YES had a shot of him sitting in the dugout during today's game and they also reported that he should be fine for tomorrow.

everyone has known monty had an innings limit this year. they sent him down to help control that. this is not exactly difficult to understand.

they hit him hard. a lot of luck in that start. think it was 7 pitches put in play over 98mph but none became hits. give him props for not blowing up but a lot of it was pure luck.

According to ESPN, he has the 33rd best WAR in MLB for a starter. How do you take him out of the rotation if he's a good 2 starter by WAR (using 31st through 60th as 2 starters)?

In his last nine starts, he is 1-2 with a 4.87 ERA. This is his second streak of three consecutive no decisions.

Why cherry pick his last nine starts?

If you want to play that card, during his last three starts, he has a 2.98 ERA.

In the 31 years from 1987 through 2017, the Yankees have had two pitchers debut at age 24 or younger and pitch at least 130 innings in their rookie year, which was to be their debut year. They are Pettitte and Montgomery. The Yankees also had rookies at older ages like Tanaka and Orlando Hernandez. Nova pitched 165 1/3 innings in his rookie year but pitched 42 innings the year before.

Sort of an up and down start. Rough at the beginning and then wound up doing better than Garcia probably would.

    Another terrible start today.

At this point he's no better than Garcia.

It makes all the complaining on here about him being taken out of the rotation a few weeks ago look dumb.

Not going to go far with that control. Needs to get better next season.

This organization has gone out of its way to mess him up due to misuse since they acquired Garcia.

Let the kid pitch every 5th game without him worrying about these ridiculous pitch counts they now have him under. It's clearly affected how he's attacking hitters.

I dont agree with this. He's had control issues all year. Being sent down and on a pitch count isn't affecting his results.

This is true, but the chaotic nature of his starts doesn't help and only makes it worse.

Which is what we have seen, a slightly worse version of Montgomery for the past month.

Another very good start from Montgomery today. It seems like he has been somewhat overlooked due to Judge running away with the ROY and Severino emerging as a true ace.

But Montgomery has had the best rookie year of any starter in pinstripes since Andy Pettitte in 1995 (excluding El Duque and Tanaka) with an fWAR of 2.3. That would be the highest of any rookie pitcher in the AL and would put him square in the running for 2nd place in the ROY.

^ heís at 2.7 fWAR after tonightís start. I completely agree with you - guy went completely under the radar. If he makes some improvements going forward, we will be set up even nicer than we all thought we were.

Iím wondering who gets more ROY votes - Monty or Chad Green.

Really nice season. Needs to make a few adjustments. I think the foundation is there.

Just needs to work on control and get better at being ahead of batters. His numbers ahead are just so much better.

I've felt vaguely good about the year he's had and vaguely optimistic about his future. Thanks for providing these numbers, which paint an even better picture than I had realized.

Interesting. Just for the purposes of discussion, another one I'd throw into the hopper would be Chien-Ming Wang's 2005. Abbreviated (17 starts) because a) not called up until end of April and b) 2-month injury from early July-early September. But stats were rookie-good and he pitched under a different (and IMO tougher) environment than Montgomery did this year. Yankees had the option of failure this year, if they had -- "It's just a rebuilding year." No such option in 2005, they were coming off the franchise's greatest humiliation and on a mission to get back to the WS.

And they stumbled badly at the start, and it was the last year in which GMSIII was sort-of involved. They were scrambling to make up ground immediately after that 11-19 start. Every game Wang pitched that year, and admittedly there weren't enough, were pitched under the old world of Yankee expectations. The very idea of rebuilding was anathemic. Plus he pitched a great game in defeat in the ALDS.

    Baseball-reference says Green isn't a rookie.
If Montgomery's ERA doesn't go up, he will be the second Yankees rookie since 1978 with at least 150 innings and an ERA under 4.00. The last Yankee rookie to do that was Nova in 2011, and before him Guidry in 1977. Baseball-reference has him tied for 58th in WAR for pitchers with 2.6. The Yankees have six of the top sixty in MLB with Severino, Gray, Robertson, Green, Sabathia, and Montgomery. That includes WAR for Gray and Robertson before they came to the Yankees.

He got lucky that Hicks hauled that fly in.
