changeup makes the fastball play better. he might be able to throw less hard and with better command.

Whatever work he did with Pedro Martinez during the winter is certainly paying off.

disagree, he needs the change. he's gotta at least show a change of pace to keep them from sitting fastball.

Sevy leads the majors in xFIP (1.69).

I missed the 3 run inning last night, but he looked NASTYYYYY otherwise.

He may actually be correct that he didn't NEED the change last night; his stuff was filthy. But he's not always going to be that sharp with the FB and slider, so the change is still useful on nights where the slider doesn't break or whatever.

I think he started off 8 of the first 9 guys with a fastball and usually followed that up with another fastball. He can't keep doing that or people will sit on it. He did throw some sliders for strikes (looking), but IIRC he also got some generous calls there.

that homer he gave up was on a slider. it shows why he can't go on two pitches even when those pitches are 'on.'

a bad slider is easier to hit for power than a misplaced 98 mph fastball. showing a good change means you don't have to throw the slider as much. it's a pitch that can get the outs but also hurts you a lot when it's flat.

Meh. You can hang anything. Him throwing a changeup doesn't mean he wouldn't have hung a slider or hung a change.

the point was more about having a mix of pitches, and mixing speeds, can help lower reliance with the slider. when a pitcher is tired in the fingers, hanging pitches happen more often.

hanging changeups tend to get hit very hard too, harder than sliders even. but when you put in a few changes in the mix, you don't have to throw as many sliders so it gets less tiring on the fingers. precondition is of course having a decent change.

Talking about the first homer. That was a fastball. I would have been sitting on it first and second pitch if I were a Sox hitter.

Agree with you generally though. You can get away with a hanger more often if the batter is expecting something else entirely. Adding another pitch into the mix creates more doubt and keeps the batter off balance.

Plus, it's not like his changeup is garbage. I think he has shown ability with it, would be stupid to scrap it. For the games when the slider and FB look like they did last night, sure. But like I mentioned above, that won't be the case all the time unless we just saw a magical transformation.

law is a good evaluator. his stance on sevy is shared by many: if he doesn’t develop a third pitch and command his stuff, he’ll be a reliever.

    nothing overly “bītch” worthy IMO.

didn't deserve to give up four runs. korma's error made a huge difference.

there are gonna be plenty of starts where his FB & SL are no where close to the way they were two night ago. he’s gonna need a CU and he needs to throw it 15 times (and more per night) at least IMO.

yes, especially against lefty hitters. there are times on the second and third go thru the line-up that you can see good hitters watch him fastball on the bat or off the plate. a CU is needed to prevent that.

Didn't know Archer threw his slider that much. Isn't that...not good?

I do worry about Severino's longterm health because of stature, FB velocity, and slider usage.

The thing that is funny is that Severino has gotten further than 95% of prospect starting pitchers who DO use their legs more. F Keith Law.

yea but that's because severino is elite in other areas. the idea is that it would only be better for him if he could leg drive more
