As much as Islander fans want a change at GM I wouldn't see Ron Francis as an upgrade. Chuck Fletcher on the other hand. Lou would make a great Team President.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

Meanwhile in the American Hockey League, the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs reaches the second round after a few stunning upsets in Round 1.

The Central Division bracket did a lot of damage.

The Chicago Blackhawks AHL affiliate and fourth seed, the Rockford Ice Hogs, swept the top seed and Vegas Golden Knights AHL minor league team, the Chicago Wolves, in three straight games.

The Icehogs will take on the third seed and Winnipeg Jets AHL minor league squad Manitoba Moose as they dethroned the defending AHL Calder Cup champions and Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins in five games including a 5-1 rout inside Van Andel Arena in a winner-take-all Game 5.

In the Pacific Division bracket, the best regular season team in the Western Conference and Arizona Coyotes' AHL franchise, the Tucson Roadrunners, upended the San Jose Sharks main minor league team, the San Jose Barracuda in four games and will take on the second seeded and Dallas Stars' AHL team, the Texas Stars as they sent the Los Angeles Kings' AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign packing in four.

As for the East, the Toronto Maple Leafs won't extend their Stanley Cup playoff trip, but their main farm team and Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy winners Toronto Marlies will as they advanced to Round 2 despite nearly blowing a 2-0 best-of-five series lead against the Vancouver Canucks' AHL squad, the Utica Comets, and needed a 4-0 whitewash in Game 5 to book their spot in the North Division Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, who powered their way past the Buffalo Sabres' AHL team, the Rochester Americans in a three-game sweep.

Finally in the Atlantic Division bracket, the Philadelphia Flyers' AHL team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms will take on the Carolina Hurricanes' AHL team, the Charlotte Checkers.

The Phantoms defeated the Boston Bruins' top minor league team, the Providence Bruins, in four while the Checkers swept the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL franchise, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in three games.

Round 2 AHL Calder Cup Playoff matchups - Best-of-seven

    Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division Final: A1. Lehigh Valley Phantoms (PHI) vs. A3. Charlotte Checkers (CAR)
North Division Final: N1. Toronto Marlies (TOR) vs. N2. Syracuse Crunch (TBL)

    Western Conference
Central Division Final: C3. Manitoba Moose (WPG) vs. C4. Rockford Icehogs (CHI)

I bet once Tom Wilson cheap shots Sidney Crosby, a Penguin will go after Alex Ovechkin.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

If the Washington Capitals held onto their lead in Game 1, they would've put the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins into all sorts of trouble up 3-0.

Instead, Alex Ovechkin and the Caps are up 2-1 after a clutch third period that led them to win Game 3, 4-3 inside PPG Paints Arena.

After a scoreless first period, John Carlson continues his red hot playoff form scoring his second goal of the postseason on the power play 48 seconds into the second period.

The Penguins replied with the next two goals of the game.

Jake Guentzel scored his eighth of the playoffs at 4:33 to tie the game at 1-1 and Patric Hornqvist gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead with his power play tally at 6:49.

In the same period, Tom Wilson had another questionable high hit on a Penguin.

It was nasty as Zach Aston-Reese suffered a broken jaw and concussion with a little over 10 minutes to go in the second frame.
    http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/news...g17471z1hlmjom

No penalty was called on the hit.

Chandler Stephenson tied the game at 2-2 at 11:04 before the Pens grabbed the lead again at 16:27 when Sidney Crosby scored his eighth of the playoffs as Pittsburgh had a 3-2 lead after two.

But the Capitals outscored the Penguins 2-0 in the third to steal the win.

Wilson had one of the assists on Matt Niskanen's first goal of the playoffs at 5:06 and Ovechkin scored his eighth of the postseason with 1:07 left to propel Washington to victory.

Expect a lot of blood in Game 4 on Thursday.

Re: 2017-18 NHL Hockey Season Thread

Meanwhile inside Bell MTS Place, the Winnipeg Jets are still undefeated at home ice in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Paul Maurice and the Jets are 4-0 in the Whiteout as they rallied for a 7-4 victory in Game 3 over the Nashville Predators.

It started very badly for the Jets as Nashville had a 3-0 lead after the first stanza.

Mike Fisher helped the Preds draw first blood at 4:53.

P.K. Subban scored his second on the power play at 10:06 to make it 2-0 before Austin Watson scored his fifth at 17:35 as the Preds quieted the Whiteout.

However, the Jets crippled the Preds in the second period with a 4-0 barrage to take a 4-3 lead after two periods.

Paul Stastny had three points in the period with a goal and two assists. Dustin Byfuglien had two goals and Jacob Trouba had a goal and assist.

Trouba also completed his Gordie Howe hat trick with a fighting major early in the third period.

The Preds made it a 4-4 game at 7:40 when Filip Forsberg scored his fifth on the power play.

But the Jets scored three goals to pull away for the win.

Blake Wheeler scored a go-ahead strike on the power play at 15:01 and scored his second on a empty netter at 19:09.

Brandon Tanev put the cherry on top 20 seconds later to make it 7-4 Winnipeg.

Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne had 38 saves in a losing effort as the Preds trail 2-1 with Game 4 inside Bell MTS Place on Thursday.

It's sad that since fighting isn't tolerated during the playoffs a retaliatory cheapshot is the only way the Pens feel that they can get even. The Pens have rid themselves of any tough guy who can drop the gloves it seems so Wilson gets away with targeting players heads. Islanders fans know all to well about his behavior from the 2015 playoffs.

It's even sadder when the NHL took away the instigator rule when it comes to fighting.

The Tampa Bay Lightning strike fast early and take a 2-1 lead and home ice advantage after a 4-1 rout in Game 3 over the Boston Bruins inside TD Garden.

Ondrej Palat gave the Bolts a 2-0 blitz with two goals inside the first 3:19 of the game.

Patrice Bergeron got the Bruins on the power play at 14:12.

But the Bolts responded quickly when youngster Anthony Cirelli scored his first goal of the playoffs at 16:43 to give Tampa Bay a 3-1 lead.

The second period was scoreless, but there was a fight when David Backes duked it out with Cedric Paquette after Paquette went after Backes after his hit on Dan Girardi.

Steven Stamkos sealed the win with an empty netter power play tally at 19:18 of the third period which also saw Brad Marchand getting a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

Tuukka Rask had 33 saves in a losing effort for Boston while Andrei Vasilevskiy had 28 saves for the Lightning.

It's now a Best-of-Three between the San Jose Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights.

Team Teal heads back to Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena with the series tied 2-2 after a 4-0 whitewash in Game 4 inside SAP Center at San Jose.

Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon had two assists in the first period as Marcus Sorensen scored his fourth of the playoffs after some nifty moves before finding the back of the net at 15:37.

Joonas Donskoi scored his second of the playoffs with six seconds to beat Marc-Andre Fleury and give San Jose a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.

The second period saw Tomas Hertl win the battle in front of the net to poke a backhand in at 5:35 as the Sharks led 3-0 after two.

Joe Pavelski put the cherry on top with his power play goal at 11:43 of the third period.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones gets his second shutout of the playoffs with 34 saves.

The Sharks won the special teams battle again going 1/5 on the power play and killing all five Golden Knights power plays.

He is approaching Matt Cooke territory now that his reckless play is knock players out of the playoffs. Still it is astonishing that no one challenges him to a fight. Last night David Backes, not known for fighting, had no problems dropping the gloves after a legal hard hit on Dan Girardi. The Pacifist Pens look like cowards.

I still want the Caps to win.

Kudos to the NHL for making a suspension decision within 24 hours and making him serve it during the playoffs. It is PATHETIC how MLB allowed Guriel to serve his suspension during the following regular season instead of during the World Series. And it is PATHETIC that it takes MLB over 2 weeks to decide on an appealed suspension.

Another series is tied 2-2 after four games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins even their series against the Washington Capitals in a Desmond after a 3-1 victory in Game 4 inside PPG Paints Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Jake Guentzel continues his hot scoring form in the playoffs scoring his ninth at 9:21 of the second period to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.

The Capitals replied though on the power play as T.J. Oshie wires a one-timer from the slot at 12:55 to tie the game at 1-1.

Pittsburgh takes the lead again before the second period ended on the power play.

Evgeni Malkin whacked the puck in crossing the goal line at 17:31 to make it 2-1.
    https://www.nhl.com/news/washington-...?tid=277729160

The Capitals challenged for goalie interference, but the call stands.

The Capitals caught a break in Game 2 when Patric Hornqvist's goal was called a no goal even though one replay showed it crossed the goal line completely.
    https://www.nhl.com/news/pittsburgh-...?tid=277729160

The Capitals tried to tie the game at 2 late in the third period, but Guentzel sealed it with a power play empty netter at 19:02 to put Game 4 out of reach.

Oshie and Kris Letang also had a scrap after the goal as well.

The Nashville Predators made sure that three of the four Conference Semifinal series are a Best-of-Three.

The Preds regain home ice after a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 4 inside Bell MTS Place.

Ryan Hartman gave the Preds a 1-0 lead with his goal at 17:20 of the first period.

PK Subban doubled the lead at 14:36 on the power play as the Preds led 2-0 after two periods.

Patrik Laine got one back for the Jets at 19:09 of the third period on the power play, but Pekka Rinne held down the fort with 32 saves.

Scott Hartnell was inserted into the lineup by Peter Laviolette and led the team with four hits.
