more history.

Paul Maurice, Mark Scheifele, Paul Statsny and the Jets advance to Western Conference for the first time in their history as they blew out the Presidents' Trophy winners, the Nashville Predators 5-1 in Game 7 to win the hard-fought series four games to three.

It was the Jets' third win inside Bridgestone Arena in this series.

The Jets scored the first two goals of the game that chased Pekka Rinne out of the net with 10:47 left to play in the first period.

Tyler Myers scored the opener at 8:41 and Stastny knocked Rinne out of the game at 10:47 as Rinne gave up soft goals on seven shots.

The Preds got on the board before the first period as P.K. Subban wired a one-timer past Connor Hellebuyck on the power play at 15:54 to cut Winnipeg's lead to 2-1 after the first period.

However, it was all Winnipeg from there.

Mark Scheifele scored his 10th of the playoffs at 17:50 of the second period to give the Jets a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Stastny scored his second of the game at 11:59 of the third period to give Winnipeg a 4-1 lead and Scheifele put the cherry on top with an empty netter at 17:27 for his 11th goal of the postseason.

Hellebuyck had 36 saves as the Jets will host the Vegas Golden Knights in Round 3 starting Saturday inside Bell MTS Place.

BB55's Three Studs and Three Duds - 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Conference Semifinals

    Three Studs
    1. The Washington Capitals
Why? Alex Ovechkin and the Caps finally broke their Pittsburgh Penguins hoodoo after ousting the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions in six inside PPG Paints Arena.

Will they also exorcise two more demons to win their first ever Stanley Cup?

    2. The Vegas Golden Knights
Why? The first year Vegas Golden Knights are in the Western Conference Finals in their inaugural season.

They have passed every test with flying colors so far.

You can take that expansion label off their backs.

They will get a bigger test though in the Winnipeg Jets.

    3. The Winnipeg Jets
Why? Canada's last Stanley Cup hope for 2018 is in the Final Four.

Paul Maurice, Mark Scheifele and the Jets are on a high as they made the third round of the playoffs for the first time in any incarnation.

The former first incarnation Winnipeg Jets turned Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes took 17 years to reach the third round and won one game before being eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings.

The second incarnation took seven years.

But Canada's last hope will take on a quicker, speedy foe in the Vegas Golden Knights.

    Three Duds
    1. San Jose Sharks
Why? Despite missing the Stanley Cup playoffs only six times in their history, the San Jose Sharks failed to book more Stanley Cup Finals appearances other than 2016.

    2018 is another failed run.

Even a healthy Joe Thornton wouldn't help the Sharks since Vegas beat them with speed and Marc-Andre Fleury stoned them.

There will be changes again for Doug Wilson and Team Teal including a chance to snatch John Tavares. However, Wilson and the Sharks' brass probably need to get rid of Joey T, Paul Martin and Joel Ward to sign Tavares and re-sign Evander Kane.

But they need more speed on that team.

    2. Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne
Why? Rinne was a megabeast in the Nashville Predators' 2017 run to the Stanley Cup Finals and is up in line for the Vezina trophy in 2018. However, his form was very inconsistent especially a woeful home mark.

In 2017, Rinne was 9-2 inside Bridgestone Arena. In 2018, he was 3-4 and was pulled three times at home.

Preds fans hope that Rinne has a better 2019 to make amends for 2018.

    3. Another failed three-peat for two-time defending Stanley Cup champions
Why? Just like in 1993 against the New York Islanders, the Pittsburgh Penguins' chance for a three-peat went up in smoke in overtime and at home in 2018. This time, it was the Washington Capitals who dethroned Sidney Crosby and company.

Since Al Arbour and the New York Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cups between 1980 and 1983, there hasn't been a team winning a hat trick of Stanley Cups.

With the NHL expanding to 31 and down the road, 32 teams and with the NHL salary cap structure, it will be a challenge for any team to win have a three-peat.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

BB55's Picks - 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Conference Finals aka Round Three

Eastern Conference Finals: A1. Tampa Bay Lightning vs. M1. Washington Capitals

    Keys for TBL:
    - Strength in depth in all areas
    - Best the Caps in special teams
    - Keep believing in Andrei Vasilevskiy
    - Continue to have the Caps number in the playoffs

    Keys for WSH:
    - Alex Ovechkin, Braden Holtby and Evgeni Kuznetsov staying hot
    - Jakub Vrana and the unsung heroes step up to ease the burden off Ovechkin and Kuznetsov
    - Stay out of trouble Tom Wilson
    - Exorcise another demon

Prediction: The Washington Capitals are on a high after defeating their long time for Pittsburgh Penguins after many numerous defeats.

Passing another test in the Tampa Bay Lightning to make their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since their dream run will be a bigger challenge.

Barry Trotz is also concerned about the health of Nicklas Backstrom and Andre Burakovsky and even though the Caps survived the first two rounds without them, they need those two to counter a healthy and deep Bolts squad.

Special teams will also be a factor since those two teams have lethal power plays and solid penalty kills.

In the end, this series will go the distance and the Bolts get my nod, but only just.

BB55's Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning over Washington Capitals in seven.

Western Conference Finals: M2. Winnipeg Jets vs. P1. Vegas Golden Knights

    Keys for WPG:
    - Strength in depth led by Mark Scheifele, Paul Stastny and Patrik Laine
    - Connor Hellebuyck outplaying Marc-Andre Fleury
    - Special teams
    - Hold serve at home and win two on the road

    Keys for VGK:
    - Stay balanced led by William Karlsson, Jonathan Marchessault, James Neal, etc.
    - Marc-Andre Fleury continuing his Conn Smythe form
    - Gerard Gallant continues pushing the right buttons
    - Keep enjoying the ride while still playing with house money

Prediction: I had a full-blown migraine on who to pick to represent the Western Conference in the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals.

Both teams are similar where they're deep, skilled, quick and speedy, can bang and thrive under pressure.

Both teams have great stories this year.

Vegas are proving their critics and doubters wrong up to this point and they're still playing with house money in year one of their NHL existence.

As for the Jets, they're also hungry for a Stanley Cup Final and Canada's last hope to reach the final since the Vancouver Canucks in 2011 and bringing home the Stanley Cup North of the Border since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.

Like the Eastern Conference Final, the Western Conference Finals between the Jets and the Golden Knights will go the distance and both Bell MTS Place and T-Mobile Arena will be loud with more drama.

In the end and in a coin flip, I'm going with the underdog in the Golden Knights in a hard fought seven-game war.

BB55's Pick: Vegas Golden Knights over the Winnipeg Jets in seven.

    Hangover? What hangover?

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals picked up where they left off after dethroning the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 2 with a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Michal Kempny helped the Caps draw first blood at 7:28 of the first period snapping a wrist shot past Andrei Vasilevskiy.

The Bolts thought they made it 1-1 before the end of the first period when Nikita Kucherov scored on a breakaway, but Jon Cooper's men were called for Too Many Men on the Ice.

Ovechkin made them pay with his trademark one-timer on the power play off the face-off at 19:54 to give Washington a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.

The floodgates opened when Jay Beagle struck at 2:40 of the second period to make it 3-0 and Lars Eller peppered in Washington's second power play goal of the game at 6:42 to make it 4-0.

Cooper pulled Vasilevskiy after two periods as he gave up four goals on 25 shots.

Tampa Bay won the third period as they outscored Washington 2-0.

Steven Stamkos got the Bolts on the board on the power play at 3:45 and Ondrej Palat scored his fifth of the playoffs at 13:03.

However, Braden Holtby stopped 19 of 21 shots to help the Caps steal home ice.

Game 2 on Sunday from Amalie Arena.
